How does one stay motivated when at least 3 stone to lose?

I find the first 3 weeks easy, then I just want to pack it all in. I think its because it's more than just a few pounds I need to lose. I need to lose AT LEAST 3 stone, just to be in the healthy weight range.

I know it's going to take quite some time. I know there's no hurrying it, but I'm just so overwhelmed by it all.

I thought about joining ww again, but am trying myfitnesspal instead - I love being able to scan barcodes in on my iPhone!!! It is free and for now seems to be working for me, well when I track properly... although if you are going to go to the meetings then I think more worth it if that makes sense! Glad I'm not the only one that goes to bed early!

Flojo1979 · 01/05/2012 20:59

ooo I like the idea of scanning barcodes! I wonder if theres an android app for that too!!

flojo I'm using my fitness pal on Android is Brill &become a daily routine for me since Xmas, I've lost nearly 2stone. I really recommend it as its helped me change my eating habits not just be on "a diet", once your used it for couple weeks it has all your usual foods near top of the list, so I tend to have same stuff for breakie and lunch, allocate myself 500c for dinner the I know how much walking or exercise I have to do to earn my treats.

mrsHP I'm sorry for your loss that's tough going but can you use it too motivate you. I struggled to conceive my 2nd DD it helped me lose a stone before I did eventually and it was good to get my BMI to 29.7 meant I didn't have to have consultant led care but my old midwife. I m now trying to my BMI to 26, which is another stone to lose but I've really stalled the last two weeks.

I too normally in bed early with teeth brushed as it stops me nibbling in the danger zone 8-9pm!

WhereAreTheCakes · 02/05/2012 08:54

Mummalish come back.

I'm in same boat too and lurking here getting inspiration and motivation!

Each pound off seems to be a struggle plus a victory and yet I have been known to pile on 8 pounds in a week.

Anyway after a bit of yo-yo-ing at start of year have lost 8 pounds - with just under 3 stone to go to get me well within 'normal weight'. BMI currently at 30.

Using myfitnesspal (1200 cals/day) and find it really great - though sticking to same foods most days as I know they work for me.

HipHopOpotomus · 02/05/2012 11:14

I also think the barcode scanner on
MFP is amazing!

Fairenuff · 02/05/2012 17:18

OK I think I'm going to have to join MFP (baa - follows the crowd Grin). So what do I do? Just google it and register or something? I'll have a look and report back later.

ssmile · 02/05/2012 19:12

I got MFP as an app for my Android phone, even my husband did it for 8weeks he lost 1.5stone its very simple just tracks your calories and exercise, gives graphs, you can log your weight loss and use built in barcode scanner to add in your food using your camera on the phone, its Brill! If you want to lose weight with other people you can have "friends" too who can see your updates to help encourage each other bit like WW but free.

Hope it helps you.

Flojo1979 · 02/05/2012 21:26

Ooo I'm def gonna get MFP now then, off to download, then off to look in the kitchen cupboard to find things to scan, umm scrap that, best stay away from the kitchen tonight!

Flojo1979 · 02/05/2012 21:53

Ok, no one warned me I'd have to weigh in! The bit I've been avoiding for a very long time...
Stands up...my names flojo and I am fat.
I'm 5'9", 14st3lbs.
There, I said it out loud, can't avoid it any more!
Got 1200 cals each day and today I'm minus 220 and that's when I thought I'd done well, ooops!

Flojo1979 · 02/05/2012 21:54

40 cals in a cuppa tea Shock
I have about half a dozen, ooo that's gonna be worse than giving up chocolate!

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/05/2012 07:55

Flojo don't panic! I had set MFP for losing 2 lbs per week and was on 1200 cals. Couldn't stick to it and would go over then think now I'm over who cares. Anyway I changed my settings to losing 1 lb per week Nd this increased my cals by 280 cals a day. So now I try to stay 280 cals either side as this means I won't put on.

Therefore you being 220 over means you be losing just over 1 lb a week on aveeage i think!

ssmile · 03/05/2012 10:56

as I understand it A 1lb of fat is supposed to be 3500 calories, if the average woman needs 2000c a day to maintain weight then 7days x 500 less calories a day should equal approx a lb of fat a week lost. BUT we all have slightly different metabolisms etc so there are variations. I tend to only lose weight if exercising, normally hours walk a day min, just find what works for you. She says currently eating a crunchie bar with my mid morning cuppa :o my treat most days all 187calories.

Flojo1979 · 03/05/2012 13:17

Ah ok, I think it will help tho, my so called healthy lunch (2 lettuce and mayo wraps) has turned out to be not so healthy in cals, so its helping me wise up on what's good and what's not.
If I can cut out the evening munching then I think it'll make a huge difference and if I can motivate myself to exercise that would help.

Trickysue · 03/05/2012 14:36

Hi ladies ,
Joined MFP yesterday and was shocked to see that I was consuming way more than I realised. Anyway went out and bought new set of scales today and well put it like this they were more of a shock .....I am officially at my heaviest (there I have said it out loud - I do have 2 beautiful children to show for it but they are too small to forcefeed me all the cake and stodge I have become accostomed to since being on maternity leave).
So I need to lose weight and theres a few stone I need to shed so I was hoping I could come and join your jolly thread - to give and receive some support through this challenging time lol.

HipHopOpotomus · 03/05/2012 14:48

I'm on MFP as HipHopOpotomus2 - please add me as a friend!!!

It's really working for me - 11 kg lost to date. Check me walking around shops at lunchtime scanning food (not everything has calorie info but it ALL has a barcode)

loveulotslikejellytots · 03/05/2012 21:13

Hi All

Sorry, been a mad few days since I last came on. I've not weighed myself again. The day after the bad day started fine, and it's gone slowly downhill from there. Work has gone crazy, i've not been getting in until stupidly late because i'm sorting out someone else's cock up. My lovely DH made me my favourite pasta to cheer me up Tuesday night (bacon and cheese), which was lovely and has done all the cooking this week, so it's probably not the healthy option!

It's just the exercise, i've not had any time. It's been dark by the time i've got in and I just want a bath and my bed! I've managed 10 minutes here and there on the exercise bike but not as much as I'd like.

Anyway, the point of this is i'm actually quite proud of myself. I haven't chipped in and got a take away with everyone else who's stayed late at work this week. I've done some exercise and i've not gone home and wolfed a pack of jaffa cakes or 3 bags of crisps because I feel bad.

I agree that MFP is useful, I didn't realise how many calories were in some of the stuff I would class as 'good' foods. Does anyone know if it also calculates the fat in something. Only because I scanned a bounty and it only had 134 calories, but it had 7g of fat. Just a thought really.

loveulotslikejellytots · 03/05/2012 21:17

Oh and I meant to say good luck MrsHP. ssmile do they taste ok. I tried the chocolate ones a while ago, they're horrible!

DH and I have got tomorrow off work so i've got a lovely walk along the seafront tomorrow, should be about 5 miles there and back then cinema. The dog's getting a few long walks and i'm tackling the food this weekend. I'm going to do a proper meal plan for next week, which should hopefully put a stop to DH's spur of the moment cheesy pastas!!!

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/05/2012 21:18

Yes, it does do some nutritional analysis - I use this for carbs as diabetic. Are you accessing it on phone or website?

MrsHerculePoirot · 03/05/2012 21:19

Oh and well done on doing so well this week especially in the face of take aways!!!!
