I'm starting this thread early as I'm off to Athens tomorrow, and will be leaving at sparrows fart. (It's mainly for work, although I have a day off on Thursday)

I think we're now a band of mainly hardcore low carbers, although we continue to attract new followers - welcome to you all!

Hopefully, the longer termers will be finding it much easier to follow this WOE and food choices are more automatic. Although I have noticed lots of references to cheesecake and crumble which just will not do if you're wanting the pounds to shift

Let me know how you're all doing - and any tips to share for those for whom the weight loss has slowed down.

Ilovemyteddy - Grin - totally agree re that article and well done re your loss you are doing fab x

HumphreyCobbler · 12/06/2012 17:57

hello - I was going to ask about coffee. I should stop, shouldn't I? I will but not yet, need to get over the sugar/carb withdrawal first.

Had another good day today, really feel like I am back in the zone. Did another run, went out for lunch for DH birthday and had meat and salad, refused delicious birthday cake.

I listened to my Paul Mckenna cd, I am sure it has helped to kick start the process.

MNP · 12/06/2012 19:13

A small loss so am :)

Jins · 12/06/2012 19:33

I hoped you'd be talking about the swedish study here as I've been battling it out on a thread in AIBU and inevitably the article has been linked

The results in a nutshell were linked i50.tinypic.com/qxj777.jpg

Anyone else see a striking rise in alcohol consumption which didn't seem to make it into the reports?

(I'm a long time low carber in maintenance btw)

smokinaces · 12/06/2012 20:08

Has anyone else seen this link?

Guardian, Why our Food is Making us Fat

smokinaces · 12/06/2012 20:12

sorry, realised that links through FB

Normal Guardian Link here

SharonGless · 12/06/2012 20:20

Jin and smokinaces, thanks so mich for those links. I have emailed them to Dh. I should be working now so haven't got time for big chat about this but the media are putting their usual spin of the Swedish study. Jin have been following the thread - don't blame ou for bowing out tbh

Jins · 12/06/2012 20:24

There's only so much you can do isn't there?

smokinaces · 12/06/2012 20:34

BBC 2 Thursday at 9pm - 3 part series called "The Men that made us Fat" - apparently which shows the whole carbs and sugar good, fat bad flawed research etc. Looks very interesting......

SharonGless · 12/06/2012 20:35

Yes although I have been guilty in RL of dismissing Atkins as a fad without doing any research about it. Now I have had my eyes opened, especially around the food industry/government conspiracy I feel evangelical about it

Jins · 12/06/2012 20:36

:) I remember those days.

It just makes perfect sense doesn't it?

HumphreyCobbler · 12/06/2012 20:46

In Defence of Food was the book that opened my eyes to the essential fallacy that is the lipid hypothesis.

www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductView-10317-10001-202349-Unearthed+platter+cheese+%26+speck

I had this for lunch today. Absolutely lovely and 0 carbs. Had it with a watercress and spinach salad.

Off to catch up now...

BettySuarez · 12/06/2012 21:11

Thank you everyone Smile

Please may I officially join you? I have made a start this evening with a lovely salad and huge piece of tuna steak and some feta cheese. Very tasty and very filling!

I am expecting the first few days to be quite tough which is worrying me a little as I have a long drive to do on thursday plus some work meetings and I really hope that I am not strugglling too much with headaches or the shakes. Any tips to get through this initial process ot is it just a question of slogging it out?

I have started reading the Atkins book which I find quite helpful and have also printed off the list off allowed foods for the first two 'attack' weeks. I am amazed at the choice of foods on there as I usually cook from scratch anyway I should find it fairly easy to prepare some pretty decent meals (provising I can stay away from crisps and biscuits)

I know that this isn't strictly speaking an 'Atkins' thread but I am hoping to follow the plan and come on here for extra support.

Does anyone eat Halloumi cheese? I thought that this might make a nice addition to mushrooms for breakfast. Just under a third of a pack comes in at 1 g of carbs?

Have also bought the Collins Carb Counter booklet but am a bit confused between carbs and net carbs - not sure which one to be looking at.

I need to loose at least 4 stone so it's the long haul for me!

teaandthorazine · 12/06/2012 21:29

Hello betty - drink plenty of water and have some low-carb snacks to hand, but in a couple of days you'll find you don't need to snack, probably...

