GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

The weightwatchers 1 point soup - if I remeber coreectky, is definitely low GI.
I am eating something similar right now for lunch.
Al dente wholemeal pasta, an onion, a can of chopped tomatoes, a can of red idney beans and handful of frozen peas and a chopped carrot. I also threw in a variety of herbs and a touch of salt
Very nice.
Thing is, I want some more...........

Saker · 10/01/2006 14:10

Hi

I lost 4lbs this week although some of that was Christmas bloat most likely ! ("you have to remember half of that is water" as that stern medic kept saying on the Lorraine Kelly thing last week ).

It's nice to see lots of new joiners. Sportmad I won't give a sample of my day as I am trying the slightly different GL diet which is more restrictive on things like carrots and apples. Happily Hummous seems to have a nice low GL value and it seems I don't have to worry about the calories.......yet.

puff · 10/01/2006 14:13

Well done saker !

How are you finding GL generally?

sportmad - I'll post a typical day when I have a bit more time this evening.

sarochka, saker, butty, puff - really well done on the weight loss. I was very good yesterday and so far today, so a good start to the week!

franch · 10/01/2006 14:44

Apparently Helen Foster (of the Easy GI Diet) has written a book called "The Weekend-Off Diet", where you only diet Mon-Fri ...... as followed by Renee Zellwegger and Sandra Bullock ..... Anybody heard anything about this?!

puff · 10/01/2006 15:08

yes, sounds good, I was thinking that when I get to target, I'd buy it, haven't seen it yet though.

OP posts:

Ok, after much perusing of The Food Doctor Everyday Diet, I have come to the conclusion that it is in effect a GI Diet, like Rick Gallop, there's a focus on balancing proteins with the right (complex) carbohydrates and eating "good" fats. Plus he takes into account people who think they may have problems with wheat and offers alternatives.

He discusses the GI Index a lot and the book will fit in nicely with what I have been doing, but also be a refreshing change.

So.....I'm going to follow the initial 7 day plan (quite strict) and then see how I go from there. There is a detailed shopping list which I used when going round the supermarket.

puff · 10/01/2006 17:20

oops, mean the first book The Food Doctor Diet, second book is the follow up.

Hi!Thanks MrsD.I had my soup today and loved it.The thing is i have couple of books about GI-diet-main one i am following is R.Gallop, but my partner bought for me Azmina Govindji and Nina Puddefoot(available from WHSmith-£2 off-£4.99), and they r giving values to the food-sample:apples-0.5 gipi's; Weetabix and ss milk-4.5gipi's...They r recomending 17 gipi's for the first 2 weeks..and so on..Did anyone else get in contact with that book???

Piffle · 10/01/2006 20:21

I've lost another half a kg in the last few days - my bog thing was giving up drinking I've been on GI but still drinking for last 6 mths and now have kicked the demon drink am really noticing the deal
Loving the nairns stem giner oatcake biscuits, totally fill the bikky void for me

puff · 10/01/2006 20:23

well done everyone on their weight loss this week.

Puff, I like the recipes in the GL cookbook I mentioned. Some interesting ideas such as Savoy cabbage with creme fraiche. There's one for bread made with polenta which I'm going to try once I've got some polenta. If it's any good I'll post it because you might like it. It is very low GL and presumably wheat free.

It seems to be less strict on calories than Rick Gallop in the sense that you can eat plenty of things like creme fraiche, hummous and nuts but I do miss my fruit. I am still eating some fruit and plenty of veg and pulses but I did like to have an apple or a pear whenever I felt hungry and I can't do that now. There's one part of the diet I am not sticking to and that is the protein portion sizes which are very small (e.g. 50g of chicken breast). Patrick Holford is a great fan of Nairn's oatcakes also so you would like that!

MrsDoolittle · 11/01/2006 13:16

Never got round to breakfast this morning The remembered at 12.30 that I had forgotten it because my tummy was rumbling. Thankfully, I had the tomatoe and pasta concoction I made yesterday in the fridge.
Do you think I should weigh stuff? I haven't been.
I went into Tescos this morning and bought some of their new 'wholefoods' range. I bought pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. I already have some rolled oats with wheatgerm added and flaked almonds. Do you think I could make up the ingredients of meusli? I saw that soemone suggested soaking it in milk overnight and I thought I would try doing that.

MrsDoolittle · 11/01/2006 13:18

Heck! I couldn't do that Saker. I kust have eaten 3 apples yesterday and I'm trying hard not to eat dd's bananas!

puff · 11/01/2006 13:26

Those ingredients would make a good muesli.

I've never weighed anything MrsD - can't bear diets with loads of weighing and measuring.

Sportmad, a typical day's eating for me is:

breakfast: porridge with skimmed milk, a few sultanas mixed in

snack: piece of fruit, 2 oatcakes spread with hummus and a small handful of olives

lunch: large bowl of homemade soup eg bean and vegetable, small pot plain yoghurt and a heaped tblspn of nuts/seeds.

snack: lentil pate, 2 oatcakes, crudites, piece of fruit

dinner: often something from Anthony Worral Thompson's GI Diet cookbook

MrsDoolittle · 11/01/2006 13:38

Sounds lovely Puff!!! That's really inspiring.
Maybe I'll have some oatcakes and cottage cheese now, I'm staring to get hungry again.

puff · 11/01/2006 14:34

Well....I'm less than a day into The Food Doctor's 7 Day Diet and I'm afraid there is so little food I know I won't cope!

he recommends you do this 7 days first and then move onto the rest of the book (which looks good), but I am starving. Breakfast was 2 tblspns of porridge oats and 2 tblspns of yoghurt.

Mid morning snack was some clear soup a piece of celery, a couple of strips of red pepper and 1 tblspn of pumpkin seeds.

Lunch was a small can of tuna, a couple of pieces of broccoli and 4 cherry tomatoes.

I went to the gym this morning and have felt lousy since, because normally I'd have worked out having had a big bowl of porridge for breakfast.

I think I will have to up the quantities seeing as I've bought all the ingredients for this week now. I definitely need more carbohydrate. Basically, this is a detox week and as I've been eating healthily for a long time, probably unnecessary for me. Ho hum!

OP posts:
MrsDoolittle · 11/01/2006 14:39

Sounds like this is too much for you puff.
You body has already got itself into good digestion habits - you don't need to do this to yourself.
If your body goes into 'starvation' mode you will do yourslef more damage than good, I think.

franch · 11/01/2006 14:43

Agh puff that sounds a bit starvationesque to me! 2 tbsp oats!? But then I'm breastfeeding so it's a long time since I could even think about cutting back like that.

MrsD - talking of the new Tesco wholefoods range, I got their Healthy Living leaflet through the door (I think you get it automatically if you have a ClubCard?) and there are some nice low-GI/wholefood recipes in there.

puff · 11/01/2006 14:46

I agree!!

I didn't really "clock" the quantities involved - 3 mouthfuls of porridge is no good to me !

I shall go back to my usual way of eating and just incorporate the ingredients I have bought.

Then, next week, try some of the recipes in the latter part of the book as they seem yum.

sarochka · 11/01/2006 19:06

omg I cuold not do that eat just 3 tbsp of something - this is why I haven't lose the weight then !! this thread is an inspiration but I still can't do that - been positive today and hoping to keep it up.
