GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Good for you melbob

hey guys

melbob - don't worry bout the scales too much, just go by how you feel, and how your clothes fit. weigh yourself once a week and then try not to think bout it (easier said than done i know), when i switched to digital scales i was suddnely half stone heavier but just start a fresh - bad week last week seemed to put on some weight but then it suddenyl dissappeared again... the body works in mysterious ways hey!

PUFF - DON'T GIVE UP!!!!! PLEASE!!! got so excited when i saw your doing food doctor, but please stick with it will be soooo worth it! i've been doing it since 28th dec and have lost 9 pounds, the first week is really hard, i had one day where i felt like i had the worst hangover in the world, but thats normal. and please don't increase the portion sizes, that will slow everything down - i know you'll feel hungry fo a few days, but it gets better, you are eating enough to survive i promise. he does advise doing as little as possible during detox, not exercising. try eating off a smaller plate, use a teaspoon - makes you eat slower - i found that helped. stick with it!!! you go girl!
been on it 3 weeks and i feel great! dropped a dress size (though i still have a few to go) maybe we could help each other along!? i don't know anyone else on it. if you have any other probs let me know, i may have found a solution already, be happy to help!

good luck
xx

Hi poppet - I love the recipes in the rest of the book, I just don't think I needed to do that really strict first week as I've been doing healthy GI for a long time now.

I'm not sure I've lost any weight this week - it was a bit disrupted - will see tomorrow.

OP posts:
puff · 15/01/2006 20:05

Well done on your weight loss btw !

jstbcs · 15/01/2006 20:53

HAVE BENN DOING ATKINS... BUT ITS SO RESTRICTIVE oops had caps on, baby on lap, hard to type...

so, convert me to GI, what book should i buy?

puff · 15/01/2006 21:14

There's a few new ones come out recently jstbcs - WH Smiths has a big diplay of various GI books at the mo.

My favourites are Easy GI Diet by Helen Foster and GI Diet by Anthony Worral Thompson.

puff - you seem to be up on the whole gi thing!? have you managed to lose a lot of weight then? how many books have you tried? the detox can still do you alot of good, havn't read that many myself, but alot of them don't really know much about the science behind it do they, though it worked for them. what a ball park!!! how many blinkin diets there are could take years to find the right one! how many kids have you got? you fightin the baby bulge or just trying to get back to your old self?

jstbcs - will be a very big change from atkins, the first few weeks will be hard but stick with it, you'll get there. you just need to skim them in the bookshop and find the one that will fit your lifestyle the best. look at how easy the recipes look, what type of foods they tend to focus on, though the principals are the same in general. the key really is to understand the theory behind it! i'm on the food doctor diet, and now i've got to grips with the principals (taken three weeks) i can eat anywhere, been out to restaurants a few times, even had an indian, and still lost weight. from a professional point of view i decided it was the best to follow, he has fantastic qualifications, i am a big fan of the guy who trained him. how long were you on atkins, and how much success did you actually have? never been able to get my head round it, just seems physiologically so unhealthy. goo dluck whatever you decide!!!

Saker · 15/01/2006 22:42

Melbob - good for you about new start tomorrow. You did have some funny results on your old scales, like putting on 5lbs overnight etc so maybe they have been playing up and it will be easier to see a steady weight loss now.

Hello to everyone else. Come and join us! I'm actually trying the GL diet at the moment, I was doing GI before. They are quite similar but GL takes GI to it's logical conclusion which is if you eat a lot of low GI foods at once it adds up to the same as a high GI food so you have to be more careful about how much you eat in one go.

jstbcs · 16/01/2006 08:20

poppet - i only did two weeks on atkins, and i wasnt stickign to it! I was eating low carb bars and nuts and diet coke by the bucket load.... tut tut... have done atkins before and lost 2 st really quickly (inabout 2 months) however since i've had the kids I cant seem to stick to it, guess cos i am cooking a lot. I need a lifestyle, one that can fit in with 2 children adn a dh!

puff · 16/01/2006 09:56

poppet, I've lost 7 stones over 18 months.

I have a few GI Diet books, mainly because I think you need variety when dieting over a long period of time.

I've stayed the same this week. It may be because I have been quite constipated throughout the week - I've been eating more nuts and eggs and these tend to bung me up !

Anyway, I'm back to my usual routine this week, but will certainly incorporate some of the Food Doctor recipes in my meals, even if trying to follow his strict week one wasn't too successful for me.

OP posts:
jstbcs · 16/01/2006 10:19

havent got the books yet... so can someone post their daily menu, so i can get a feel for it please!

franch · 16/01/2006 14:27

puff, as you said to me last week, well done for staying in control

I've lost 1lb this week - quite a relief as I pigged out at BIL's silver wedding on Sat and felt awful. I'm finding I start the week with a couple of days of being really good, then waver a little Wed-Fri, then throw caution to the wind a bit over the weekend. That's why Helen Foster's 'weekend off' diet interested me, but I suspect that may be better for when I've reached my target weight.

