BBB what a nightmare. My friend had a car insurance claim - someone drove into her parked car - and she had similar. Couldn't get anything like she'd lost for the money. I hope you can get it sorted.

Fab can you/do you exercise?

Glad to hear AF has gone Ali. Im still in full throes but resisting the refined carbs. Just feel shattered.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/06/2012 09:17

Fab, have protein with your breakfast every day, and have it at every meal. Weetabix alone is not solid enough to hold you all morning, your blood sugar will crash, and you'll spend all day trying to get it back up, probably by eating the sugary stuff/white carbs/fruit which you sense will make you feel better - but it only sets up more cravings.

I promise this works. No need for low fat/gimmicky diets.
And the couch 2 5k programme starts literally as a stroll in the park but gets you properly running within a couple of weeks. I'm still in my first week, but Idid it a few years ago and can guarantee it's a painless and gentle way to start exercising, as well as kickstarting weight loss.

Re. the speakers: mine are stereo and I do hear the 'you shoul hear this in your right ear...' bit, so I reckon they work well enough. I don't like anything in my ears, and I wake up tangled in the wire or with a painful ear with earplugs. I start off sleeping on my back due to back pain anyway, so it's not one-sided.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/06/2012 09:44

Fab I agree with Shotgun, you need protein. Special K is awful stuff - sugary, no substance to it.

Try some of these

I know you like having soup, but soup with bread or crackers is going to be mostly carbs again - which will leave you hungry and craving things later in the day.

Urgh - AF not gone!

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 10:45

Just basck from Waitrose. Settled down to watch This Morning. No tv. Angry

Just had carrots and houmous dip.

Within minutes of having the weetabix I was in the loo. That often happens.

I know Special K is shite, DH bought it and was trying to help. I will tell him not too when we start speaking again.

I have no clue about foods and what I should be eating. You say protein to me and I guess chicken but that is all.

Really low today so not hopeful.

I did 50 minutes on the rowing machine yesterday in 2 bits which was easy so will do that again today and see if I can get a dvd to play to keep me going.

That looks nice, Ali. I will make that definitely.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/06/2012 10:55

Protein.

Eggs, fish, meat, nuts, yoghurt, cheese. There is also protein in couscous, bulgar wheat, quinoa - but much less so.

So those fridge porridge things are good because they have yoghurt in, and I use flaxseed in them as well which has protein, and also add nuts - again more protein. And they are delicious. And very quick in the morning because you just grab the pot out of the fridge.
I don't eat the whole lot at once most days, I feel the full feeling about halfway through - so I put the lid on, it goes back in the fridge and I have the rest later in the morning.

A lot of the current diet 'rules' are lame (which is why we are Pauling!). Low-fat is shit - fat fills you up and stops you craving sugar. Low calorie is shit - you need fuel to keep you going otherwise your metabolism slows right down. Your base metabolic rate (what you would burn in a coma) will be around 1400-1500 per day, so you need that just to function. Then you need more than that to enable you to move around etc.

Exercise is good because it gives you energy, but do strength building (press ups, squats etc) as well as cardio (rowing, running) because when you get your muscle working it burns more calories at rest.

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 11:15

Thank you, that is really helpful.

I can't do press ups or squats but will do rowing and would like to be able to run but I am pretty rubbish at it.

HaveALittleFaith · 27/06/2012 12:45

I think I should be eating protein for breakfast more....I used to have protein shakes put off them a bit when the blender caught fire! abs they always filled me up. Will try adding a yoghurt and cutting out one slice of toast.
Lunch was yummy! Just had a (GF) smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich with cucumber, raspberry yoghurt and a cheeky little chocolate bar :) plenty of protein there!
It's funny thinking about it - when I did the Curves diet its all about food combining and balancing and having snacks with a higher carb or higher protein option. Even on higher carb I was eating a lot more protein and was less likely to snack on junk and my IBS was much better! I think I'll have a look at the recipes and snack ideas- I'll feed them bank if you want fab - but avoid the horrendously low calorie targets.

HaveALittleFaith · 27/06/2012 12:49

Oh and honestly fab? I was rubbish at running. Felt so awkward and could only do 45 seconds bursts but after sticking with it for 2 months I got better and could run for an hour without stopping :)

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 13:05

I have been asleep for about 2 hours Shock

Having my lunch now. Salad, cottage cheese, beetroot. What else do I need?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/06/2012 14:22

Well, some people low carbers would say that's fine - enjoy! But I can't cope without solid carbs as well as the protein. So I'd have brown rice/pasta/roll or just brown bread - even a baked spud if I plan ahead.

Sounds like a lovely combo - must get some beetroot, I love it roasted.

