GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Changes in routine are always a bit disruptive to my diet I find.

Stick with it franch - you are doing really well.

I've had a pretty good few days - hoping for a positive result on Mon. I know I've lost anything I put on over Xmas - it feels good to be in control .

I've realised that controlling my weight takes effort - the days when I could eat whatever I wanted are long gone , but it's ok and the rewards in terms of health are worth it.

How is everyone else doing?

Thanks puff Fingers crossed for Monday

melbob · 07/01/2006 19:33

Hi agree with you about changes to routine this week has been odd but am glad to be back on Gi veg enchilladas for dinner tonight yum yum

Weighed myself this am and had put on 5lbs since Thurs!! I know it can't be true but its not helpful anyway its only Monday's that count

sarochka · 08/01/2006 09:21

Hi everyone
Well since Tuesday Ifeel much better - I am deffo not so bloated! Have cut out bread ( find this really hard) and have cut down the caffeine but am getting those dreadful headaches half way through the day instead. Shall post results tomorrow. Hope everyone else is fine.

MrsDoolittle · 08/01/2006 14:17

Hiya Ladies
Can I join in too?
I'm 36 weeks pregnant second time around and I feel awful. I haven't weighed myself but I feel like I have put on sooo much weight, I'm outgrowing my maternity clothes.
I like to start the GI diet now. I have Gallop's family GI book and I'm inspired.
I need to sit down and sort a shopping list now.

I am worried about using skimmed milk though, at this point. Do you think I should stick to full-fat milk for the time being?

Puff, that is seriously impressive weight loss!!

franch · 08/01/2006 14:32

I was thinking about getting the Family GI book Mrs D - I'm breastfeeding (have baby + toddler) - would you recommend it? How does it differ from his first book do you know?

Skimmed milk is fine during pregnancy - I've always used it and carried on during both of mine (as recommended by my GP) - the important thing is it's got more calcium than full fat (see e.g. this article ).

MrsDoolittle · 08/01/2006 17:57

I didn't realise that about skimmed milk Franch - Thanks

I haven't read the first GI book so I wouldn't know. I have thought about it before but not until have I actually made an effort to do anything about it.
I'm thinking about what to take to luch for work tomorrow.

Piffle · 09/01/2006 14:02

there was a theory about calcium in the Times Gi articles yesterday that as calcium needs fat for it to be absorbed it actually will take fat out of your stores in order to do so.
Not sure if its total BS or not though
I drink sod all milk and use half fat dairy products pretty sparingly too.... I also take a good multi vitamin. to be sure
Am drinking lots of hot water and lemon and finding the afternoon slump does not happen now after getting back on track after xmas.
Mmmmmm really enjoying it a so many of the things are more widely available now

puff · 09/01/2006 14:52

Welcome MrsD

My scales aren't working (think new battery needed), so will weigh tomorrow when I have a replacement.

Did anyone get The Times yesterday with the GI diet thing in it? Just wondering if there are any new recipes to add to my repertoire!

franch · 09/01/2006 15:03

Hi all, no change for me this week - was hoping for 1lb but I know the reasons: been sticking mainly to low-GI foods, but very lax on the portion size front, and also have been straying into yellow-light territory as justified by books other than Rick Gallop. I knew I should stick to him, as recommended by you puff! I did have one or two red-light treats this week too. Well, at least I didn't put anything on. Am starting afresh this week ...... god, a week seems like a long time though sometimes doesn't it?

puff · 09/01/2006 15:06

franch, staying the same is fine - you know why which is the most impt thing.

OP posts:
franch · 09/01/2006 16:13

Thanks puff

Saker · 09/01/2006 18:49

Hello

I haven't weighed today as I started properly on Tuesday last week. Will let you know tomorrow .

I can't believe I've been a whole week without caffeine now and I'm still functioning!

welcome MrsD.

melbob · 09/01/2006 19:09

I weighed and stayed the same. Bit of a funny week so no matter will keep on.

