Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

I think the headache is diet related, especially the lack of sugar. I also have monthly visit, so could be that too.

SparkySparrow · 06/01/2012 12:28

Hang in there Tarty putyouhaton and lisa !

I've had headache's to. I think (for me) its sugar withdrawal. I was eating loads and suddenly stopping eating it has caused headaches. They have been better today and yesterday.

I had some major cravings last night, but then dh was flicking and landed on a program about a woman who killed her nephew because she fell on him, couldn't move because she was so fat, and the poor boy suffocated! :( So sad but I have the image of her in my head its giving me a kick up the arse!

So far today I've had my porridge. Its a big salad with low fat vinegarette, and a few ryvita for lunch.

Well done to those who have already lost!! :) I'm itching to weigh myself, but going to put it of till my weigh day on Tues!!

putyourhatonsweetie · 06/01/2012 12:54

thanks sparky worked hard on my shred and not going to let one biscuit scupper me!

LollipopViolet · 06/01/2012 13:18

Hello ladies! Thought I'd join in. I've got a gym goers/exercise thread gooing if you want to join in there too :)

Not been able to gym this week as have what could be the start of a cold, and I'm off away for the weekend with friends tomorrow so didn't want to be ill.

Only problem is, we'll be eating out all weekend, and drinking. I need to figure out what I can drink without it setting me back. Don't drink beer, occasionally drink wine, but mostly cider or cocktails, which I love :( Don't drink them very often though. Also like Jack Daniels and Coke. I don't drink often, usually only when I do these trips with friends. Must try and be good.

Started before Christmas at 83.5kg, down to 81.1 now :) So think I've lost about 4lbs so far? I'm aiming for 9 stone but my stupid scales do kg's so I'm having to convert, I've just worked out that 9st would be 126lbs, so 57kgs or thereabouts.

buttonmoon78 · 06/01/2012 13:52

Thanks for the welcome. Am off to check out that link as when I did ww centuries ago I know that writing everything down was a big help as I left it lying about and was too embarassed to cheat as I knew dh/dds would see it and know I'd been cheating!

Not doing too badly today. Crunchy oat cereal for breakfast and two english muffins with bramble jelly for lunch. Must eat some fruit at some point. Going to make chilli for tea so that will be pretty low fat too.

Last night I ate what dh cooked (sausage and onion pie) which wasn't too bad as he cooked the fat off the sausages first, and they were quality sausages (ie lots of meat rather than crappy fillers) and I only had a small spoonful with loads of shredded greens.

Once I've cleared all the Christmas debris from the house, I'm going to hunt out my running shoes and aim for 0-5k in 6 weeks. I've done it before, I can damn well do it again!

Vicky08 · 06/01/2012 14:45

Hi everybody, until today I've been OK but now the sugar cravings are really kicking in. After lunch I could have killed for some sugar but I made do with a fat free yogurt.

Thanks for the recipe mrspepperpotty, sounds delicious, I'll give it a try some day next week.

Well done everybody, you're all doing really well even if you are having a few slip ups in the long term it doesn't matter, we just have to remember that they are only slip ups and we're not going to let them get the better of us.

Food wise I'm doing well but I haven't done any exercise yet which is getting me down a bit, I just don't have the time and when I do it's quite late and I'm knackered.

I'm also still having problems with portion control, I just can't get my head around eating smaller portions.

Hope everyone's having a good day.

LaFilleSurLePont · 06/01/2012 15:05

Good luck with TTC,Tarty. Interesting to hear from others who are in the same situation.

NewYearsRevolution · 06/01/2012 15:33

Vicky08 - exercise is my difficulty too. I have a toddler and a baby. If it was just DD1 we could do zumba together or run around the park, but doesn't really work with a baby. I'm just trying to do a lot of walking and focusing on the fact that my life is quite active - god knows how many times I'm up and down the stairs. Also working hard on the old pelvic floor so I'm not quite so nervous about doing things like bouncing up and down with DD when she wants to pretend to be a rabbit. Blush

Hathall · 06/01/2012 16:49

Its good to see everyone is doing so well.

Whattodowithlife I'm afraid 1200 cals is very realistic! Its what Myfitnesspal has given me and its only then that I lose weight. It just goes to show how easy it is to overeat!

I'm not doing too badly today. I was stressed with work again and found some carrot batons to munch on.

I had yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, pitta bread and covent garden soup for lunch and I'm about to do a veg pilau and tandoori chicken for dinner. Yum.

mrspepperpotty · 06/01/2012 17:17

Sounds like everyone is doing really well! I've had quite a good day too - porridge for breakfast, ham and cucumber sandwich for lunch, supper will be a piece of breaded fish and lots of veg plus a yoghurt if I'm hungry. I did succumb to two biscuits though.

