Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Vicky make some healthy snacks at home to take with you. Take some almonds or something like that. Or get yourself some low cal snacks like special k, velvet crisps.... Before you go!
Good luck

Hi guys, afraid I haven't been on for a couple of wks, after my measley half lb weight loss I kinda gave up for a while! Back on the wagon now tho!
This is wk 4 for me and so far this wk I'm doing ok. Evening munchies r a killer, just trying to keep busy.
I get my snacks from graze.com, if anyone wants a free box let me know and i'll post some voucher codes they always send with mine.
Just cancelled my ww membership as I cant be bothered don't have time, to track. And it clashes with body combat class which will be much more useful in losing weight!

TalkinPeace2 · 29/01/2012 15:58

((Flojo)) Never give up
one bad day does not define your life
cancelling WW - fairy nuff - but PLEASE keep doing the detailed food diaries - as that is what will help you take control
combat - YUP - too energetic for my knees but ever so good for you : how many times a week

snacks : sorry but as a comparative skinny I have a HUGE problem with the whole concept of snacks.
3 decent meals a day is ALL that your body will ever need. it's utter self indulgent bilge that you need to top up every hour or so.
Unless your BMI is under 20 and you are in athletics training.
If your BMI is over 22 you DO NOT NEED SNACKS

  • apart from a VERY FEW Type 1 diabetes patients - who are generally skinny as rakes due to knacked metabolism anyway

rant over
but please, think about it
if your body NEEDED the food, would it be storing it on your hips?

CupOfBrownJoy · 29/01/2012 16:15

If I want to snack in the evening, I have a bath and get an early night. You can't eat if you're asleep!!! Smile

SparkySparrow · 29/01/2012 17:10

Cup I do that too! Grin

SparkySparrow · 29/01/2012 17:18

Welcome back Flojo !
Try and keep on with a food diary, its a pain but it does help keep you on the straight and narrow!
As for evening munchies, stock up on fruit and make a huge fruit salad in the day. When you fancy something just go and grab a bowl, no effort as its already made and gives you something sweet.

Usual porridge (going to have to mix that up a bit, its getting boring!) , had a can if soup with crackers for lunch, dinner is pasta bake and hm garlic bread (I tried to contemplate leaving out the g bread, but I love it soooooooo much. Just one thick piece though!) .

Feel rubbish today, dh is getting on my nerves! Was shopping and actually stood in front of the bakery counter for 5mins Shock deciding what yummy treats to buy, and then snapped out of it and walked ran away. Sainsbos deffinatly thinks I'm a nutter now! Grin

CupOfBrownJoy · 29/01/2012 18:34

well done for resisting sparky!

I've been feeling rotten all day - really down and not in the mood for food at all. As a result I've had ham and scrambled eggs for breakfast and pasta with tomato sauce for dinner. Literally nothing else except tea all day.

The good part is I've lost another 1.5 pounds, making 4 so far this week. I MUST stop midweek weighing!!!

fazsaeed · 29/01/2012 18:40

I personally think that if you be too strict with your diet you will end up bingeing, if you allow the odd occasional treat and healthy snacks then it helps in the long run. That's how I feel about my diet nothing too extreme but not slacking off either
I had 1 biscuit before with a cuppa and I've just had salad for tea :)

Fairenuff · 29/01/2012 18:48

Sparky I do that sometimes! I stand and stare and maybe try to smell the baking. It fixes a need somehow. Doesn't actually make me want to buy it. I somehow just absorb the sugaryness without actually eating it. Yeah, sounds mad I know.

Actually, I just realised, smell is linked with taste so if I can smell chocolate, I can almost taste it iyswim Confused Grin.

I'm with TP on the snacking. I don't usually snack and try to put a good 5 hours between meals. So I eat at about 7.30am, 12.30pm, 5.30pm and bed at 10.30ish. If I feel hungry, I have a drink. It's very rare that my tummy rumbles so a lot of my 'hunger' is psychological.

TartyMcFarty · 29/01/2012 19:13

Hi folks. I've been away from the thread marking hundreds of exam papers over the last couple of weeks. Life's sort of been on hold while I've been doing it, but I want to get sorted and organised with the healthy living thing now I've finished. Too much to catch up on, so I've just read this page. Well done cup and hello again flojo. How's everyone been getting on?

CupOfBrownJoy · 29/01/2012 19:16

thanks Tarty, I can sympathise, although I haven't been doing exam papers.

