Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

I've been following this thread as I try to go low carb. It has been almost 3 weeks for me, although in Week 1 there were some consistent mistakes, such as having yoghurt one day or potatoes the next. Nonetheless I did see some result right off.

Unfortunately, I can't properly join in because I don't have a scale, so really I am writing just to share - I am so pleased. I thought nothing could shift the 2.5 stone baby weight I gained with ds1 in 2007. It has been so discouraging. Now in 2.5 weeks I've definitely lost inches everywhere with a visible difference.

Custardo's website has been very useful, and put me on to heavy cream, which I never would considered to be allowable. This is a great help with my morning coffee, which would be a danger zone without the chance of cream.

I am in the states, so some recipes are mysterious - have no idea what celeriac is. By the same token some things done here might not be available there, like using stevia and splenda?

I'd love to add exercise but part of the problem has always been time, as I work full time and have a baby dd as well.

It is interesting to actually notice the absence of insulin spikes and the sort of hunger pangs I was familiar with.

We are out tomorrow night, for a Tapas meal - which should be OK, but is never predictable. Then on Saturday we're going to stay over night with some wealthy friends of ours who are serious wine collectors. We've been invited for a port and cheese evening. I have no idea if there will be any other food, but I can't see how I can get away with only eating cheese all evening!

I'm hoping for a bit more of a loss tomorrow, but the weekend will probably wipe it out.

However, now that I've got these two occasions out of the way (they have been in the calendar for some time), I am going to start the Harcombe Diet properly from Monday.

BIWI - we had a difficult weekend food wise last weekend, and there was no way I could stay in low carb mode, but the joy was I didn't put any weight on. Then it took me two days back into ketosis. Its not always possible to maintain low carb.

Well done! I think it's too easy to 'over' snack on cheese and nuts - partly because it's so liberating to be able to eat them when you're low carbing - but there are lots of calories in both of them. I know that you're not really supposed to calorie count when you're low carbing, but I do think that the amount of calories you can eat with either must have an effect.

And with nuts, although a small amount is low carb, how many of us just stick to a small amount? Blush

ZimboMum · 07/10/2011 11:45

2.2lbs down so far but think it water/upset tummy rather than proper weight. Onwards and upwards as they say!

Thank you for all your advice and support so far :)

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

catinboots · 07/10/2011 12:28

Is it ok to join? Sorry to arrive to the party so late Grin

I've got the right ump today and need some advice. I got married in August and weighed 10 stone. 2 weeks honeymoon, a month back at work and now I'm 10st 13lb Angry

I started Pig to Twig on Monday and I have followed it strictly. I weighed myself this morning to find I had only lost 2lbs. " miserable little pounds. What am I doing wrong?? I'm drinking water by the gallon

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/10/2011 12:33

2lbs is still 2lbs! And just try thinking of something visual. 2lbs is the equivalent of 4 packets of butter. That's a lot of fat! And you have lost that in only 4 days. How isn't that a great result?

catinboots · 07/10/2011 12:39

I know, I know Grin

I gues I've been reading too many forums about people losing up to 10lb in the first week.

Even in the book one of them lost 5lb in the first couple of days.

Hello, can I also join, have tried SW on and off but with little success as I think in reality I can't be told I can have unlimited amounts of something or else I will just overdo it, for last couple of days I have been trying to limit my carb intake and would like to do it with your support. (I have also been looking into the Blood type diet which basically supports low carb as well).

RatherBeOnThePiste · 07/10/2011 16:40

blood type diet?? Confused

OP posts:
obrigada · 07/10/2011 17:02

Sounds strange I know Rather, should have said eating right for your blood type, it was mentioned on a thread the other day and I have been reading about it!

catinboots · 08/10/2011 07:42

Obri - I've tried and failed atevery diet know to mankind.

I personally found SW was too much food for my fucked up metabolism. I know I personally get better results from low carbing. I've got the Pig to Twig book on my Kindle and I'm now on day 6. I's the first time I've stuck to one particular diet in years. They seem to make low-carbing very simple.

Starting weight 10st 13lb
Weight today 10st 9lb

Woohoo!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/10/2011 09:45

Making fajitas here this evening. Last time they had the wrap things and I used iceberg instead and they were yum.

Also need to do a food shop as running out of everything Grin maybe I should have a look at the Pig to Twig book. I even have a kindle!

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 08/10/2011 10:44

Well first night out was OK (On the food front. Let's draw a veil over the amount of wine we consumed Grin).

Managed to eat mostly low carb stuff, although I had a piece of tortilla and some lentils. But not too much so hopefully OK.

Just tonight to go ...!

Welcome and well done, catinboots.

catinboots · 08/10/2011 11:51

I love Pig to Twig. It's two greedy normal women writing a day by day account of the diet. It's quite funny as well.

I've just been to Waitrose and bought some packets of their mini Pesto chicken fillets. Yum yum only 0.5g carb per pack.

I spent ages looking a sausages and the lowest carb I could find was 4.5g per 2 sausages. Can anybody recommenr any nice, low-carb sausages???

Through another forum I also just discovered this website which lloks good. Especially the soups.

catinboots · 08/10/2011 11:51

crap typing sorry

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/10/2011 13:23

Sainsbury's make these, which are lovely , and only 1g carbs per sausage

RnB · 08/10/2011 19:55

Wow - low carb fail for me. I blame the brighton meetup Wink Back on it tomorrow.

bigfatgypsy · 08/10/2011 21:35

I'll join you too if I may. I started low-carbing last weekend and amazingly I think I've lost about 4-5 lbs since then so I'm really happy. I haven't been mega-strict and have had the odd slice of (v tasty) Burgen bread.

I have a few questions for you:

1 Is there such a thing as 'too much' meat and veg? Dh has made a couple of HUGE dinners with very big pieces of steak and loads of veg and I couldn't eat it all. So even though there were no potatoes could I have overeaten or is there no limit?

2 Corn on the cob - yay or nay?

3 How do I make celeriac chips and how nice exactly are they? Smile
