January couch to 5k - who's with me?

Santageekmum · 26/12/2011 11:59

I am massively overweight and have never run before but am planning on starting the nhs couch to 5k plan in January (first Thursday in fact).

Who would like to don their trainers and join me?

Also if anyone has a good sports bra to recommend, I'm bf and a 40dd at the moment and need a new one for running.

I am now running for 25 mins but VERY S-L-O-W-L-Y.
Not sure if this is helpful but I kept failing to get past about week 3 as the running bits made my heart really bang and I wasn't recovered in time for the next running bit. Thought it was hopeless. Then a runner friend took me out ( much to my complete horror) and showed me how to really go slowly - just faster than a walk - and I 'ran' for 10 mins. Also - do it on the flat!

Ripitup I wasn't planning on going very fast! Will bear that in mind for week 3 though, thanks.

I'm in.

I've lost 2.5st on SW since October, still got at least 8st to go Shock but I really want to start running. Something I've never done before but I long to- I walk quite a lot but this would be another level.

I've got to small DCs so I'll prob be going out after they're in bed too.

I don't have an MP3 or anything fancy to listen with though, I'll have to see if I can borrow something from my sister. Would an ipod do? I also need trainers and something to wear!

Debka, if you walk a lot you are halfway there!

Is a good time to start as you should be able to get clothes ans shoes in the sales. My one piece of advice would be to invest in the most expensive running shoes you can afford (discounted in the sales of course). Don't scrimp on quality because you will need it.

Same applies to a sports bra. Any old leggings and t-shirt will do on the other hand.

Am very tempted to start today - it is such a lovely morning.

Debka well done on your weight loss so far! Definitely you can walk or run. An iPod is ideal, just download the nhs c25k podcasts onto it, there's a link up thread. Welcome to the team!

Open I'm going to try and convince DH to take me shopping this week, we have a sweatshop in my town so hopefully they can give me advice on shoes. If you go today let us know how it goes!

We have nike and adidas outlets by us which are brilliant. I'm all kitted out so really no need to buy anything, but it's tempting to go have a nose at what is there.

Will do geekmum. Am going to download the bb app today. And will go hunt out my mp3 player, though can't remember where I put it!

hello, another graduatefrom last year here, I started last Jan, finished in May and did it again in Sept/Oct to improve speed. I used an ipod shuffle, just downloaded one week at a time onto it. For those asking about trainers, especially if you are overweight or with any previous injuries, I really would recommend going to a running shop and getting your gait analysed for running shoes, it will cost more, £70+, but shoes vary a lot and decent ones make a huge difference. I started c25k in old trainers and suffered a knee injury about halfway through, when it was better I was fitted properly for running shoes and my knee has been fine (I'm stlll 2 st overweight). Good luck with it everyone, hood to see so many people planning to start.

I may have to invest in an ipod...

Hey thanks guys

I can't afford £70 on shoes, I just can't, does anyone have any suggestions of where I can get cheaper shoes? there's an outlet centre near us which has adidas and nike and all the rest shops, would that be a good place to start?

Report
openyerlugholes · 27/12/2011 09:29

Yes, go to the outlet store. Get shoes specifically designed for running. Go for the best ones you can.

They will do you well for the couch to 5k. If you get the bug and want to take it further you will need to seriously consider getting fitted out to avoid injury in the future. But good running shoes from an outlet should do you when you are starting out. IM(very humble)O.

I did my first run this morning! Downloaded the podcast last night, put a variety of layers on (gym top, long sleeved tshirt, DH waterproof jacket) and just went for it.
I'm running in old hi-tec trainers, might try and get some better ones in the sales.

Anyway, after getting home and a nice hot shower I really think I can do this. Do I eat all the left over Xmas junk food in the house is the question though? Running fuel perhaps? Xmas Grin

ohbugrit · 27/12/2011 10:23

Well done delilah! Of course you can do it - virtually anyone can do c25k, if they want to. Feels great doesn't it?

Maybe we passed in the street this morning (I was the one in the oversized orange jacket clashing impressively with my purple face) Grin

Well done Delilah! Great to know we can survive the first run! When are you going to go again?

Welcome Emmac

Ohbugrit I have great visions of you now! Well done to you for getting out there as well!

I'm still keeping to my original start date so have a week to source new trainers, might try to see if we have any outlets near us as well. And yes I am counting the junk food as fuel!
