GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Saker you've probably said this elsewhere but which GL book(s) are you using?

Saker · 01/02/2006 22:36

Patrick Holford - there's a general book and a GL cookbook. Tbh you could do most of it with the cookbook - the other book has the theory which is quite interesting and some recipes also. I still have the cookbook from the library, I suppose I should buy it at some point.

On Patrick Holford's GL diet you are supposed to stick to 40GLs a day - 10 for each meal and 5 for each of 2 snacks. You are allowed 5 extra for desserts and drinks. It is quite a low carbohydrate allowance and in fact if you follow all his rules a very low amount of protein also but I just ignore that. I don't count calories at all and don't worry too much about fat (within reason, so I have gone back to eating nice sausages instead of those awful low fat ones and full fat hummous because that has a lovely low GL value ). The surprising thing is how high GL some low GI foods are e.g. 1 small apple is 5GL so gone are the days when I had two apples for dessert. New potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots are all allowed but take up most of your allowance for a meal. But you can eat plenty of nuts and seeds and I have started eating things like quinoa which I hadn't really had before.

Sorry you didn't really ask to know all that. Tbh I don't know whether it is working any more effectively for me than the GI diet. In the first two weeks I lost 6lbs but then I went away for the weekend and managed to gain 3lbs and I only lost 1lb this week so it's hard to say whether that is much different than if I had been on the GI diet.

Am very pleased thus far

Saker · 07/02/2006 10:39

Well done everyone. I lost a grand total of ...
1/2lb this week. I suppose it's heading in the right direction although you can breathe out and put on 1/2lb .

franch · 07/02/2006 11:35

thanks puff Well done piffle, and saker - slow but steady, that's us

melbob · 07/02/2006 20:14

Yesterday I had put on 4lbs having been losing 2 on Sat am. Today I am 2 less so have put on 2. How I have done that i don't know but am blaming PMS

puff · 08/02/2006 15:48

Well done Piffle and Saker.

Melbob - how are you finding the lower carbs regime?

I bought Audrey Eyton's F2 Diet at the weekend - it was half price. She did the v successful F Plan Diet in the 70's. There's plenty of low GI ideas in there.

I'll post a couple of recipes on the recipe thread later.

OP posts:

sounds interesting puff.

Helen Foster's Weekend-Off Diet was on the Book People website for £2.99 so thought I might as well get it - mostly for the recipes - seems quite good

melbob · 10/02/2006 20:16

Hi

The lower carbs help I am struggling some days to keep as low as 50g but have cut down hugely and its helping

puff · 11/02/2006 11:31

That's good melbob, I don't think it matters too much iif you can't keep to 50 as that is very low, but if keeping a strict eye on the carbs is working then great.

I won't be online for the next week, so good luck everyone .

gf do you still need ideas or am I too late? Did AWT's spicy chicken last night which was nice - needs to marinate overnight tho.

Well I've lost another pound this week - so that's 12.5 since end Nov, 4.5 to go Feeling very good as I didn't feel at all deprived this week - had lots of home-made low GI treats (muffins etc) and even had an 'off day' when I had no choice but to eat pizza and extremely gooey choc cake (altho I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the latter )

Slow and steady is definitely the way to go.

Hope everyone else had good news on the scales this morning (or whenever)

melbob · 13/02/2006 19:37

Well done every one

I lost 2lb so thats got rid of the 4 that I mysteriously gained.

Saker · 14/02/2006 21:01

Well done everyone, seems to have been a good week. I lost 1.5lbs which I was happy with especially as I went out for a big meal on Sat night.

franch · 15/02/2006 16:44

Well done saker & melbob!

melbob · 20/02/2006 19:16

Stayed the same anyone else?

Saker · 21/02/2006 10:40

It's very quiet this week - is that a bad sign ? . I expect you'll get a good loss next week Melbob.

I lost 1lb this week. I have been exercising a bit more and at a higher intensity than usual so I hope that helped. Although actually because it was half term I didn't have all the walking up and down to school so it probably evened out.