Sunday times not really got new recipes but handy booklet of principles for those who don't know them

sarochka · 09/01/2006 19:46

hi everyone - well lost 1lb but was hoping for more - I am not great for sticking to things but am doing quite well am going to up my effort this week and hope for better things. I was sorting out loads of magazines and stuff today and I have that many slimming this n that I should weight next to nothing!! Anyone else find this too ?

MrsDoolittle · 09/01/2006 20:57

Hi Ladies,
I'm 34 weeks pregnant so I'm not sure that I should be looking for weight loss, although I really don't want to out on anymore. I really feel like I am heaving around now.
I thought I should start it before Number 2 is born, so that I don't get distracted.
I have the Sunday Times supplement and I have found it not to be as strict as Gallops.
Happy eating!!

puff · 09/01/2006 21:42

Well done sarotchka.

Melbob - as I always say, staying the same means we are still in control .

MrsD - even if you are not trying to lose weight, the GI principles are basically about healthy eating, there's nothing faddy, so good during pregnancy I'd have thought.

Just thought I'd mention that Lloyds Chemists are offering two of The Food Doctor Diet books for £4.99 (a saving of £21). I've bought them, because he is advocating a very similar approach to the GI Diet and some of the snack and meal ideas are good. A fiver for both of them is a bargain!

I know puff. It's just that without weighing myslef I don't know if it's working.

Ho hum

lunavix · 09/01/2006 22:07

-waves at MrsD-

I'm in a similar spot to MrsD, I'm pregnant (although only 7 weeks!) and I've already put on 8 pounds due to rather hefty morning sickness/nausea (I can only stomach bland high calorie food) and comfort eating.

I started out at 9st pre-ds, put on FIVE stone with him and am determined not to let that happen again. Unfortunately, I put on weight on holiday in October (went up to 10st) and didn't lose it before becoming pg in November. And add that 8pounds on and I'm already nearly 2 st up!

I lost my post-ds weight (2st) being quite regimented with weightwatchers, but I know you can't do WW when pg. Is GI suitable? And can someone please explain it to me or point me in the right direction of some information?

puff · 10/01/2006 10:52

Lunavix, I think as long as you dont do GI with weight loss in mind, it will be good, because its such a healthy eating programme.

Rick Gallop has just published a book called "The Family GI Diet" - apparently this takes into account doing GI during pregnancy, so this is probably the best bet for you and MrsD.

OP posts:
puff · 10/01/2006 10:54

ps - lost 1.5lbs this week.

OP posts:
butty · 10/01/2006 10:57

Well this is it, i have lost a staggering 2.5 1bs!!!!!!!!
I was hoping that i would lose more than that, but i had a naughty night last night and i feel as though it has hindered my weigh in this morning!!!!!!!!!!
You never know, next week could be better!!!!

Butty.xxx

MrsDoolittle · 10/01/2006 10:58

Well exactly puff!
I had All-bran for breakfast, a banana as a mid-morning snack, cottage cheese, diced apple and flaked almonds for lunch.
A few csahew nuts and a braeburn apple for mid-afternoon.
Then when dh came home he wanted sausages and mash for dinner. I promised him I wasn't going to take this diet too seriously...
So I had two Tesco finest sausi's, a small helping of mash, lots of peas and carrots, then an apple.

Not great but not tooo bad either!!!

Better than all the chocolate and biscuits I've been troughing over Christmas!

puff · 10/01/2006 10:59

butty - that is excellent - well done.

Just realised that the books I mentioned have already been mentioned by you earlier in the thread !

OP posts:
butty · 10/01/2006 10:59

Puff,

that was the book offer that i was mentioning last week and i have followed it quite sternly although i have not done the 7 day starter plan!!!!!!
I am totally hooked, keep on reading every spare second just to remind me why i am doing it as he makes some very valid and useful points!!!
