Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Sat there all smug thinking I'm actually happy its not me. I was feeling low but that food focus site kinda picked me up again.
Thank you sparky
And thank you to everyone here whose supporting me

fazsaeed · 31/01/2012 22:38

Oo fairenuff thanks for mentioning the site and sparkythabks giving link.
The last time I got weighed before this was at my hospital appointment and I was 102. Time before that I was 106 at docs then started to eat healthy but then binged loads.

putyourhatonsweetie · 31/01/2012 23:32

welcome kaz, 5lb is a great start, hopefully we can help you stick with it.

Keep at it fazsaeed.

mrspepperpotty · 01/02/2012 07:42

No loss for me this week. I'm disappointed but not really surprised as I had a bad weekend - we had friends over for dinner and they all brought chocs!! Determined to do better next week.

mrspepperpotty · 01/02/2012 07:53

TP, I bought a little spotty notebook to use as a food diary but it is still blank!! The problem is that when I eat something naughty I don't want to write it down, I just want to put it behind me! I guess this is classic denial? So my resolution for this week is to write down every single thing!

Hathall · 01/02/2012 10:19

Well done to everyone who's lost weight.

I haven't lost anything this week. I'm a bit disappointed but I probably didn't try as hard as I could have. I ate whatever I wanted over the weekend at my nephews birthday. There was loads of food.
I've been shredding everyday except Saturday and will do the last day of level 1 today.

I'm going to be very strict about putting everything in my food diary. I've been using myfitnesspal on and off so I'm going to use it properly now so I'll join you Mrspepperpotty in diary keeping and better week endeavours!

Fazsaeed keep going and the weight will come off. I think you're doing really well. Are you Asian? Just wondering because of your name. I am and I find its difficult to lose weight because of the food culture! Everything seems to revolve around food Grin and most of it is really tasty!

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2012 11:25

mrspepperpotty
you have spotted your core problem and can now deal with it.
Go get a new book like this
www.the-tickle-company.co.uk/acatalog/large-pink-hearts-notebook.html
and keep it on the kitchen counter - open at todays page

today I've had:
a huge cup of tea with s/s milk
a glass of oj
a slice of wafer thin ham while making lunches

  • swum a mile -
a big coffee with s/s milk a shortbread finger

THAT is a food diary - stick with something like that and you will lose weight

CupOfBrownJoy · 01/02/2012 12:04

Lost 2 pounds today at weigh in.

I'm pleased, but I seem to be a bit stuck around 11 stone at the moment, I need another good weight loss next week to get me properly under....

Have a good day everyone!

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 13:08

Yep hathall Asian, we don't eat too much Asian food. Chappatti however only has 40 cals according to calorie counter app.
I've done good today.
Cereal with ss milk.
No snacks
4 baked potato chips
Tuna w sweetcorn low fat version
Lots of salad

How do you manage then hathall?

Chooster · 01/02/2012 13:26

Can I join in your gang?? Its the first day of "fit february" for me Smile... Have had a stubborn stone that is hangin around since ds3 was born a year ago - mind you I've not really been trying to lose it as I've been enjoying my food too much. But a big birthday is coming up at the end of March and I really want to feel good by then. I reckon a stone will do it.

I've tried Atkins a couple of times - the first time was really good (ie it worked but didnt enjoy it much!), but this recent time, I hated it - I felt sick and just couldnt face more cheese and meat - so I gave up after about 4 days.

So this has led me here!! I'd like to lose it the healthy fad free way as I still want to enjoy my food and meals out etc...

Anyway, today so far so good - porridge, soup, a ham roll and a 'go ahead' bar... DH is doing the shopping today and I've told him that I'm being good for a month so am hoping he's got some good stuff in! Smile.

Hathall · 01/02/2012 13:28

At home, its no problem as we have a varied and pretty healthy diet (apart from my snacking!) but its the weekends that always throw me.
There always seems to be some family thing going on and to be honest, I don't manage them very well as I love food! i always end up undoing all my good work for the week.
I do need to learn how to eat less when out and about so I can get rid of this extra 2 stone. Grr.

So far so good here as well. Porridge for breakfast, Innocent veg pot for lunch (post-supermarket quick lunch treat Smile), meat free bean burger and steamed veg, vanilla fat free yoghurt for dinner. Snacks are apple and satsuma.

Chooster · 01/02/2012 13:30

Oh yes and hathall - are you doing that shred DVD - I've got it but not tried it yet - is it worth me digging it out... Just not sure I'll find the time to do it every day though?? Does it take a long time?

