I'm starting this thread early as I'm off to Athens tomorrow, and will be leaving at sparrows fart. (It's mainly for work, although I have a day off on Thursday)

I think we're now a band of mainly hardcore low carbers, although we continue to attract new followers - welcome to you all!

Hopefully, the longer termers will be finding it much easier to follow this WOE and food choices are more automatic. Although I have noticed lots of references to cheesecake and crumble which just will not do if you're wanting the pounds to shift

Let me know how you're all doing - and any tips to share for those for whom the weight loss has slowed down.

That was a very poor article which just talked about "cholesterol". While cholesterol is a real thing, what people actually mean when they refer to blood cholesterol are lipoproteins of which there are a few different types. High density lipoprotein is protective against many diseases and this is the "cholesterol" which is raised on a low carb, high fat diet. There are a few different types of low density lipoprotein and the one that is the most damaging to our health has been linked to eating a high carb diet.

SharonGless · 11/06/2012 20:14

QueenStromba, thank you. I knew someone would be along to explain the science part. The article isn't at all balanced and didn't give me enough information abut this scientific study which appears to be as a result of questionnaires sent out

BIWItheBold · 11/06/2012 21:59

Cholesterol is an important part of our healing process and our bodies need it.

Zoe Harcombe draws an important analogy when she talks about cholesterol. She likens it to the police being present at an accident. We don't look at the scene of an accident and blame it on the police, who are always present when there is one!

Hello, thanks for the welcomes.

I have done OKish today - some cheese, squid with chilli and pepper, goats cheese and beetroot salad, pepperami. I know too much processed things in there, but a big change all the same. I have drunk more water than usual and been to a body balance class at the gym.

DH away this week so I am not quite as organised as I should be, but I will get there!

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/06/2012 22:25

Ps I am starting at 16 st 11. Blush. Just 7 stone to lose then...

SharonGless · 11/06/2012 22:26

Well BIWI we do get blamed for most things. This article has even made to the Times of India!

Ps how hot is it Athens just to make us all jealous

teaandthorazine · 11/06/2012 22:31

The study's authors themselves accept that their work shows no causal link between increased fat intake and increased cholesterol levels, anyway. Add this to the fact that we know there is no good evidence linking high cholesterol to heart disease, and to the studies that show higher levels of cholesterol may actually be protective against early death... well, it all looks like a load of old media-frenzy pants really, doesn't it?

In fact, my favourite bit of the whole ridiculous thing is this:

'The researchers said the most striking diet changes were sharp declines in consumption of boiled potato and crackers like wholegrain crisp bread. The changes were balanced by increasing intake of rice and pasta and wholegrain soft bread.'

Ummm, anyone want to point me in the direction of the 'low-carb' WOE that actually increases one's consumption of rice, pasta and bread? Hmm

studyingstudying · 11/06/2012 22:39

Hi everyone, Last week (week 2) I lost 1lb. Not much, but I have been struggling with sugar cravings all week! How do any of you more long-term low carbers cope?? Any helpful hints?

I have just made some yummy burgers so I will be having those for lunch or dinner for the next couple of days.

Hope you're all doing better than me!

sybilfaulty · 11/06/2012 22:44

Thank you for your welcomes everyone.

Today has been good, but I think I might have eaten a bit much. Only had a big salad with my chicken tonight in the way of carbs. Eaten an avocado and loads of Jarlsberg as fat. Been very delicious and not like a diet, except I realise how much I pick at food in addition to mine. Biscuit at work, snack with the kids after school, plate of pesto pasta which DD2 didn't want. All of this would normally be forming a lump in my tummy. I have felt a bit heady and a bit cold, but that could be because it's freezing here. I have my heating on in June. Shocker.

Looking forward to another good day tomorrow.

mummyduff · 12/06/2012 07:58

Good Morning all, wohoo the rain has stoppedGrin

SpringGoddess · 12/06/2012 09:15

Bloody hell I finally plucked up the courage to weigh in this morning after a week of normal eating - I gained 5lb - surely a large part of that must be water and glycogen stores, I didn't over consume by 5lb of fat!! Did I?!!! Anyhow back to low carbing no point in dwelling over gained weight! Smile

BettySuarez · 12/06/2012 09:37

Hello everyone, would love to join you but have no idea where to start. Is there a book that you all follow? Or a list of allowed foods or carb limits etc?

Feeling a bit lost so a pointer in the right direction would be fab Grin

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 12/06/2012 09:51

studying studying I've found my sugar cravings are not as bad as I thought they would be.
I try and make sure my dinners are delicious so that i get a 'mmm that was lovely' feeling. I do sometimes struggle after dinner, thinking I could go something sweet but I usually drink a big bottle of water, load the dishwasher and clean up, and by the time i do all that my cravings for sugar have subsided.

