Welcome back BIWI and welcome aboard puffylovett.

There's a spreadsheet here where we chart our progress. I know you say weight loss is not your primary motivation, but sometimes it's nice to see the numbers march on down. Just say if you want to be added.

If so, you get the honour of sharing the week's Biggest Loser with heartstart, by losing 7lbs. Smile

Hi fiddle, yes I'd love to be added please! When's weigh in? I don't think I should have that honour though as I've only just joined (and I had a jelly snake just before bed)

MmeLindor. · 06/06/2012 01:55

Marking place.

I have been AWOL too, but am back on track. Bloody visitors at the weekened.

Made hollandaise sauce today for the very first time and it was delish.

How was Rome, BIWI? Did you hire a scooter?

FiddleDeFat · 06/06/2012 05:46

You're added to the spreadsheet now puffylovett. We were all new joiners at one point so you are definitely entitled to be included - so you are now officially joint Biggest Loser of the Week!

We weigh-in on Mondays, so you can update your weight yourself on the spreadsheet then, as well as post and boast on the new weigh-in thread for that week (which will be Week 9 by then).

Bizarrely, I too succumbed to a jelly snake last night. Just the one, and it was red, and not really that nice actually. And I'm now up 0.6lbs this morning which is an awful lot of damage for one wee blooming jelly snake!

Hello, Mme! No we didn't hire a scooter - but we had a fab time. Food choices were mostly good. On the bad side, I had:

  • about 5 or 6 tortilla chips in one bar (all the bars serve you nibbles with your drinks - often olives and peanuts, which were fine, but not always!)
  • 1 x 1 inch square piece of pizza, in another bar
  • two very small pieces (mouthfuls) of bread
  • 3 or 4 cubes of fried potato; I ordered a dish that came with potatoes, asked the waiter for the dish without potatoes, but he brought them anyway! Avoided the rest

The rest of my meals were all protein/salad - had some very lovely steak and a pork saltimbocca that was just beautiful.

On the plane home, the meal (on an evening flight) was - of course - a sandwich. So I had the Atkins bar I had tucked in my bag for that very purpose.

Oh, and several bodyweights' worth of prosecco ... Blush

I'm wearing a dress today that I bought a couple of weeks ago, which was too tight then - and I fit into it nicely now, so I'm hoping that I haven't done too much damage to myself. I'm not weighing until Friday at the very earliest, after what will hopefully be 3 strict Bootcamp days.

MmeLindor. · 06/06/2012 08:50

Oddly, I seem to have started my period today, only 2 weeks since my last one. Is this the start of the Big M?

Would explain my carb cravings over the weekend.

teaandthorazine · 06/06/2012 09:06

Hello all. I think I will be getting the prize for Most Spectacular Tumble Off The Wagon, as I went camping over the long weekend and boy, was it carbtastic! I've eaten a lot of complete crap, I will admit. Thing is, I couldn't wait to get home and start back to 'clean' eating again. Obviously I've also put on eeeeek amounts of weight, so am not weighing at all this week and will go again from next Monday.

It's also TOTM, joy. So tonnes of water and back to the veggies for me! Am a Bad Carber.

teaandthorazine · 06/06/2012 09:21

One interesting thing though that really shows how this WOE changes things; on Sunday I'd not eaten very much but everything I HAD eaten had been carby crap. By the evening I was shaky, irritable, felt awful and when I did get to eat I fell headfirst into a plate of chips. Then had cake. And beer.

Contrast that with the fact that when eating low-carb I've been happily going 12-15 hours without eating anything and feeling absolutely fine, better than usual even, and definitely no carb cravings.

It's really brought home the fact that blood glucose is the primary factor behind what we eat and why. Control that, and you control everything else about your eating!

smokinaces · 06/06/2012 09:22

Mme, I have very sporadic periods when low carbing. I have the mirena so don't really have them - until I low carb when they come anything from fortnightly to monthly.

Shimbo · 06/06/2012 11:40

Hi everyone. I have not been so successful this past week. My weight has been more or less static since week 1 loss of 4lb and I am about to enter week 4, v frustrating Sad but I have come to the conclusion that it must be down to not quite enough water and a few small cheats, which really seem to have made a huge difference. The cheats have not been huge and have included cheese, ff yoghurt, milk in hot drinks, blueberries and the occasional mouthful of cake (toddler party yest and it was the top bit of cheesecake Blush). And I am probably a bit low on fat too.

Soooo, this week I am upping the water majorly and am staying in Bootcamp to see if it will help. I just can't believe that totally cutting out wheat and other grains and a huge amount of sugar has not really affected my weight that much - how is that possible?! If I didn't feel a bit better I would be close to giving up.

As an aside, I do find myself noticing more what other people eat. On my way to work this morning I saw a little girl about 3 eating a lolly, this was before 8am!

Shimbo · 06/06/2012 11:43

Sorry me again. Can some kind person please advise on exactly how much added fat to include? For example if I am eating a tuna salad, I have a little olive oil on top, prob 2 tablespoons, is that enough? I haven't really been having a lot of butter or cream.

