Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Hi there I have just seen a VERY disturbing picture of my self kindly posted on face book of me sat at the dinner table with obvious back fat, Im really gutted, I un-tagged my self. Sad
I think I'm going to go down the over eaters anon route, with an emphasis on planning meals and sticking to them, instead of starving then bingeing.
Really need to get back into excersizing, decided Ill do a week of re-organising eating habits, then cross trainer 3 time a week in gym, with cycling as it gets lighter in the eves.
Good luck, Im really looking forward to being healthy again. Smile

I'll join you!

We're going to ttc nexrt year and I'd love to lose some weight before then.

My method is simple and really works.

Log absolutely everything you eat
Always fill half your plate with veg/salad. Frozen veg is fine. i love green beans and sweetcorn.
Snack only on fruit and only 2 a day max
exercise at least 3 x a week
take a multi vit every day. Make sure you get plenty of vit d in winter as its possible that the lack of sunlight can cause low moods which may make people comfort eat. Its a theory which kinda makes sense to me.
drink lots of water

lisad123 · 28/12/2011 18:44

I will join you.
I have a good few stones to lose, and have rang the slimmers world lady about 10 mins ago!!
I have never been on a diet in my life and am so worried I will hate it Confused
I have found a slim photo of me to put on the fridge, or am I better to put the fat one on there??
I still have gym membership till march but can't afford it after that.
I swim on weekend and do badminton for 2 hours ona Sunday. I need to find another activity for mid week.

fivegomadindorset · 28/12/2011 18:45

Lisa I promise I am not stalking you but I am in.

SantieMaggie · 28/12/2011 18:49

i lost a load of weight with a similar approach to hathall - the only things i would add is check portion sizes (don't rely on packets as some tell you to use more) and make sure you get 2-3 portions of dairy a day.

i have to have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day and not go longer than 4 hours without eating.

i also try to go for low gi foods.

i need to get back on it in the new year but lost 11kg in a few months doing this

SantieMaggie · 28/12/2011 18:51

oh i snack on things like oatcakes or crackers not just fruit with maybe some cheese or yogurt

lisad123 · 28/12/2011 18:51

Lol fivegomad, it's fine Grin nice to have someone I "know" here. I'm worried i won't beable to stick to itBlush

lisad123 · 28/12/2011 18:53

Should add I'm not allowed fibre, too many green leafy veggies, baked beans, cheese, coffee, chewing gun and brown bread Sad

SparkySparrow · 28/12/2011 18:58

Can I join?
I could do with losing 2st. Have got my WW book at the ready but have never been on a 'diet'. I'm just going to try and eat 3 healthy meals a day and cut out all the crap! (There has been alot of crap recently Blush )

NotTheBlinkingGruffaloAgain · 28/12/2011 19:50

Looks like we're all pretty motivated- we can do it! Cant wait to hear everyone's stories Good luck everyone Smile

chocolatespiders · 28/12/2011 19:54

I would like to join you please, I have 3-4 stone to loseShock I lost 7 pounds before christmas with WW and will be back there this saturday to see the results of FOOD FOOD and more FOOD over christmas!!!!!! Sad

I love junk food and can eat and eat and eat without even thinking or feeling full up Sad

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 28/12/2011 19:55

I'm following Patrick holfords zest for life programme, so far I've lost a stone in just over 5 weeks. It's fab, I've also gone wheat/dairy free, not in the diet really but I think it's made a big difference and my sugar craving has reduced a lot too.

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 20:13

Low GI sounds like a good idea to me too, and Lisa, I really like your idea of the slim photo as a fat pic just seems a bit punishing and defeatist. I'm not sure where I'll find one though Blush

Junk food is my enemy. I think nothing of treating myself to a McD's breakfast (because I can count the points, even though it's a load of crap!!) or a bag of Rowntree's Randoms on the way back from the shop (how old am I - 9?!!) I hate the idea of DD picking up my bad habits.

Going to go for a pre-resolution run tomorrow to ease myself back in. Fitness is my thing!

OP posts:
SparkySparrow · 28/12/2011 20:24

Tarty I LOVE Randoms!!

Possibly a stupid question, but what is low GI and how is it good for you?

Hathall · 28/12/2011 20:29

I think its really sad how a lot of us are hooked on junk food. We try so hard to limit that kind of stuff to our children but don't think twice about putting it into our own bodies.
All we're doing is increasing our chances of becoming diabetic and getting heart disease.

It's hard but it's important we start eating healthy and nourishing food and taking better care of ourselves. Lecture over Smile

AngryFeet · 28/12/2011 20:35

ME ME ME!!!

I am feeling incredibly rubbish. 4 years ago I was the same weight as I am now. I spent a year losing 4.5 stone and felt/looked great. But being the great greedy pig I am I slowly gained back every ounce over 3 years :(

So I currently have a BMI of 34! Not good. Am 5ft 3 and weigh 13st 10.5. Would like to be 9st. Still don't know what diet to follow. Last time i just did calorie counting and lots of exercise. Was the best and easiest way but I need to get back on the wagon.

Help!

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 20:54

Received and understood, Hathall

Low glycaemic index (GI) foods release their energy slowly and as such, help to control insulin (excuse lame science here!) - I have PCOS, so insulin resistance is an issue for me. Wholegrains, some fruit and most veg are included. Potatoes, parsnips, broad beans and things like that aren't though. It also tends to be the case that refined carbs like white bread, rice and pasta are high GI - I really notice this with pasta as I feel hungry soon after eating it.

Really looking forward to taking this on properly!

OP posts:
SantieMaggie · 28/12/2011 21:00

PCOS here too Tarty hence the low GI - its the only thing thats worked for me properly and I've tried everything! I don't go overboard on checking the GI of everything I just make sure that I eat carbs with protein (as it tends to lower the GI) and make sure I choose low GI options in bread, basmati rice, etc.

Nairns also do some yummy low GI ginger biscuits :)

Before I had the insulin thing explained to me I honestly thought I was really greedy because I would be really hungry after say a big chinese or italian meal but its because your body is telling you you're hungry as its not processing the carbs as food/energy.

lisad123 · 28/12/2011 21:03

my bmi is 32, which is classed as obese :( I only weigh 12 stones but im a short arse.
Im not hooked on much other than bicuits and chocolate Confused
Im happy with fish and veg, not keen on crisps and cheese ect.

SparkySparrow · 28/12/2011 21:12

Last time I stepped on the scales I was 12st and that was about a month before Xmas.My comfortable weight is 10st, which is what i would like to aim for but in a ideal world would like to be 9. I have'nt dare'nt step on there since what with all the Xmas munch Confused . Will do it on the 1st! Which is when I am going to be good! And I AM!!!!

Thanks for the info on GI! :)

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 22:20

OK, the 1st it is: an instant test for my resolve!

OP posts:
DistantShip · 29/12/2011 14:21

Me too please Wink

Plan to restart the Idiot Proof Diet on 2 Jan having lost a few kilos during Nov and Dec. Also using MFP to track progress.

Probably 77kg post Xmas carb-fest and as short arse this is not good ..... Target to be 70kg by DH birthday in March. Knee injury means I'm limited to low impact activities for the moment so roll on the patronising moo leslie sansone DVDs until I'm fit enough to shred.