Marks & Sparks are stocking pork scratchings Shock. I bought two bags Grin.

Also bought some fab spice grinders - garlic and parsley, chili and garlic, lemon and pink peppercorn - brilliant for using on salads, fish, meat, whatever.

B - choc mint protein shake, coconut oil
L - prawn and avocado salad (cucumber, lettuce, four slices of tomato)
D - calamari and steamed kale, liberally dusted with chili and garlic salt - yum!

I did have an americano with a splosh of semi-skimmed today as the cafe at work had run out of cream. But it was the barest splosh, almost a black coffee!

NigellasGuest · 12/06/2012 21:36

I have had a big FAIL - DD2 made some flapjacks and I have had about 5.
Really really bad. Sad

sybilfaulty · 13/06/2012 06:24

Loving the food on here! What other people have been eating sounds very delicious!

Nigella, bad luck on your flapjack, sounds very tasty but I can imagine how cross you feel with yourself. I don't know how to remedy a slip up, but someone else will. How many weeks in are you? I read in Neris and India that slipping up matters less after the beginning but don't know how far in that is. Today will be better Smile.

Right, off to take my vitamins, then get the kids ready for school.

MrsHerculePoirot · 13/06/2012 06:54

I managed day two OK as well - feeling really positive about it all. Betty I'm also here for the long haul!

SharonGless · 13/06/2012 09:54

Welcome to our new Lc friends! I absolutely love this Woe and feel do much better on it. Drink
Loads of water and be prepared to feel a little bit rough for a few days but the benefits outweigh this. I think the key to this is to plan ahead so that you know what you are eating and try not to be caught out. Little packets of nuts good for low carb snacks

Lots of good recipes on the thread and links to blogs with fab recipes too

Also these threads have really kept me going and the support on them is anazing

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 13/06/2012 10:07

May i join in please? Smile

I have just started Atkins and was kindly pointed in this direction, i am going to scan the thread for lovely food ideas.

I hate most Atkins food but i know it works very well for me and i can have good results very quickly so i have to suck it up and get on with it.

SpringGoddess · 13/06/2012 10:31

Oh joy - scales shave been kind this morning and I have lost 1.4kg overnight - just 0.7kg to go till I'm back to target. Have been surprised by how easy it is to get back on the wagon after a bit of an intentional break from it whilst on holiday. It has given me wads of willpower I have previously not encountered.

NigellasGuest · 13/06/2012 11:24

No flapjacks today - No flapjacks today - that is my Wednesday morning mantra. sybil I'm past bootcamp but still relatively new to this WOE. I did the shred this morning (I know that doesn't make up for it) Blush

NigellasGuest · 13/06/2012 11:34

smokinaces I am definitely going to watch that programme.
The article alone is very interesting.

Perhaps everyone on the whole weight loss Topic on MN, not just this thread, should watch it too! The next time someone doing a low-fat diet says low carbing is wrong, we can cut and paste from the article smokinaces has linked to.....

FiddleDeFat · 13/06/2012 11:35

Just caught up with the threads and have updated the spreadsheet of our weight loss, which is looking mighty fine.

I was just about to archive ohforfoxsake when I noticed you have posted that bootcamp is calling again. Could you update your weight on the ss please?

Also there are a lot of new joiners this week. Anyone care to be added to the spreadsheet? Go on, you know you want to! Just post your starting date and weight (or index of 100 if you dont want to divulge your weight) over on the weigh-in thread and I'll do the rest. Then it's just a case of updating your weight every Monday.

BettySuarez · 13/06/2012 11:54

Well even though I had an Atkins meal for dinner for last night I am offically counting today as day 1.

B. Portobello mushroom, 2 slices of bacon and few bits halloumi (way too salty and managed only half!)
L. Salad with boiled egg and feta (yummy!)
D. Salmon and salad (this is the plan anyway)

My main concern is breakfast because I really struggle to eat in the morning and can't cope with food smells but if I feel hungry then am worried I might be tempted to launch myself at the bread bin.

So really keen to hear what others have for breakfast.

Will drop on by the weigh in thread and also hello and welcome to everyone else, particularly those who are starting out with me Grin