Or some cheese, not sweet I know but tends to satisfy.

NigellasGuest · 12/06/2012 10:05

studyingstudying I am finding so far that the combination of this WOE and taking supplements of evening primrose, B6, magnesium is helping. Also chromium is supposed to help with cravings - I'm planning to get some of that too!

BIWItheBold · 12/06/2012 11:22

Betty - if you look for the very first Bootcamp thread, you will find a list of all the rules/allowed veg. I think they were also repeated at the start of the Week 8 thread.

It is 32 degrees here today - and forecast for tomorrow is the same and then 35 on Thursday!

i am NOT looking at your post biwi because i am working from home and have on three jumpers, walking socks and a blanket over my knees. in June. i don't know how long it will be before i succumb to putting the heating on

i have resigned myself to no sun ever again EVER

someone bought me godiva chocolates as a thank you yesterday. i gave them to dp

sybilfaulty · 12/06/2012 13:53

Day 2 and I am feeling good, if a little headachey.

There's plenty to eat and it's so delicious that I dont feel deprived. I did a big shop with DS ths am and realised that most of my trolley is plain meat, fish and vegs, with a few bits of fruit and some biscuits thrown in for the kids. DH has the same as me plus potatoes and a bit of beer. Felt very virtuous and can start to see the healthy side.

I did sin though and buy a carton of lactofree milk for my coffee. I am trying to only have a couple of cups a day but I can't drink it black. Will that cause a huge problem, do you think?

Thanks for all the support so far Smile.

NigellasGuest · 12/06/2012 14:06

sybill - double cream in the coffee! works for me, and it's within the rules (unless you are bad with dairy) Smile

WillieWaggledagger · 12/06/2012 14:06

Sybilfaulty well done on your first day!

I do have two cups of decaf coffee a day with a dash of milk and it doesn't stop me losing but these things can affect different people on different ways, so perhaps worth being aware that it might need to be something you cut out. That said lacto free is i'm sure better than the full fat regular milk I drink so you'll prob be fine! Others have it with cream - could you try that?

vnmum · 12/06/2012 14:25

I know what you all mean by the bloody weather, and I am so Envy at BIWI getting all that sun. DH keeps trying to persuade me it's a good idea to try and get another posting to cyprus. I have been resisting so far but if this is the weather we will get all and every summer I might just change my mind Smile

Even though I have been doing this woe for a while, I still get the craving for something sweet after a meal. Don't know why. I either try and ignore it or have a swig of cream or a sponnful of full fat greek yog. They're not sweet but seem puddingy because they are creamy and it seems to do the trick

SpringGoddess · 12/06/2012 14:59

Has anyone tried liquorice tea - tastes very sweet but only 1 kcal per cup - bloody delicious too. I'm currently swigging a Teapigs liquorice & peppermint - clipper do a cheaper one but I couldn't get old of it locally.

Jacaqueen · 12/06/2012 15:27

I love Teapigs Liquorice and peppermint.

I recently ordered about £30 worth of Teapigs. Well my alcohol consumption has gone right down and a girl has to treat herself somehow.

Scales are up a couple of pounds from Sundays all time low of 13st 2lbs. Not going to panic as I seem to fluctuate before a loss. Not so long ago I was heading towards 15stone so 13st 2 feels good.

NigellasGuest · 12/06/2012 15:49

I have the Clipper licquorice tea - absolutely delish! (I have a very sweet tooth). I have even had it with a teaspoon of coconut oil in it, which makes for quite a greasy combo but surprisingly not at all bad (IMO).
Liquorice tea is so yummy I'm convinced it can't be good!

Ilovemyteddy · 12/06/2012 15:55

Just catching up with the thread...

SharonGless - re that cholesterol article. I had a health check about 12 weeks after I started this WOE (started weighing 16st) was about 14st-ish when I had my health check, and my cholesterol was 4.5 So I think that article was probably bollocks Grin

MrsHerculePoirot - don't worry about how much you have to lose (I started this WOE in mid-Jan at 16st - I am now 12st 12lb and aim to get down to 10st 7lb)

This WOE does work for those of us who have loads to lose. Just set yourself small targets and don't fret about how far you have to go. Follow the bootcamp rules and drink LOADS of water.

Also you should take your measurements (something I didn't do) because you often find you lose inches rather than weight. I measured my waist a few weeks ago and again a couple of weeks later, and I had lost maybe a couple of pounds weight, but two inches off my waist (the falling-down jeans were an indication of this!!)

Willie - we put the heating on last night. In June. Bloody ridiculous. Envy at BIWI

mummyduff · 12/06/2012 15:57

Envy BIWI so much.