WhatToDoWithLife, I think 1200-1400 calories is quite realistic for weight loss. But the important thing is finding something you can stick to for the medium term - not just for a couple of weeks. In my experience you tend to go over at the beginning (because you aren't in the habit of calorie couting) and find you're not really losing which is a bit disheartening, or else you stick to it and end up feeling very hungry! Either way you are at risk of falling off the wagon. But if you stick to it, you start to find your body adapting to the amount of food expects, and also you get better at finding ways of cutting down.

SparkySparrow · 06/01/2012 17:37

I've caved!! :( Had two choc digestive and they tasted so, so good! But I regret it now! They were 2 points each. Although I am pleased as I stopped at two, before I would have eaten about 6! Blush

Iv'e felt really good today, aswel. Cold's going, had a great time at the park with ds, had a go on my new bike Grin . Will get dh to eat the last remaining biscuits tonight so I can't slip up again!

WhatToDoWithLife mrspepperpotty's right. It is about right for weight loss. You need to find foods that are sensible in calories but fill you up. Once you've managed the first few days it will get easier! :)

drywhiteplease · 06/01/2012 17:41

I am off to town now to buy oat bran in health food shop to make Dukan galette as per diet.sounds disgusting. I am the one doing Dukan from Monday with aim of loosing a stone. If Mrs Middleton can do it so can I!
Have set up rowing machine in garage (cold), booked my Zumba classes for next week and stocked up on protein.
Every year my nyresolution is to loose a stone and I never manage it.The only time I lost weight was before my wedding 17yrs ago.So I am hoping this forum will egg me on.
Also I will miss alcohol.whattodo your comment about calories in tonic are v worrying ESP since my PILs bought me a huge bottle of Bombay sapphire and 24individual cans ordinary tonic for christmas. Will have to get rid ASAP.(or drink it all this weekend!)

drywhiteplease · 06/01/2012 18:44

Bloody hell!bought wrong stuff! Wheat bran!now have to go back to town to buy oat bran !

LaFilleSurLePont · 06/01/2012 18:53

Day 1 for me. I joined Slimming World yesterday, but only started the diet today.

Breakfast was two clementines. That was all I had in the house, and I wanted to keep my bread allowance for lunch. I'm not a breakfast person so forcing down the clementines was difficult enough.

Lunch. Tin of mackerel in tomato sauce on a slice of wholemeal bread and another clementine. I went shopping after lunch so have stocked up on healthy foods.

Snack. Banana, blueberries and grapes with fat free vanilla yoghurt.

Dinner. I made Jamie Oliver's spring soup, with a few changes , which contained broccoli, cauliflower, cannellini beans, chopped tinned tomatoes, celery, carrots, onion, garlic, spinach and kale. It was delicious.I was amazed at how good it tasted.

I have 9 1/2 syns left so I'm going to have a coffee with sugar, and two fun size bags of Buttons as my treat.

And I'll try to squeeze in an apple.

Mollyfloss · 06/01/2012 20:10

Just did my first day on the dukan diet! In the attack phase you eat nothing but proteins except for the 1.5 tbsp of oatbran recommended so I had the gallette (made from oatbran, sweetener, egg & 0% fomage frais), turkey burgers (minced turkey, onion, egg), sirloin steak, smoked salmon, chicken cooked with garlic, paprika, pepper) & some 0% fromage frais & 34 0% vamilla yoghurts. Weird for me to eat only proteins as I LOVE carbs but I'm not hungry and can have as many diet coke's & coffee's as I like even with some skimmed milk & sweetener. The attack phase lasts 1 to 10 days depending on how much you want to lose so I'll be doing it for 3 or 4 days. Anyone want to join me? :)

Mollyfloss · 06/01/2012 20:13

drywhiteplease: I got this one in Waitrose www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductView-10317-10001-101285-Mornflake+oatbran

Not sure it's exactly milled or whatever the way Dukan wants but it's 100% oatbran.

SparkySparrow · 06/01/2012 20:13

Wow Mollyfloss , that's loads!
I'm not a big meat eater so its not for me, but well done on getting started! :)

Mollyfloss · 06/01/2012 20:22

Thanks Sparky. you are allowed to eat as many proteins as you like. There is a specific list of proteins you can have and you can have as much as you like of those but nothing else apart from specific extras such as herbs and spices etc so there is no ambiguity. I'm not a huge meat eater either so we'll see how it goes. Not hungry but would love a glass of wine.... sigh....

Hathall · 06/01/2012 20:25

Molly that is loads! Did you really eat 34 0% Vanilla yoghurts Shock Grin

SparkySparrow · 06/01/2012 20:28
