Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Well done you two!

fazsaeed · 30/01/2012 18:37

Well done for losing weight. Haven't weighed myself yet...

TartyMcFarty · 30/01/2012 19:48

Well dine fairenuff and sparky - excellent losses!

Vicky08 · 30/01/2012 20:06

Well done fairenuff and sparkysparrow. I've lost 1 1/2lbs this week.

Today I have a terrible headcold, when I got home all I wanted to do was comfort eat but i was strong and had a chicken and veg wrap, the wrap was my carb comfort food but if there had been any choc in the house I think I would have finised the lot of. For breakfast I had wholemeal toast and for lunch grilled fish and an apple and orange.

I'm another one that likes to have a snack at some stage during the day, when I'm at home I have a yogurt or orange during the afternoon and when I'm at work I have a piece of fruit at breaktime, midmorning.

Yesterday I was so happy with the exercise I did and I couldn't wait to do more today but i just feel so rotten, I'm going to have a rest today.

Going to have an early night tonight.

SparkySparrow · 30/01/2012 20:17

Hope you feel better soon vicky and well done for staying on track!

TalkinPeace2 · 30/01/2012 20:29

did not make it to the gym today.
If I weighed how much snot I'd produced today, but then took account of how much my head feels like its full I've probably gained weight - upside no sense of smell so eaten almost nothing!
Will weigh in tomorrow.

Well done everybody.
The little and often weight losses are the long term ones.

Fairenuff · 30/01/2012 21:55

Well done Sparky and Vicky and I hope all those feeling poorly get a good nights rest tonight. Hot water with a squirt of lemon juice and curl up under a warm duvet, is the order of the day.

putyourhatonsweetie · 30/01/2012 22:15

well done sparky fairenuff and vicky, brilliant all round. Hope you are feeling better talkinpeace

forgot to say yesterday that IT finally happened...someone I hadn't seen for a while asked if I had lost weight. I could have kissed her, just what I needed when the scales hadn't budged.

I'm feeling a bit low so hoping a day out and about on my feet will help.

mrspepperpotty · 31/01/2012 11:38

Well done on the weight loss fairenuff, sparky and vicky! And well done for maintaining putyourhaton* - hopefully you'll see a loss next week.

My view on the snacks thing is to do whatever works for you. So if you are snacking and losing weight then that's fine, as you must be eating healthily overall, but if you are trying to lose and the weight is staying on then you need to think about making a change - and the most obvious one might be cutting out snacks. It's all about the results!

Hope the poorly people are feeling better this morning.

TalkinPeace2 · 31/01/2012 15:16

sweetie
it may be that you LOOK slimmer as you are eating better so your skin looks better and you are getting more toned.

Scales stubbornly stuck for me today - but at least they did not go up!
Once I shift this cold I can do more exercise but down dog with a runny nose was less than enjoyable this morning.

SparkySparrow · 31/01/2012 16:09

I have decided to ditch Weightwatchers (for a few weeks at least!)
I was thinking about it yesterday, and decided today that I would give it a go on my own.
I feel that I'm getting a bit obsessive about 'point counting'! I'm sure I have a slight trace of OCD in me that hasn't compleatly come out yet but I feel that its becoming abit too much! Sorry if that doesn't make sense Confused .

So here's the new plan:

  • Eat 2/3 meals a day. (Sometimes I feel better with 2, other days 3, compleatly depends on what I'm doing)
-Lots of water -No snacks (I don't need them, they are comfort to me!) -No junk -Some sort of exercise every day (even if its just 10mins power walk!) -Watch portions! -Limited bread

Most of this I have been doing anyway but I would like to see if I can do it on my own without following ww point for point! Hopefully it will work if not back to ww I go! Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 31/01/2012 16:16

All I would add is to do a food diary (even without the ww points down the side) as then if it goes well you know what works
and if it goes pear shaped (in all senses of the word) you can put on the WW points and work out where

