So we have survived week one, more or less intact Grin

There has been a lot of cheating along the way - either intentional or accidental - but most people seem to be getting on with it and embracing low carbing. And we have seen some spectacular results already!

As one of the cheaters, I can tell you what you will already have discovered for yourself:

This way of eating (WOE) is an unforgiving one. If you slip up or cheat, it will show up on the scales

I know it's hard. I drank wine on both Friday and Saturday night. But it really is up to you how strict you choose to be - and therefore hopefully you will understand that it is up to you how much weight you are losing.

I realise this sounds patronising. But it's the ultimate truth of this (or any) diet.

Having said all that, I also know that there are some people who are struggling, and for whom weight loss has been very slow.

Just remember, if you have less weight to lose, then your rate of loss will be slower than those who have more to lose. And any loss, even if it's only a pound or so, is still a loss. Visualisation is always helpful for me if I think I've only lost a pound this week. Remember, a pound loss is like two packets of lard! That's a lot of fat.

And if weight loss is slow, or you're not seeing the scales move, have a long look at what you have been eating and drinking, and be really honest with yourself. Have you been following the rules? Have you been allowing carby things into your diet? Have you being drinking enough water? Try keeping a food diary so you can record everything (and I mean everything) that you're eating and drinking, as this can help you identify what might be affecting your progress.

If you still can't work out why it's happening (or not happening!), post what you've been eating and drinking here, and others might be able to help and advise you.

Anyway. Lecture over! Welcome to Week 2. Hopefully you will all see significant loss this week as well. But those of you who have lost loads in week 1 - don't expect to see the same kind of loss in this week - it's inevitable that it will slow down. Remember that sustainable, long term weight loss is around 1-2lbs per week.

And those of you who are struggling, hopefully another strict week will get things going for you! And I also hope that everyone has got through their carb withdrawals by now, and you are all feeling fantastic!

Onwards and downwards ... Grin

And you call that a problem?!

You do need to eat, but no need to eat a huge meal. Just an appropriate snack/small meal - a hard boiled egg, a salad, for example.

BIWI It is a weird sensation: going from feeling that I will die of starvation if I do not eat several a packet of crisps, to having to really think about having a meal.

I have some ready roasted chicken so will have some of that and a boiled egg with some mayonnaise.

(Thank you again for the thread)

My pleasure. It's all keeping me on the straight and narrow pretty much I can tell you!

I lapsed quite spectacularly over the weekend Blush - combination of huge row with DH and PMT.

However have restarted with renewed enthusiasm -ignoring that thanks to my own stupidity at the weekend, I now weigh the same as I did last week so undid 5 days bootcamp effort in 2 days.

Let me be a warning to you

encyclogirl · 23/04/2012 12:23

I have just had the most immense lunch.

Warm chicken salad, with shreds of griddled chorizo on top. Dollop of homemade coleslaw on the side.

Seriously does not feel like 'diet-food'

smokinaces · 23/04/2012 12:32

I resisted biwi :-) I did longinly eye up the Soya yogurt and strawberries in the fridge but resisted. I did demolish a large lunch though - snacked on the chicken i had planned for lunch, so made a Bacon, courgette and shallot eggy frittata omlette type thing. Got those banana shallots as recommended and they added a touch of sweetness.

I'm wondering whether im actually craving tea. Only had one cup today instead of my usual three and lots of water. Might stick the kettle on and see if that helps.

Hello all [waves] I just wanted to add a few things about this diet to explain some things.

Regarding the big weight losses in week one - most of you are right this is not genuine weight loss but please do not let that make you despondent! When you stop eating carbs your body uses the remaining carbs for energy first, then it moves onto your glycogen which is energy stored in the liver and weighs between 5-7lbs depending on the person. After about 3-4 days your body has used this glucogen and you enter ketosis and your body then starts using the fat stores for energy. This is why many first week losses seem huge but reality is it's the glycogen that has gone and if you were to re-introduce carbs again or fall out of ketosis your body would start storing gycogen again and you would "gain weight" you are not gaining fat though.

Secondly people seem to think that light pink on the ketostix means they are not far enough into ketosis and the stick should be dark pink/purple to be in the best state of ketosis. Again wrong you want the stick to be pale pink as this shows you are drinking enough water which in turn flushes out the ketones. There is only one state of ketosis in or out but the essential part is to flush the ketones out of the body so lots and lots of water and a pale pink stick is the best state of affairs.

Lastly I know that the IPD says not to worry about calories however do watch your portion sizes somewhat. If you are eating 3000 calories a day and are in ketosis you will slow down your weight loss than if you were eating 1500 calories a day. Yes I do agree not to point and weigh/measure etc but keep an eye on it. My friends ate way way too much and their weight loss was painfully slow until they had a few meals with us and realised they were considerably overeating. Also if any of you do use the IPD cook book some of the recipes are wrong for example they say the moussaka is for two meals when actually we get about 6 meals out of it. My friends were sitting down and wolfing the lot because the book said it was for two!

Good luck everyone, you are doing brilliantly Grin

ilovemyteddy · 23/04/2012 12:57

Shirley I was sick the week before bootcamp too (coming out of both ends), and lost 4lb, but only lost 0.6lb during the first week of bootcamp. So I'm guessing that BIWI is right and that your body (and mine) is holding onto everything. However I have cheated and had soya yoghurt for brekkie as I was worried about barfing everywhere if I ate eggs.