Hathall · 01/02/2012 13:31

Hi Chooster. I've done Atkins too and it made me ill. I've been trying to low carb recently and I don't think it suits me and my um digestive system to put it politely. I've now decided to do the opposite and go vegetarian for a week. I'm going to try to have lots of wholegrains, pulses, veg and fruit.
Good luck.

Hathall · 01/02/2012 13:33

X post. The shred dvd is brill. It takes no more than 1/2 hr. It's 3 sessions of 3 minutes weights, 2 minutes cardio, 1 minute abs so 18mins of actual exercise but its pretty intense.
Go for it!

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 14:22

I don't really eat what everyone else does anymore. Dinner I have a salad and tea if the family tea is healthy I will eat it if not then warm salad.

We have curry once a week So much for being Asian lol.

Tomorrow and saturday will be hard. 2 bday parties, 1 at restaurant- buffet sat will be at home. Sat will be ok but out will be hard!

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 14:23

Welcome chooster to your fat free friends group lol.

mrspepperpotty · 01/02/2012 14:55

Hi Chooster. I tried atkins years ago and hated it - really missed my carbs and fruit. I'm sure it's not healthy.

SparkySparrow · 01/02/2012 16:02

Hi Chooster !

Just think fazsaeed , if you can get through tomorrow and sat then you will feel really good about yourself!!

SparkySparrow · 01/02/2012 16:37

I would recommend shredding as well Chooster . I haven't stuck to it every day but when I have managed to do it, its great. Very fast moving so you don't have a chance to get bored and you can really feel it when you stop.

Good day so far for me. Banana for brekkie (was in a major rush!) , ham and egg salad for lunch with a wholemeal roll, dinner will probably be soup and a fruit salad, I don't really feel too hungry at the minute .

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2012 16:45

Welcome Chooster - hopefully this will be the last diet thread you will ever need to join!

Fazsaeed - buffets : a tip from one of my uberfit (now actually a bit thin) friends.
Get your plate. Half fill it with lettuce. Leave the lettuce there all meal. Fit the remaining food on the other half of the plate. You can therefore look polite, try a bit of everything but not eat too much.

How is everybody doing on their food diaries?
You HAVE to be honest with yourself and write down everything, no matter how embarrassing. Only then can you look at the list and know what has to stop.

Fairenuff · 01/02/2012 16:45

Hello Chooster and welcome. I have never tried Atkins but I'm sure all that meat cannot be good for you. Anyway, any diet that you cannot stick to for the rest of your life, is a fad diet, by definition.

Fazsaeed you could buy a small (one pot) slow cooker and when your family meal is not healthy, you could chuck in a little bit of meat, lots of veg and a low fat sauce. Really easy to do, really tasty meals. Have it with a little brown rice or small jacket potato if you want some carbs.

All those who struggle with weekends - I think there are lots of us in that boat. I used to lose a couple of pounds in the week, then gain a couple at the weekend and for ages and ages I kept hovering around the same weight, not losing much at all.

So now, I dig deep to find that extra bit of determination to get me through the weekend.

All those tempting high calorie foods are your enemy. You think you want them but always, always regret it next weigh in. I don't know anyone who says "I'm really glad I had that doughnut last Tuesday and pizza on Friday". Most people say, "I wish I hadn't had it".

When you want to lose weight nothing feels as good as seeing those numbers go down. Nothing. Nothing you eat could make you feel that good. Not even chocolate. So c'mon girls. Keep at it. We can do this!

mrspepperpotty it might also help to write down the time you eat, especially those things you don't want to write down. You might see a pattern, a time of day when you are more likely to eat them and be able to head it off with a yoghurt (or something) instead?

Fit February . . . I like the sound of that Smile

Vicky08 · 01/02/2012 19:02

Hi everyone, I'm loaded with the cold, I have a really bad cough and am knackered because it's not letting me sleep much at night but I'm trying my best to be good.

It's 1st February which means that I've been eating healthily for a whole month, this is the longest I've ever lasted :o It's true that one of the biggest motivations is seening the numbers going down on the scales. I also get a lot of motivation from you lot on this thread, I love to see how you're all doing, it keeps me on the right track. And I also have all of my small goals that I'm reaching. The next one is to get below 80 Kilos, hopefully I'll get there this week.

Welcome Chooster and kaz

SparkySparrow · 01/02/2012 19:22

Hope you feel better soon vicky .
Its the longest I've been eating healthily too minus a few slip ups .

Fit February here we come! Smile

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 19:23

I feel good atm.
Had round about 400cals for tea :) I'm having some fruit in a little while

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 19:31

Vicky how much have you lost over the month?
That will motivate me, knowing that it does actually work lol.
Junk food no longer appeals to me, once on the lips forever on your hips lol.
