Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Hope you feel better Vicky

It looks like everyone is doing really well. I've had a good day today too so I'm pleased.

I like the idea of fit February!

Flojo1979 · 01/02/2012 21:00

Hi, thanx for all the suggestions. Afraid I've only just read them, after eating 4 crumpets and half a packet of bourbons. Now I feel really bad after such a serious binge. I'm gonna try and hold on to this feeling and in future remember how bad I felt in the hope that it'll stop me. Maybe I need to give up the soaps as there seems to be a connection, as soon as kids go bed its my time, to watch soaps and I can't seem to do that without the compulsion to eat :(
Sorry guys, I'm such a failure.

Vicky08 · 01/02/2012 21:01

Over the month I've lost 5 kilos, most came off in the first 2 weeks. Then the loss has been slower but steady. I think it's important to loose the weight slowly, that way it'll stay off better.

I haven't been doing that much exercise but as soon as I get rid of this cold I'll be back on my bike and doing the shred again.

Happy fit February everyone :)

Vicky08 · 01/02/2012 21:04

Flojo you are NOT a failure, you simply had a moment of weakness but don't let that ruin all your good work. Get back on that wagon and take it a day at a time, some days it's really hard but you'll get there in the end.

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2012 21:04

Flojo
Not a failure - just somebody who has not sussed out what works yet.
Why were the bourbons in the house? Why were they still in the packet? Why had you prepared so many extra crumpets?
Serious questions. You need to think about WHY the ready to eat food is available and what mood you are in that makes you want to eat it.

Soap operas - never been my addiction I admit (except for the Archers)
can you find nothing to watch that makes you feel GOOD of an evening
or even turn the telly off, put some good music on and surf
www.darkroastedblend.com/
seems to keep DH amused for hours and hours !!

lisad123 · 01/02/2012 21:07

Another 2lb off Smile

Flojo1979 · 01/02/2012 21:09

Surfing is def the better option, I think I need to move away from the kitchen and take my laptop to bed and not go back downstairs! But I do love my soaps!

Flojo1979 · 01/02/2012 21:10

Well done Lisa that's fab!

Vicky08 · 01/02/2012 21:57

Excellent Lisad, you must feel great, well done.

putyourhatonsweetie · 01/02/2012 22:01

hello everyone.

welcome chooster. Atkins sounds horrible - I think our healthy approach on this thread is much more realistic long term.

hadn 't thought of it but yes that's great a whole month of being really healthy. 4.5 kilos gone (mostly at the beginning but at least have stuck to it) and plenty of inches

love the idea of fit february - lets do it. which makes me think about weekends, yes its easy for me living in a revoltingly sticky warm climate but was thinking about maybe each weekend in feb doing something really active with the family, a long walk, couple of swimming sessions, game of frisbee, just to challenge the pattern I guess.

well done everyone and again many thanks for helping keep me on the straight and narrow. Thanks

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 22:12

If your looking for something good to watch try comedy.
How I met your mother
Mike and Molly
There the 2 main ones I watch

Vicky thank you for providing that info

Fairenuff · 01/02/2012 22:14

Well done Lisa Smile.

Flojo do you like peppermint tea? No food tastes nice with peppermint but on it's own it's a lovely refresing drink. Could you watch your soaps on the laptop in bed with a cuppa? You just need to change some of your habits which you associate with eating and, sometimes, just a different location will do it.

Or you could suck on sugar free sweets or chewing gum. Best not to have anything really, but it might help to 'wean' you off the munchies Smile.

SparkySparrow · 01/02/2012 22:26

Well done lisa :)

Flojo You are not a failure! You just need to break the habits that cause you to pick at things. Watch your soaps with a fruit bowl in front of you, then if you feel the urge grab some fruit!
Don't buy things that you know are bad for you and are tempting. If you don't buy it, you can't eat it! I second the peppermint tea/chewing gum even brushing you teeth or have a mouthful of mouthwash. NOTHING tastes good with a minty after taste!
Good luck, and take one day at a time!

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 23:51

Well done Lisa!