A book I found helpful with all this is 'Potatoes Not Prozac.' there's an online group and forum now, called Radiant Recovery. Worth a browse at least.

BigBoobiedBertha · 27/06/2012 17:08

Fab, if you really don't know much about food you could perhaps have a look at this book The Food Bible

It isn't a diet book, it is a book about what we need to eat for health and it has a very useful referenence in the back (well my edition did) about which food contain which nutrients. If it mentions weight loss it is only within the context of healthy eating. I haven't looked at mine for a long time so I could be wrong but as I remember it also discusses what each nutrient does in the body and why they are important. So for example, you were saying you didn't know what had protein apart from chicken and it would give you the main sources like meat, fish, eggs, diary, nuts etc and which are better in relation to each other. It is very interesting. I really should dig it out again.

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 17:12

Thank you for that. I don't actually eat a lot of potatoes but when I only had 2 children I had a jacket potato and cheese every day for lunch. I had cereal and toast for breakfast and dinner with DH and kept a steady weight. Having number 3 screwed everything up.

I could eat tea now with the kids as there is loads but I can't face it yet. I have had a nibble at theirs but if I did eat now I would be hungry later. The nurse said I should eat a small dinner.

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 17:14

BBB - thank you for that, it looks really interesting. Poor DH is ordering books from Amazon for me at the moment Grin.

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 17:18

on a daily basis was missed out.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/06/2012 17:55

The title of the PnP book is quite misleading; it's actually more about using good nutrition to keep your blood sugar level and hence your mood steady. There's a lot of basic info on the homepage of the website I linked to, to give you an idea of whether you might be helped by the WOE.

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 18:44

My blood pressure is always okay but I do feel a bit out of it at times and not all there. Is that blood sugar issues?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/06/2012 19:10

Yes it could be - although I'm not a doctor, obv. I do know from my own experience that you feel like a different person when your body's (and brain's) systems are properly nourished.

Blood pressure is a separate thing altogether. Have a look at the link for a basic idea of the theory - it's very informative and supportive.

HaveALittleFaith · 27/06/2012 19:45

It certainly could be blood sugar if you're not eating things that sustain you. I did have a friend who swore by taking a chromium supplement to stave off sugar cravings and keep her blood sugars stable.

I think Paul is influencing me! I've been more proactive at home - trying to do something for about 30 minutes each night room by room. I'm finding it easier to keep on top of things and the house looks better! I'd never manage a few hours blitzing with the pain I'm in but can do a bit each night.
I had a cheeky! crunchie ice cream when I'd done my jobs :) then pizza for tea. I cut off one quarter for breakfast tomorrow and thought I'd eat the rest but I've left another quarter. I was too full. I'm clearly becoming influenced by the CD!

JustFabulous · 27/06/2012 19:50

I really need to start taking my vitamins again. Some of them have to be taken so long before a meal or with a meal and I never remember.

Hi and good morning all Smile waves back

ppeatfruit · 28/06/2012 07:28

Oh one thing to remember REf.food we are all different and therefore different foods agree and disagree with us e.g. DD2 is very allergic to chicken but brilliant with turkey.

JustFabulous · 28/06/2012 08:01

I think I have a problem with Weetabix as it went straight through me yesterday. Really annoying as I like it. Haven't eatne yet. Stressed as DC1 and ", oh and 3 are being annoying/rude/ignoring me.

JustFabulous · 28/06/2012 12:59

Where is everyone????

Success to report! I had 3 (too many?) eggs scrambled with milk on one wholemeal pitta for a late breakfast and later did half an hour on the rowing machine. Have been drinking water and skimmed milk. Not hungry yet even though have yummy lunch planned. Normally that would be enough to get me eating even without being hungry.

MamaEmily · 28/06/2012 14:10

Hi, sorry if I'm barging in here! I've used PMK's system years ago with some great success, but gradually slipped back into old habits and have recently (well, DD2 is now 6 months!) had 2 babies within 14 months of each other! I am definitely not one of those people who slips straight back into their old jeans after a baby lol, and now I'm 2stone heavier than I've ever been :s. Been trawling for quick-fix pills but think I'm just going to give PMK a go as his system worked so well in past.

Basically, just wanted to ask for some advice! My partner is one of those annoying people who eats whatever he wants and never puts weight on - so there's a lot of temptation with snacks, cakes and large meal sizes - anyone else have this!?

Also, I'm a veggie, any tips for things that might help - e.g. high protein things I could eat that aren't too high in fat (cheese is a weakness of mine!)? I don't like whole nuts, so is there something else?

I'm getting married next year and really want to slim down to where I was pre-babies as I know i'll have wedding photos forever and don't want to hate how I look in them!

Sorry for essay, but any help/tips/advice/motivational weight loss stories would be much appreciated!
