Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

Can I make a suggestion for the thread?

Can we all agree to not put fails/food groups which don't fit into the diet on the thread? I just feel that it might tempt someone else to "fall off the wagon" if others are talking about carby foods.

I just remember when I did lighter life a few years ago there was a golden rule that when we attended class we were not allowed to talk about cheating and I think it really helped.

It might be more motivational to discuss all the lovely food that we can have on this diet and give each other ideas for what to have that day.

Don's tin hat Grin

i see what spam is saying and i agree actually. i dont thnk its helpful and encourages a culture of 'oops i cheated a little bit'

that really ducks me off especially on low carb diets, you cant cheat a little bit if you cheat - you come out of ketosis and the whole thing DOESN'T PISSIN' WORK GRRR. you cant cheat a little bit low carbing - and if you do, you are seriously not grasping the concept that makes low carbing work.

this isn';t low calorie, this isn't low fat. this is a particular concept based around sugar and fat levels and using eisting fat stores. which can only be done once you are in ketosis.

look at me all preachery. but i really do get annoyed with a 'oops i slipped on a bar of chocolate today and ate it , but otherwise have been good' you cant' dothat grrrr you can't cheat ' a little bit' THATS WHY IT WORKS GODDAMN IT

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 18/09/2011 15:46

Yeah, I know, sorry. I just wanted to publicly humiliate myself by admitting thqt I fell off the wagon and will start up again when I finished carbloading.
no more talk about carby food, got it.
Ketostix at the ready.

You are so right, oh wise one ...

RnB · 18/09/2011 17:05

How many grams of carbs are you all aiming for per day?

Has anyone tried the Balance milk chocolate bar (35g). It says on the lowcarbmegastore website that it's 3.3g but the packet says 30 something?? Am confused...

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/09/2011 17:06

You need to look at the figures again - it will probably say '... of which Xg are sugar/Yg are polyols'.

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/09/2011 17:06

I'm doing fine on the food front, but it's the white wine over the weekend that's obviously tripping me up. And Custy is absolutely right - this constitutes a cheat, so weight loss will be compromised.

Tortington · 18/09/2011 17:07

well rnb that has to do with polyols/fake sugar

dont let the sweets on lcmegastore fool you, you can only have a small amount a day or else you get too much fake sugar in your system and your system will use that for energy and not your existing stores of fat (ive seen you existing stores of fat my fucking arse lady)

and they have a lazitive effect if you take too many, which can be embarrassing if your at work and your clenching for dear life incase you shart yourself Grin

I 'over-dosed' on Thornton's Diabetic Toffee once, before I realised what a disastrous effect polyols could have on you. I actually pulled a muscle in my gut from the catastrophic diarrhoea it unleashed!

Don't say you haven't been warned, RnB!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 17:27

I agree with Spam - I don't want there to be a culture of slip ups and forgiveness! I want wellard low carbing.

Custardo. You may rant but you are right. This is a very specific diet. And it's not like low cal where you can eat something high in calories one day and just eat dust for the rest of the week.

Ultimately we will all know if this is the diet for us. Because if we keep slipping up then clearly it's not.

But at the moment I do find I'm am amateur really...you all seem so professional! I need to turn this round and make it pOsitive. Find stuff to have not just concentrate on the what I can't have. And to that end I have got celeriac coming tomorrow and I am going to make your chip things that go in the oven Custardo and I can't wait!

RnB if you want chocolate your best bet is to go for a good dark chocolate and have one or two squares, it won't give you diarrhoea!

Regarding carbs per day in the beginning I tried to aim for 20-30g but I do know I can go a lot higher than that and still stay in ketosis. However if you want something to aim for I would recommend between 20 and 30g.

Tortington · 18/09/2011 17:29

ooooooh shit - you - not they are amazing

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/09/2011 17:31

BTW, I made swede chips last night, which were lovely.

Peel and slice swede into chips. Boil them for around 10 minutes, then fry gently in some olive oil and butter till they are golden. Season with salt, black pepper and, if you like, a dusting of chilli powder/cayenne pepper.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 17:50

BIWI - positive things! Thank you. Grin
I want my celeriac chips NOW! But my order doesn't come until 6-7 tomorrow. Arse.

20-30g of carbs is a really helpful guideline for me the amateur. That will be v useful to keep in mind.

Tortington · 18/09/2011 17:54

i try not to go over 20g per day during the week.

how many carbs are swede chips?

i usually have 9 (yes i am very precise) celariac chips and count 7 carbs. quite thick thumb size chips though

SootySweepandSue · 18/09/2011 17:56

Just thought I'd add my word of warning on the low carb sweets. I bought some online which had german packaging so I did not heed the laxative warning. I was seriously ill for over 24hrs after eating them. Could hardly leave the bathroom and DP had to take day off to look after DD! I did eat the whole packet but had no idea I would be so ill. Blush

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/09/2011 18:06

Probably not many carbs, Custy. Boiled swede is 2.3g of carbs per 100g.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 18:09

I think I need to get out more because I am almost over excited by celeriac! Bloody hell. I worry myself sometimes Blush

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 18:11

That is weird because I would have thought swede had loads of carbs like spuds?!

OP posts:
Tortington · 18/09/2011 18:15

me too which is why i haent used it before but just checked and its correct.

omg - lots of new things to try

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/09/2011 18:18

Oh yes! Mashed swede with lots of butter and black pepper is to die for!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 18:55

fucketty fuck I'm adding swede to my order!

OP posts:
RnB · 18/09/2011 20:03

Ooh mashed swede is lush! Custy just made your sausage casserole - it was absolutely delicious.

Thanks for all the warning re the low carb sweets/choc. Damn it I've just ordered bloody loads of the stuff Confused Do you reckon 1 bar a day of the choc or 10 gummy bears will be ok? Damn it, I'm struggling with missing sweet stuff! Have had 2 sugar free jellies and 1 bar of chocolate today. Can feel mild rumblings Wink

Will try to stick to 20-30g then. Just totted up today's total - 21g.

Would having 1 gin & slimline tonic knock me out of ketosis? Haven't got my sticks yet...

RnB · 18/09/2011 20:07

Ooh and OMG to the reactions you guys have had to the sweets Sad you poor things!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/09/2011 20:32

and I am going to make sausage casserole - my kids will like that too. Am already feeling more positive about things to make rather than just stuff to avoid!