At some point I'm going to have to sign for something and I'll end up doing a tick and writing "good" Smile

I hope everyone has a successful week....

TartyMcFarty · 29/01/2012 19:23

It's not all bed, it's external so I get paid for it.

Right. Tomorrow I'm going to have All Bran with a banana for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch and a chicken stir fry for tea. I have running club so will prob need a little extra cereal and fruit to top up energy levels beforehand. How's that for planning ahead?!

Vicky08 · 29/01/2012 19:48

Welcome back flojo and Tarty. I went to the cinema and had a couple of -handfuls- bits of popcorn. It's not that I need to snack in the cinema but it's a rare treat for DD and when we go one of the things ahe most loves is getting popcorn and if I don't eat any she's going to wonder why.

Apart from that I've had a good day, scrambled eggs and wholemeal toast for breakfast, roast chicken and grilled flat mushrooms for lunch and a lowfat yogurt and orange for dinner (it's all I fancied).

Today I've also done 30 mins cycling and the Shred which I actually quite enjoyed although my bum is already hurting!

Tomorrow's Monday and weigh in day.

CupOfBrownJoy · 29/01/2012 19:58

good luck for tomorrow Vicky

Tarty it sounds like you're in the zone...!

fazsaeed · 29/01/2012 20:02

That is probably just me then lol. I'm still kinda new to this, I have no snacks in the morning but I will have a snack after my tea. Today the cuppa was a one off. Grandparents were here and mother had made me 1.
But if I do snack it's under100 cals

CupOfBrownJoy · 30/01/2012 10:37

I snack! I'm hungry by break time in school - I have an apple and a rice cake usually. I'm not usually too bad in the afternoons, and if I'm hungry when I get home from work (5ish) I just have my dinner early.

putyourhatonsweetie · 30/01/2012 10:47

how are the monday weigh ins going? fingers crossed for all of you!

TartyMcFarty · 30/01/2012 13:06

My tuna salad was enormous - I included cheese and houmous but no bread and it came to 9 WW points. I psychologically 'need' carbs, but that was a lot of food and I feel full.

NewYearsRevolution · 30/01/2012 13:16

Hi all. Well done to everyone - especially those getting back on the wagon.

I've decided to spend this week doing something a friend swears by. Until the evening meal each day I am only eating eggs, milk, yoghurt and vegetables. You only do it for a two or three day of the week max, and there are no rules in the evening (other than 'eat sensibly' and no snacks after the meal). You can eat as much as you want of those things.

The idea is partly that it reduces your calorie count a bit for the week overall. But the main thing is to make you more aware of what you eat and why. There's no need to be hungry - think big omelettes, veg stir fry (spray of oil, soy sauce allowed!), soup, etc at lunch. Yoghurt or whatever for breakfast. You could add in lean protein if you wanted too. It's important not to add fruit because it's too easy to eat a lot of sugar if you use fruit to replace normal snacking.

I am finding that it is making me far more aware of all those times I think 'ooh, I'll just have an apple', or finish off DD1's crusts, or whatever. Food diaries just don't work for me - I forget to fill them in Blush. It also stops you snacking when you are out and about, as there is rarely a glass of milk or a hard boiled egg to hand! You are also meant to be getting used to the sensation of being genuinely hungry for your dinner in the evening - something I'm perhaps not as good at as I should be!

The friend does this for a few days whenever she thinks she needs to be more mindful of her eating - obv not intended for long term following as it would be too restrictive.

I'll see how it goes!

fazsaeed · 30/01/2012 13:43

Ive just had a tuna salad.
I said no to pizza last night :)
It smelt amazing though but nope nor for me

SparkySparrow · 30/01/2012 14:07

Weigh in today Confused .

lisad123 · 30/01/2012 14:16

well donre ladies, keep it up :)
Good luck Sparky

I made SW meatballs last night, they were yummy.
So far today I have had 2 boiled eggs with brown toast, chicken break and couscous with salad, and done 2 hours at the gym!

CupOfBrownJoy · 30/01/2012 15:12

Good luck Sparky!

Not such a good day today, I caved and had one of the kids' leftover vanilla puddings after lunch, and tonight I'm eating at PIL's so I won't have any control, although I'll say no thanks to bread or choc if its offered, and I'll drive so no wine for me....

I love SW meatballs lisad, yummy!

Fairenuff · 30/01/2012 17:08