So - I'm now officially HALF WAY! Feels like an achievement but also quite daunting. Lost 8.5lb since end Nov, got the same again to lose, which I know won't be as easy. In fact I may stop a couple of pounds short of my goal and wait till I've stopped breastfeeding to shed the rest, as I'm sure my uncharacteristically generous boobs account for a pound or two

Hope everyone else had good news on the scales this morning

Prettybird · 16/01/2006 15:54

Can I join in please?!

I've actually been doing the Sunday Times Low GI Diet for the past week and have lost 5lb! I was 11st 1lb last Monday and I was 10St 10Lb this morning.

Have to admit though, it was helped by the fact that my period started last Monday!

I had pigged out over Christmas: allowed myslef to do it guilt free as I just wanted to relax after a tough few months (miscarriage, follwed by really busy time at work) - but now I've go my Salopettes to get in to by 10 Febraury!

I have found the recipes in the Sunday Times useful inspiration and dh and I have eaten well over the last week. Hoave followed one or two properly and used some others more as a base for ideas and substuting other ingredients that still fit with the basic principles.

Have been off the alcohol for a week now too, which I am sure has really helped. Was tempted last Tuesday when I got home late and really stressed and dh offered me a G&T, but succeeded in saying "no"

Even managed to go on a Mumsnet night out and drink water all evening! Made sure to drive there rather than take the train, to ensure that I would stay "good".

Wasn't so good last night as I was out at my Mum & Dad's and Mum had cooked roast lamb with raost potatoes and veg. But I only had one roast potato, lots of veg and didn't have gravy. But I did eat the whole slice of yummy baked cheesecake that Mum served me - but with plenty of the rapsberry and reducrrant compote. Turned down the wine and the after dinner chocolates though!

My objective now is to lose 1-2lb a week until we go away (just over 3 weeks time) - I want to be under 10st 7lb, so that should get me there. Anything extra would be a bonus.

franch · 16/01/2006 16:21

Welcome Prettybird and well done with the weight loss !

Piffle · 16/01/2006 17:23

I've managed to get to and stay at the same weight for 2 weeks, I think ditching alcohol after xmas, really helped me lose over 2 kgs in almost 10 days, that has stayed off
And today I started the F word
Fitness
Did a Davina work out from her new dvd
arghhh
Am hoping with very sensible eating that will help shift the last few lbs for me...
Am dying to know how long exercise takes to kick in to weightloss calculations too???

franch · 16/01/2006 17:31

well done piffle! have you read the exercise section in the rick gallop book?

Piffle · 16/01/2006 17:42

Thx
I feel a bit of a fraud as I'm well within BMI and am not overweight per se...
This is probably why only exercise will shift the last few bits
But I do see the GI eating as a lifestyle plan not just a way to lose weight.
I feel 10000% better for eating like this and that alone is reason to stick on it.

franch · 16/01/2006 17:59

not a fraud at all, I'm well within BMI too but using this as a way to shift post-baby weight and get back to my usual self while still breastfeeding. I do find that the energy hype about low-GI is well justified too

poppetmummy · 16/01/2006 19:04

wihtin bmi........if only!!! you lukcy lucky things!

puff - 7 stone wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is amazing weel done you. i've lost 2 stone in 5 months, so going quite well, gi is obviously right for you then! you must be getting towards your goal then? i still have 3 stone to go, but will get there, just takes time hey.

jstbcs - if you have sky, watch discovery health channel 154, 'a-list diet' think its at 1.30 and maybe repeatwed at 9 (ish), its series of the food doctor, should just give you an idea of the gi in general! go to library, they should have loads of books you could borrow till you decide which is the one for you. good luck!!!

melbob · 16/01/2006 20:32

Well done everyone.

saker I think ou're right about my scales I was thinking the same thing myself.

Whatever my right weight is I know I have lost quite a bit as I tried on a few key clothes like my wedding outfit and a shirt I haven't worn for some time.

Saker · 17/01/2006 10:05

Well done Prettybird, Franch and everyone who has lost this week! I expect you'll see a good loss next week Puff, and the trend is very much downwards!

I lost 2lbs this week so very happy with that. However my goal this next week must just be to maintain as I am going away with old student friends for the weekend and there isn't a hope of maintaining the diet well for that! Will try and stick to decaf tea though.

robin3 · 17/01/2006 10:21

As some of you know I lost 2st on the GI last year but stopped due to pregnancy. Not that you have to, but it was as much as i could do to keep food down so worrying about what it is, was the least of my issues.

Anyway glad to see you're all still doing brilliantly and again just wanted to say that bar the extra pregnancy weight I've kept off what I had lost. This is such an effective diet and the weight will stay off for much longer I promise.

puff · 17/01/2006 13:28

Well done on the weight losses.

I'm having a better week - back to my usual regime, with 1 or 2 adjustments eg had a ffod doctor dinner yesterday which was tasty.