BIWItheBold · 06/06/2012 11:48

That sounds like a reasonable amount - but more is better than less! Eating fat makes a huge difference, and it could be why you're not losing any more. Basically, if you're dropping your carbs and keeping the fat low, then you will be eating mainly protein - and the body deals with excess protein by turning it into glucose - which means the body releases insulin, and then lays down fat.

Eating fat does not do this - there is no insulin response. So don't be frightened of it.

Use butter - cook with it, add it to your vegetables - and also full fat mayonnaise (just check the carb count on the label as they can vary quite a bit)

The dairy could well be an issue for you, especially milk. The amount of milk you can drink in hot drinks over the course of a day can mean that you're still consuming a lot of carbs.

And the cheats will also make a difference too. This is not a very forgiving WOE, and cheats will impede your weight loss.

Shimbo · 06/06/2012 11:52

Thank you BIWI for your wisdom. I will push on and include more fat. I think you're right as I do feel like I am eating a huge amount of protein to fill me up, especially oily fish (which was why I thought as mackerel etc has so much fat already I would not need to add any more). Thanks again.

vnmum · 06/06/2012 12:18

hello all, my AF arrived to day too but miraculously it appears I have managed to lose weight rather than gain for TOTM. Also I don't have as many symptoms, cramps not really happening, less irritability (still a bit snappy and less patient over past few days but nowhere near as bad), period seems lighter.

I have also had to put the heating on as I am bloody freezing. Does anyone else really feel the cold on this woe?
I don't know if it is due to me losing my natural insulation (fat) or the woe but I seem cold all the time.

Anyway, DH having an early finish at work so I am managing to get to the gym while he watches the DC then he will get to go when I get back. Teamwork! Smile

WillieWaggledagger · 06/06/2012 12:25

vnmum i am freezing too, but I think it is the weather for me rather than this woe (and my office is very draughty). i cooked supper early yesterday so that I could stand by the warm oven!

i find the high consumption of water can make me feel quite chilly though

hopefully the gym will warm you up a bit

Schnarkle · 06/06/2012 12:34

I think I've just experienced a whoooosh I've seen mentioned on other threads.

I was bemoaning the fact I've been stuck at 151/150 for an age now. This morning I weighed and I was 147 Shock

Weighed a few more times to make sure the scales weren't playing a practical trick on me and all weights were the same!

Ilovemyteddy · 06/06/2012 12:47

BIWI I didn't know that about excess protein being turned into glucose - not that I am eating excess protein, but I'm fascinated by that fact!

I had a thought the other day that we get scared of feeling hungry. I've hardly felt hungry at all on this WOE but had the munchies the other night and realised that I was anxious about feeling hungry. Is that a genetic response, do you think? I had some celery, more water, and a few nuts and it went away, but it was just the kind of feeling that would have had me reaching for the biscuit tin in the past. Lucky we are a biscuit free-zone as there is just me and DH at home and he is dieting too Grin

puffylovett · 06/06/2012 13:43

Wow schnarkle that's fab! Well done!
Another lb on this morning, well that's the price u pay I suppose for cheating. I swore I wouldn't weigh daily. But it's fascinating.

I'm interspersing my water with cups of pukka detox or cleanse teas, which helps to feel warmer and being a big sugar addict I've also started on some chromium - as I used to suffer quite badly with hypoglycaemia. It's def helping with cravings for sugar and carbs.

Off on hols on Friday but it's self catering and our friends have been warned! Think they're dreading it, 4 of us, 1 picky boy, 1 with severe allergies, 1 diabetic and me low carb!

I made mayo with olive oil and no mustard earlier and it was bleurgh

moonshine · 06/06/2012 13:52

Well done schnarkle!

Feeling cold is a well-known and documented symptom of ketosis (ketosic? ketogenic??) diets - that's why I hated following the Cambridge Diet in winter but was glad of it in summer Smile

vnmum · 06/06/2012 14:18

interesting moonshine, yes it is an advantage to not be as sweaty in the summer but DH doesn't appreciate being used as a foot warmer every night of the year Grin

PostBellumBugsy · 06/06/2012 14:28

Marking my place. Still here! Not losing much weight at the moment - but clothes still getting looser.

Was a tiny bit off piste on Saturday night - but otherwise made it through the celebrations & stuck to low carb.

Glad to hear you had a lovely weekend BIWI.

Keep drinking the water everyone.

GreenEyesAndHam · 06/06/2012 16:44

Another one here who is absolutely bloody freezing- I was ridiculously happy the other week when we had the hot weather, as it was so nice not to be cold!

Of course it doesn't help that I'm quaffing water all the time, and not drinking tea and coffee. I've actually brought a box of Oxo to work this week, so I can have a hot 'brew' Grin

GreenEyesAndHam · 06/06/2012 16:53

Not that I'm moaning- I always sound like I'm having a whinge, I'm not Grin just 'reporting' what I'm finding

Blush
jan2011 · 06/06/2012 17:15

its weird as i seem to have a warmer body temperature since adding more fat and protein! everyone reacts differently i guess. i used to be freezing all the time. then again i haven't lost much weight so maybe you guys could be colder because youve lost weight?

jan2011 · 06/06/2012 18:46

just had avacado and tuna salad
