January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

Hazie go out and run. Pretend every foot on the ground is a fu back at dh.

No run tonight, rest day, but been for a 2.5mile walk, feeling righteous. And yes, mil is still here. Wink

Kewcumber · 05/01/2012 22:14

so I'm supposed to be doing W1R1 tomorrow though and trying to sort the house out for a viewing (I'm selling) so its touch and go but...

what do I wear - its freezing - don;t own pair of shorts, don;t have a suitable jacket but have tshirts and fleeces and jogging bottoms or leggings. I guess for W1R1 its more important that you just get out and have a go right?

Do I care how much of an idiot I look on the Thames towpath?

An very very nervous about my achilles tendon. Ah well - no pain no gain (or is no pain, no pain a better philosophy?)

FreeButtonBee · 05/01/2012 22:41

kew

Wear a good bra, t-shirt, fleece (but not your heaviest one), hat if you have one as the wind is horrible at the moment, maybe do joggers this time and see how you get on. I like tighter trousers but personal choice really. Good socks and just go for it. There are all sorts running in SW4 at the mo, imagine thames is similar. No one cares, partic in london i find as there is always some mad old lady training for her 5,000,000 marathon going at 2 mph!

rusmum · 05/01/2012 22:55

i am soo tempted to join but SCARED!!!! i cant run upstairs!

LookMaOneHand · 05/01/2012 23:57

Don't be scared, rusmum - it has "couch" in the name! It's designed for people who can't run upstairs!

C'mon - you know you want to!

:)

ScienceGeekMum · 06/01/2012 03:47

Join us rusmum, I was scared too and thought I'd die after run 1. But actually enjoyed run 3 which I never thought I'd say! I've also lost 2kg this week with running and cutting out junk Smile

Plus most of it is walking and a very slow jog at the moment!

ScienceGeekMum · 06/01/2012 03:54

Kew my kit for running in Woking is a pair of track suit bottoms, sports bra, baggy tshirt, bright red hoodie, wolly hat, socks and trainers. It warms up fairly quickly when your exercising! Leggings might be preferable to prevent bottoms of joggers getting wet in puddles.

No one gives you a second glance - even me with my hypnotically wobbling bits!

ScienceGeekMum · 06/01/2012 03:55

Sorry when you're exercising

debka · 06/01/2012 06:22

geekmum where are you that you normally post at 3am??? Or are you a night bird?!

Looking forward to W2R1 tonight, it won't kill me, will it? Grin

thestringcheesemassacre · 06/01/2012 06:29

Morning all!
Run 2 W3 complete. Had to go at 5.45am as DH had insanely early meeting at work. Was hard but I made it,
Well done geekmum on weight loss.

Good luck today everyone

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2012 07:27

Kewcumber I wear t-shirt and hoodie on top and dh joggers as I don't own a pair, lucky he has short legs! Was cold last night for 5 min warm up but after was too hot! And trainers of course, haven't found I needed any special bra, my everyday ones have been fine.

Go sciencegeekmum on weight loss, mine is steady but does seem to have sped up since starting running :)

Join us rusmum! I walk a reasonable amount but otherwise do nothing and I've managed it.

ScienceGeekMum · 06/01/2012 09:16

Debka wish I was somewhere exotic instead of Woking! It's the wonders of having a 4mo. I'm still bfing him on demand, he hasn't quite settled into a structure overnight Sad Makes running a good escape though! Grin

ScienceGeekMum · 06/01/2012 09:17

Impressed at thestring's efforts this morning! Shock

VelmaKelly · 06/01/2012 09:31

Does anyone else find they hit a hill just as that pice says "start running"?!

VelmaKelly · 06/01/2012 09:38

Voice. Not pice Blush

NoseyNooNoo · 06/01/2012 10:05

Just done Wk1 R2 - Felt easier than the first one. Feeling good about it. Might go and buy some running gear now.

Wonder if my MP3 will ever appear.

Rusmum - you can do it! I'm out of breath running up the stairs too. It is really gentle and if it's too much I think it would be enough to just walk it. The key is just to keep moving.

thederkinsdame · 06/01/2012 11:41

rest day today and I am feeling really grumpy. That's the third rest day (of 4) I have felt annoyed that it is not a running day. !

Cluckingmad · 06/01/2012 11:49

Hi can I join? I did wk1 run1 last night and loved it, although 5k is further than what I thought. It felt great to be out in the fresh air and am looking forward to the next run now.

OneLieIn · 06/01/2012 12:06

W2r1 urggggggghhhhh

Lessons learnt:

  1. Never ever run go out on just a berocca and a cup of tea
  2. Don't walk 2 miles the night before a run
  3. Always make the last bit downhill (by chance today rather than design)

Phew, done.

derkin i walk on my days off, but should rest!

openyerlugholes · 06/01/2012 12:16

Need your opinions please. Am due to do wk1 d3 in about 15 minutes...

I'm finding it far too easy though, maybe because I used to run 9miles at a time. Do you think I should switch to wk2 from today, which is 1.5 min running instead of 1min?

Answers on a postcard please within the next 15 minutes. Ta!

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2012 12:27

Why not openyerlugholes, what's the worst that can happen? I couldn't say I'm finding it easy so can't really compare. I am not dying which I thought I might be!

openyerlugholes · 06/01/2012 12:34

Thanks cinnamon. Am off so will let you know if I live Grin

ohbugrit · 06/01/2012 12:40

I'd follow the plan but increase your pace, open.

NoseyNooNoo · 06/01/2012 13:03

Since my run this morning I went to buy some kit. I wanted 2 t-shirts, a bra and a wind-cheater type thing and discovered that running shops are designed to make you feel fat.

I went for the bra first. I have myself measured regularly and wear a 36C - well that size I could barely close and when I did I couldn't move. I had to increase it to a 36DD.

I then tried on 6 t-shirts. As a size 14 with a healthy BMI I thought a Medium would suffice. No chance. I just squeezed into a Large in 2 of them.

Then I went for the windcheater. Well, I had to be scraped off the floor when I saw that most of them were c.£90!!!! I couldn't even get into the Large. The assistant who was trying her best said that it was because of my 'gorgeous bust'. No one has ever commented on the volume of my bust before. In the end I had to go for a Medium man's version which was the same colour/brand etc just half the price.

So I think I spent about £150 for stuff I don't like but it was al that fitted. Bless her, the assistant said I was bound to lose weight over the next few weeks and perhaps I should pop in then...

Panadbois · 06/01/2012 13:25

Wow! You lot don't hang about do you! (putting me to shame)

DS is home from hospital this morning, so I could be back on the road again tomorrow Smile

I might start over, see how I go with r3 first. Not feeling 100% myself today, so I'm not going to stress about it too much.

I'll try to catch up soon, I promise!