The two sizes smaller jeans I bought on Tuesday are already loose around the waist and bum so weigh is going from somewhere (didn't take any measurements when I started this - was too Blush)

FiddleDeFat · 23/04/2012 13:07

There's thread on chat where someone is talking about making an omelette with cartons of egg white and fry light. I could weep for them.

teaandthorazine · 23/04/2012 13:11

Omg fiddle, how DULL! I agree, makes you want to cry, how people are still sucked in by the low fat bollocks.

Shall we go over and give them the LC version - three eggs, yolks and all, butter, cheese and maybe even a dash of cream? Grin

FauxFox · 23/04/2012 13:11

KeepOrf's mackerel pate from the recipe thread is sooooooo delicious! Just had a massive dollop with a gem lettuce for lunch - thanks for the recipe Thanks

londonlottie · 23/04/2012 13:23

The low fat myth drives me insane. If low carb were more mainstream it would be so much easier for me us to keep to it and think of it as normal eating. You go into Starbucks and I don't think there is ONE thing I can eat there if I want to low carb.

MrsNouveauRichards · 23/04/2012 13:25

Hello.

Missed my morning cup of tea today as run out of milk, so had hot water and lemon instead.

B - yoghurt, flaxseed and some stewed strawberries (yes I know, but no other food in the house!)
S - babybel
L - sausages, roasted veg and 2 tinned plum tomatoes.
D ???

Feeling knackered today and hungry. No idea what to have for dinner. I need to go to the market tomorrow.

Any ideas what to do with cold roasted chicken?

ANTagony · 23/04/2012 13:40

I use up cold chicken in salad tossed with a spiced mayonnaise. DH had Cajun mayonnaise chicken salad today for work.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 23/04/2012 13:44

Good post!

And yes, good reminder about the IPD recipe book. The first time I made the moussaka and the beef korma I doubled the quantities, as I was cooking for all four of us - and it made a mahoosive amount! I'm not sure why the book is so badly edited.

Thegoddessblossom · 23/04/2012 13:44

Londonlottie, coffee shops are the worst. There is nothing LC in them whatsoever.

Mackerel salad was divine, but am wondering if I am falling into the overeating camp Spam mentions above. 5 small chunks of gorgonzola, olives, celery, mixed leaves, cucumber, dollop of coleslaw and mackerel fillet. Bloody yum though, huge and very filling.

Another thing that I think, that may help those tempted to fall off the wagon - eating this much fat is good, but only if you are not eating too many carbs. I know that seems like stating the completely bloody obvious, but you will just end up GAINING weight if you eat high fat and low carb all day/during the week and then lapse into high carb treats in the evening/at the weekend. That's what puts me off anyway.

ShirtyKnot · 23/04/2012 13:50

iloveteddy - AH! That's weird then, if we're both suffering slow loss after the poorliness of doom. (God, it was horrible )

Love that post spam and agree about the calories. I'm going to track for a few days on MFP and just check that I'm not scarfing down 3000 cals per day!

Twit · 23/04/2012 13:56

Have lost 8lbs this week, somewhat to my surprise.

To those who feel crap I sympathise, I could hardly crawl up the stairs last week. I am now ok except the tiredness which is Babytwit's fault. I ate crap and drank tea before to stay awake, and it shows as I'm knackered, but at least it's healthier iIYSWIM?
I still haven't cheated AT ALL except for BIWI granting me a smidge of plain porridge

So BIWI what treats have you in store for us next week? clingy

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 23/04/2012 13:57

Treats?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeelll.

I might not shout as much.

TheShapeJaper · 23/04/2012 13:58

Well I had a MiM as a snack yesterday (first one in over a week) and the scales were up by 2lbs this morning!

It's funny as I was eating those things a lot before and not really seeing much of a loss - and then last week, none of them and I managed to lose 8lbs so I definitely think that MiMs stall me or something. No more MiMs for me!

Twit · 23/04/2012 13:58

Oh and being some what of a Twit I bought whole linseed instead of ground because that was all our shit tescos had only I thought it was ground
Is there anything I can do with this? I have made hairgel out of it before but I was thinking of eating it this time.

Twit · 23/04/2012 14:00

I like the bossy take charge BIWI you are shaming me into good behaviour.

TheShapeJaper · 23/04/2012 14:01

BIWI, I had been badgering you about MiMs in the beginning but I held off... Until yesterday!

londonlottie · 23/04/2012 14:01

I have that IPD cookbook. While there are some good recipes in there (and I KNOW you're not meant to calorie count) some of them are horrifically indulgent - and definitely not meant for the portions stated. I think if you add up the calories in the salmon and feta bake it's almost 2000, in one dish for one person Shock

That said, it does have some good staples in and my problem is in refraining from overeating them!

ANTagony · 23/04/2012 14:02

The worst thing in coffee shops are the yummy little biscuit they sneak onto your oversize saucer that sits on the table staring at you. We had this yesterday in M&S coffee shop. We felt good just getting our coffees and finding comfortable loungy chairs to sit on then they arrived. Sugar coated round shortbreads. We resisted, weren't hungry but it was an effort to resist when they were just going to waste.
