Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

Vodka and sugar free jelly does work Smile

Been ok today. The scales hovered this morning between staying the same and maybe gaining one, but it may be I'm due on. Haven't gone off the plan, the only thing I may have done is had a few more than 20 carbs, maybe 30 or so.
Determined to do this though, as I'm off on holiday in November and want to have lost a few more pounds at least. I have a LOT of weight to lose (think weight of your average 10 year old and then some...)

I know I can do it as I gave up smoking 8 weeks ago after been a 20 a day smoker for 30 years. (Funnily enough, I started smoking as someone at school said it would keep you slim. I was about 7lbs overweight then)

DH is being lovely. At the weekend I said to him 'it's eggs and bacon for brekkie , roast and green veg, then mackerel and salad for supper, I'll cook the protein, if you want pots/couscous/pasta/bread with any of it, you cook your carbs. and he did! I just know I would be cooking pasta or whatever and absent mindedly taste it to see it's cooked/seasoned.

Gammon steaks and mushroom and cream sauce for dinner tonight!.

Yes, I've definitely heard of turnips being used as a low carb potato substitute. This recipe sounds amazing.

Tortington · 15/09/2011 07:25

lost 1lb this am

i don't know how i have been low crbing for two years and never knew that turnips were ok to use

they are similar in carb value to celeriac

have ordered dh to bring me home a bucketful - turnip mash for me tonight yay

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/09/2011 08:55

Another 1.75 pounds down this morning! Yay! Grin

Hopefully I will achieve my first mini target this week, which is to see the scales start with 10 rather than 11.

FreeButtonBee · 15/09/2011 08:58

Saw 10st 6.5lb this morning. Yay! Moving downwards, slowly but surely. Shit day ahead of me.

goldenbaby · 15/09/2011 11:48

Hi guys. Please can I join in? I have been doing the Idiot Proof Diet since February and I've been at my target weight for the last 4 months or so. I found the weight loss very easy and maintaining wasn't too bad until the last couple of weeks. Now I'm back at work, though, (after maternity leave) I am being tempted by carbs.

I don't know whether it is because the canteen is there, so I can pop in to buy somethng to eat whereas at home I was out of the way of temptation; or whether it is because my job is quite active so I genuinely am hungrier than at home. I suspect it is a combination of the above.

Anyway, this last couple of weeks I have gone a bit off piste. I haven't weighed myself for a couple of weeks because I'm dreading seeing what the damage is! It can't be more than a few pounds though, surely?!

I'm thinking that possibly hanging out with you guys will help to keep me on the straight and narrow :)

Turnip mash or chips for me tonight, too. maybe with some chicken and leek in creamy sauce..
1.5lbs down since yesterday, I think I am back on track and getting used to the LC now.
Custardo, I had a little look through your recipes last night, they are exactly what I need so I can just add carbs for the male population of our household (as I am outnumbered 3:1).
thank you for sharing.

Chicken and eggs for breakfast.
Chicken, slices of manchego and tomato for lunch.
Chicken and turnips for dinner.
Can you see a pattern?

emmanana · 15/09/2011 12:53

Stayed the same this morning. Grrrrr. it may be water retention pre mens though. extra careful to count carbs today, only had 2g so far.

FreeButtonBee · 15/09/2011 13:51

Plain Yog for breakfast

Beef Goulash soup w/ blob sour cream for lunch (had to pick up some spud again but again, it was really tasty and filling)

Dinner - not sure as I am going to Pilates at 8. Might eat before in which case it'll be eggs - prob a cheese and bacon omelette.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/09/2011 14:47

goldenbaby - get back on the piste!!

Thanks :) I'll weigh myself in the morning and let you know what the damage is. I've been good today and I'm feeling motivated to carry on the good work at the moment. I think I'll have salmon and broccoli for dinner

Double virtuous Grin

Gincognito · 15/09/2011 17:44

Ah, epic fail today. The only positive is that I haven't had my usual large bag of giant buttons. Still, it's only a small compensation :(

Was I being too extreme? I just felt so awfully ill when I got up this morning. I had to lie down for a couple of hours because I thought I was going to be sick. Hmm, perhaps it was a virus?

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/09/2011 18:32

Gin - sounds like an extreme reaction, so could possibly have been some kind of bug/virus. What did you eat today?

Tortington · 15/09/2011 19:02

DID turnip mash today

turnip is the new celeriac my friends - its lovely, i posted a picture on my blog

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/09/2011 19:05

When you say turnip, do you mean turnip or swede, Custy?!

Tortington · 15/09/2011 19:20

it was deffo a turnip

a swede is like a turnip - but bigger

a radish is like a turnip but smaller Grin

an orange isn;t like a turnip

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 15/09/2011 19:26

I had turnip chips. they were interesting. A bit soggy. turnip mash tomorrow. custi, did you add a recipe?

Tortington · 15/09/2011 19:58

well not a recipe as such - i mean you just boil it and mash it Grin

NEXT WEEK i want to make a FRITATTA turnip frittata

any ideas? im thinking, grate a turnip add onion and an egg and see how that turns out

what say you LOW CARBERS?

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 15/09/2011 20:00

I am in favour of fritata, but I would add more stuff to it. maybe a bit of cheese. maybe something green.... hmmmm.
