GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Well done on your weight loss so far sweetmummy - glad you have been inspired .

Didn't see your request for a bean salad recipe until now.

This is for Tuna and mixed bean salad, but I've done it without the tuna and it still tastes good.

2 tblspns olive oil
1tblspn lemon juice
1 tblspn water
1 tspn tomato puree
1 tspn soy sauce
1 400g can mixed beans, drained & rinsed
1 200g can tuna in spring water, drained
half a small red onion, chopped
8cm or so piece of cucumber, chopped

Put olive oil, lemon juice, water, tomato puree, soy sauce in a salad bowl and mix with a fork. Mix in the beans, onion, cucumber and tuna.

Thanks so much for the recipe-sounds delicious with tuna....

Saker · 29/01/2006 23:01

Sweetmummy - I posted a couple of bean recipes on the recipe thread.

prettybird · 30/01/2006 09:05

Still 10st 8lb this morning

This is despite a heavy weekend, with a dinner party on Saturday night, with a dessert that involved clotted cream, sugar and whisky (plus some healthy reapsberries and oats) , and plenty of wine .

So pleased I didn't do too much damage!

Only two pounds to go before next Thursday!

puff · 30/01/2006 15:22

Well done prettybird!

I have stayed the same this week, not surprised as I've eaten quite a lot - the cold weather is making me ravenous. it's fine though, hopefully I'll lose next week.

Thanks Saker, I only have the green book. Could you post the wholemeal scones recipe and the chicken with garlic and lemon?

Well, I lost a mighty 0.5lb this week Still going in the right direction I guess. 10lb lost, 7lb still to lose. Am back in my old jeans which is a good feeling (despite the flab hanging over the waistband), and have had some positive comments recently so something obviously is happening.

melbob · 30/01/2006 19:36

Stayed the same again not sure why?

Saker · 31/01/2006 09:38

Well done everyone this week for losing / maintaining. I lost 1lb which is alright normally but is a bit disappointing as I was hoping to have lost the 3lbs I managed to put on last weekend.

I will post those recipes Franch.

sweetmummy · 31/01/2006 22:47

SAKER-I AM SORRY- i didn't see them earlier-thanks a lot-i will for sure try them! After all day at work it is so nice to be back. It is realy difficult week for me and i am realy tempted-but trying to resist to any sugary thing...o my cheesecake-I ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT...

puff · 31/01/2006 22:50

Still a loss Saker - well done.

I really could be losing more if I put my mond to it, but am enjoying my grub too much at the mo! I'm quite happy as its still going in the right direction.

Melbob - I don't know what to suggest - maybe adapt to the GL approach Saker is using?

well done everyone.

Have bought "The healthy Low GI Low Carb Diet" book which has some ok receipes. Interesting it says you ned to restrict carb intake to 40-50g a day(ie less than 2 slices of bread)

had AWT barley risooto wuth chorizo - v nice.

puff · 31/01/2006 23:39

gosh, that is low on the carbs

In theory on the GL diet you can have bread but it is only supposed to weigh 35g a slice (which is nothing) and be rye and pumpernickel which I can't find anywhere. So I have more or less given up bread for the time being. Thank the Lord for Nairn's oatcakes .

No worries Sweetmummy. I have a recipe for low GL cheesecake I can post if you like. I haven't tried it yet though so I don't know whether it's any good or not. I might make it today if I get round to it. I also have recipes for apple and almond cake (which I have tried and it is acceptable though not as nice as proper cake) and carrot cake which I haven't tried yet.

Saker · 01/02/2006 09:29

That's really good news Grumpy and well done on the weight loss too.

Misspiggy · 01/02/2006 10:27

Saker - they do pumpernickel bread in Lidl and you should be able to get rye bread in Tesco (Finest range). Personally, I found that the pumpernickel bread was really carboardy so I go for the rye bread instead which is delish! HTH

Saker · 01/02/2006 12:05

Thanks MissPiggy. I'll look out for it. Often though when you look at the label it has a lot of normal flour in it and then I'm not sure what the GI/GL is.

Misspiggy · 01/02/2006 14:09

No problem Tesco label their own brand items with low/medium GI ratings but I'm not sure how reliable this is though.

Piffle · 01/02/2006 14:30

Toasted rye bread is really nice under a poached egg, or under a load of salad and smoked salmon
I've found the further I get into the GI lifestyle, the less I want or need bread of any kind.
Have hit an absolute plateau now though and wonder if getting that last couple of kgs off is going to take twice as long as the 1st 3 kg?
I've cranked up the exercise a bit and given the meals a serious makeover, see if a couple of weeks of stringent eating will shift some more!

franch · 01/02/2006 17:08

Saker thanks so much for the recipes, they look great

I need to sort out my snacking. I can be pretty disciplined at mealtimes but seem to be starting to go berserk in the afternoons and evenings. The moment the babies go down I'm foraging in the kitchen. This afternoon I had 2 bowls of porridge and then sunk to an all-time low and bought a Creme Egg at the shops It's all psychological - I'm a genius at justifying things even when I'm not even hungry. In spite of the Creme Egg I'm doing pretty well at avoiding 'red-light' foods, but know no moderation when it comes to the low-GI foods I really love - oatcakes, porridge, rye bread, beans etc.

Breastfeeding makes it all the harder to be strict - my appetite's huge and I'm forever saying to myself 'Well, I'm allowed this, I'm breastfeeding!'

I'm starting to bake low-GI stuff which should help - if I was really organised I'd PLAN my snacks in advance but I really can't get that anal ...

Saker · 01/02/2006 19:56

I have to say that so far on the GL diet I have had far fewer cravings and real feelings of hunger than I did on the GI diet. I do get hungry towards mealtimes but it isn't the same uncontrolled feeling that leads me to eating anything and everything. Also because what you are allowed is limited it is easier to draw boundaries - one more apple or another bowl of porridge is not allowed whereas on the GI diet you can sort of justify it.

Piffle, part of the reason I am trying the GL diet is that I also got a bit stuck on the GI diet towards the end. I want to shift around 10 lbs more or so but couldn't seem to move below a certain point. I suppose it is always harder to lose that last bit. My dh lost a similar amount of weight to me when we started the GI diet together and got down to where he wanted, but apart from a couple of beers at the weekends he isn't really eating that differently to how he was and his weight has stayed the same for months. It's like your body adapts so the diet has become maintenance.
