GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Thanks robin3, that's very encouraging.

So, quick survey: what is everyone's #1 all-time favourite low-GI recipe? I'm interested in desserts and treats as well as main courses. Mine's probably Helen Foster's chicken with spicy pearl barley - a big surprise as I never used to like barley in broths and things.

I had given up on Rick Gallop's recipes after making his awful meatloaf, but having recently made his 'chocolate' cookies, I'm thinking he may be worth another look. Any recommendations?

MrsDoolittle · 17/01/2006 14:29

Well as I'm now 35 weeks pregnant I'm not following a weight loss plan, I just needed to slow down the rate at which I was getting fat and feel better.
I have to say that I feel loads better and I really mean that and I've only being doing it a week.
Porridge or unsweetened muesli for breakfast, Still using full-fat milk though.
A piece of fruit or a handful of mixed nuts for mid-morning snack - whichever comes to hand.
Waldorf salad as per R.Gallop, or cottage cheese, celery, 6 (!) oatcakes for lunch and an apple or nuts. Or a veggie, tomatoey, pasta salad for lunch.
Banana for afternoon snack.
I eat dinner with dh and have to admit to eating potatoes although I have cut down. We had haggis last night! Or veggie curry with brown rice, or something low carb-ish with brown rice.
So not awfully strict as you can see, but I feel so much better. I'm able to cope much better during the day, I'm up less during the night, I feel more comfortable in my maternity clothes and my skin is definitely smoother (no word of a lie).
All this compared to the goodies - mince pies, chocolates, Christmas cake, puddings and bread I was eating in the run up to Christmas.
I honestly feel better for it, so I have no trouble convincing myslef to stick to it.

Hi

DH and I had the duck with orange and chilli from Sunday Times GI recipes it was delicious and the Hunter Chicken from Rick Gallup yellow book.

Has anyone bought the Gallup family book? Is it worth it? Does it give advices for little ones (DS 18months) obviously don't want to put him on diet but think family healthy eating has to be a good thing.

Also is it very repatitive of the other books? I think the yellow book is a bit of a swizz and the teascos book too, they just repeat the green book

MrsDoolittle · 19/01/2006 21:44

melbob - I have the family Gallop book and I like it! Dd is 21 months and I'm pregnant, I am finding it really useful. Lots of sensible advise!

Saker · 19/01/2006 21:49

I love the chicken liver salad from AWT. It doesn't really have any carbs with it either so then you can have Rick Gallop's yellow book fruit crumble for pudding. I also really like the leek and pea soup from AWT.

I also like the sweet scones and cranberry muffins from the Rick Gallop yellow book - they make good snacks if you are fond of a cake as I am. (I don't have the green book.)

Not so good this morning: I know I shouldn't have got on the scales, but I did...

.... and I was 11st

I've been good all week: still no alcohol, and my only "slips" have been a whole 4 chips at my SILs (and was so pleased at myself for being restrained) and one peice of a giant Toblerone at work yesterday.

Melbob look at it as a lifestyle change not a diet esp for children, my kids are a lot better 6 mths on with the whole foods approach.
Neither of them are on a diet it is all adaptable.

jstbcs · 21/01/2006 14:29

I'm doing the GL diet and it goes something like this:

breakfast - 1 bowl of porridge + 5 almonds, natural yoghurt and half an apple or pear
snack - 1 apple + few pumpkin seeds or 2 oatcakes + hummous
lunch - something like lentil soup + 1 oatcake and cottage cheese + 1 apple or pear
snack - Rick Gallop scone
dinner - salad + tinned sardines + pasta salad (v. limited amount of pasta) + cucumber, tomato, pepper. Natural yoghurt with tahini or a few nuts or half a piece of fruit.

prettybird · 23/01/2006 09:04

Well after another full week on the diet, I am back at......

......10St 10lb.

So in a week, I have lost........

.......zero pounds

But after the shock increase on Friday, at least I am back to 10st 10lb.

Still another 4lb to go my (initial) target weight on Feb 9th (the day I go skiing).

melbob · 23/01/2006 19:31

How did everyone do? I stayed the same which is a real pain as I have stuck to it but hey ho

Piffle · 23/01/2006 20:37

I spent a week at the same weight so I@ve upped my activity, walked into town a few times a week (2 mile round trip) and cut out the one or two small treats like the odd bikkie and choc square and am pleased that over the weekend despite going out for a meal with dh - An Indian with 2 pints of beer
I have lost a little which has inspired me all over gain.

puff · 23/01/2006 21:06

grumpy - have you got the Helen Foster book? She's brought a new one out too I think.

I forgot to weight myself this morning as I had to dash out to an appointment and then not back til 3pm, so will weigh in tomorrow.

I am still really contipated despite taking a lot of lactulose. I eat tons of fruit and veg, not sure what is going on.

MrsDoolittle · 23/01/2006 21:08

puff · 23/01/2006 21:25

Puff -

I have to admit I have been constipated sometimes in the GI diet in spite of huge amounts of fruit and veg like you say. I find plenty of tomatoes help! It hasn't been a problem at all on the GL diet even though I have been eating less fruit (although I have had a lot of lentils).

I have a theory (or should I say hypothesis as I don't have a shred of evidence to support it) that if your blood sugar stays low, your insulin levels stay low so you don't lay down the calories you are taking in as fat. These calories have to go somewhere and so instead you don't absorb as much and the food passes through you more easily. So I wonder if you are eating a lot of fruit and this pushes the overall GL up then your body hangs on to your calories making it harder to lose. Sorry it sounds like a lot of rubbish now I've written it .

I should weigh in tomorrow but am reluctant to because had a weekend away with old university friends and lots of food so don't feel like the results are likely to be good.