Ok so I've just ate a bit extra. 1/4 naan with a bit of curry. I was very hungry and fruit just didn't hit the spot. Does that sound stupid? I think i cut my tea back too much

fazsaeed · 01/02/2012 23:54

Flojo that used to happen with me. I just swapped what i was eating.
I might have some fruit or special k snacks or velvet crisps ( they are delicious and 83cals!)

Fairenuff · 02/02/2012 08:31

Quavers are 88 calories and cheesy wotsits 95 so if anyone has 'cheese withdrawal' they are a fairly low calorie cheesy snack. But still empty calories.

I take a bag of sugarsnap peas to work and eat them instead of crisps. They have that satisfying crunch, are full of flavour, no salt and count as one of your five a day. A much better choice Smile.

Have a good day everyone x

fazsaeed · 02/02/2012 09:13

Oo im going to try the sugarsnap peas, sounds mmm. I have over 5 a day lol so not bothered about meeting the target.

Hathall · 02/02/2012 09:34

Flojo I'm another one who used to eat in front of the tv. Now I have a herbal tea.
It is a hard habit to break but go cold turkey for a few days and you'll soon get used to it. I don't even enjoy evening snacking anymore and refuse stuff that dh is munching on out of choice! I never thought I would be doing that.
It really is about breaking habits. Its not easy, but can be done.

Well done Lisa

I've planned another day similar to yesterday. I'm actually enjoying the food I've been eating. It feels so wholesome and I've not been hungry.

Breakfast was porridge, lunch is covent garden tomato soup with 1/2 can of chickpeas chucked in, dinner is a beanburger with steamed veg, yoghurt for dessert. Snacks are apple, satsuma, walkers baked crisps. That all comes at around 1000 cals.

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 10:30

Not having a good day :( .
Bloody hot water and heating has gone off! Couldn't have done it last week when it was relatively warm, no, it has to wait until its gets to -3 at night to do it Angry .
Waiting in for the gas man, I have no idea what time he's coming so if I miss him when I pick ds later its hot water bottle's and jumpers tonight! :(

Its taking all the flippin will power I have not to make myself a huge fry up!

Hathall · 02/02/2012 11:02

Oh noSparky! Thats awful. have you got heaters?
Have lots of hot drinks.

Hathall · 02/02/2012 11:08

Putyourhatonsweetie I've been thinking about your family weekend idea and I think its a brilliant idea. We might get snow this weekend but I'm just thinking of other things we could do. I think generally it will be nice to spend time doing stuff with family anyway. Even going to a museum involves walking.
If anyone has any ideas....

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 11:15

No heaters :( I'm sat here with 3 jumpers and a blanket! I'm actually starting to think it might be warmer outside!

As for family weekends, how about a walk round some woods. I take ds out sometimes as we are 5 mins Longlete, he loves stomping round in the leaves and finding different animals. We see quite a few deer at the moment :) .
Bike rides is another one. I'm currently trying to figure out how I can take ds on my bike with me. He's to old for the seats that go on the back and abit too young for those little bikes that you tow.

Hathall · 02/02/2012 12:02

Does your oven come on? Bake a cake and sit near the oven. I think you're probably burning loads of cals keeping warm and deserve some Smile

Hathall · 02/02/2012 12:03

We have woods near us and we don't live too far from Epping Forest so we could do that but I don't think I want to do that if it snows this weekend.

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 14:03

Mcdonalds for lunch Blush . Bloody lovely though Grin and it has made me feel slightly better.
I have just had argument on the phone with a woman about what time the gas man is going to be here. She said 3pm. Did she not hear me when I said I have a school run??? I asked her what happens if i miss him, she said you will have to phone us and make another appointment for tomorrow! So yes I was a bit rude (ashamed, I know its not really her fault) but my god its f*ing freezing! Surely it can't be legal to leave a 4yo in a house with no heating when its this cold? And it is also not my fault that everyone who could help me out is working today or otherwise busy! GRRRRRR!!
Apologies for venting!

Hope everyone is having a better day than I am!