SparkySparrow · 31/01/2012 16:20

Good thinking TP ! Thanks :)

lisad123 · 31/01/2012 16:33

Omg I ache in places I didn't even know existed today Blush

SwedishKaz · 31/01/2012 17:02

I want to join please?
I have to loose just over 3 stone. I've lost 5 pounds since Christmas and I need some support to be able to keep it up.
I have some issues with junk food. I normally eat pretty healthy lunches and dinners, but it's what I stuff myself with in between!
Anyway, I am looking forward to a Summer feeling good about myself!

fazsaeed · 31/01/2012 19:04

Feeling pretty low.
Our scales are dont work. One place I'm 5 kg lighter than the other lol.
Day not been too bad

I'm losing hope slowly :(

fazsaeed · 31/01/2012 19:07

Welcome to the group kaz :)

CupOfBrownJoy · 31/01/2012 19:54

Don't lose hope fazsaeed!!

Its so important to keep going, and when you feel down its even more improtant to keep on track.

Otherwise, you'll binge, then you'll feel even worse, so you'll binge again - and the shame spiral begins once more.....

Keep at it - what choice do you have? If you quit now, you'll definitely not lose the weight! As long as you keep trying, then some weeks you'll lose, some you'll maintain and some weeks you might even put on, but in the long term you WILL lose weight, you WILL feel healthier and happier, you will pass on some fantastic life skills to your DS...... why would you quit now?

Go and invest in some decent scales, keep them in the back of the wardrobe and bring them out once a week on weigh in day.

And welcome to kaz Smile

TalkinPeace2 · 31/01/2012 20:13

Welcome Kaz.
Come and join the thread that is the antidote to faddy diets.

Fazsaeed
silly thought - if your little person is small enough, could you pop into your GP surgery on a baby clinic day and ask to weigh yourself on their ever so accurate lever scales? Once you tell them the reason they will support you.
If the heavier scales are right, how much have you lost since you joined this thread?

Fairenuff · 31/01/2012 20:25

Why are you feeling low fazsaeed?

It can't just be the scales, it's too early for you to weigh in. Your weight can fluctuate a lot in just one day, never mind day to day. Pick a day and time and, if possible, wear roughly the same type of clothes (naked is best if you're weighing in at home). Then take a starting weight if you haven't done so already, and wait a whole week before you weigh again. I promise you will see a difference if you are not going over your daily calorie allowance.

Have a look at a website called Food Focus (sorry, I'm no good at doing links, perhaps someone else could help you there). You can work out how many calories you should be eating. Also, you can easily check calorie content of food before you eat it, rather than after.

Hope this helps. Please don't give up, you have made such a good start. I know you don't have supportive people around you, but you have us x

Fairenuff · 31/01/2012 20:26

Oh, yes, hello Kaz Smile

SparkySparrow · 31/01/2012 20:44

fazsaeed Food focus :)
Invest in some scales (alot are on offer at the mo) , weigh yourself, then shove them somewhere ridiculously difficult to get them out of, this way you won't be tempted by mid week weigh ins! Mine are in a kitchen cupboard, underneath the baking stuff, believe me, its alot of hassle to dig them out every week, but it odes the job!
Don't give up! As soon as you start to see results you will get a buzz and want to keep going!

Welcome kaz :)

Fairenuff · 31/01/2012 20:58

Thanks Sparky, that link works well Smile.

fazsaeed · 31/01/2012 22:03

Thank you :)
Lil Sis tried doing what I'm doing but she has caved in. That's good enough to inspire me more. First few days are hard but thank you for helping. I'm Getting ds weighed on Thursday. Im going to order one from eBay

mrspepperpotty · 31/01/2012 22:21

Welcome kaz

fazsaeed, don't expect too much too soon. If you stick to this you will lose weight, maybe not as quickly as you hoped, but that doesn't matter as long as you lose it. Someone up thread said this is a marathon not a sprint!

If your scales give different weight in different places (I find this sometimes), just always use them in the same spot. It doesn't matter which is correct, it's the change week to week which is important.
