Thought I might take the liberty to start a new thread as can't seem to cram another post onto the old one and I have some positive news to start a new one with! :)

I have lost weight - almost as much as Jillian claims you will and have 2 days left!

------

Everyone is doing so well - putting me to shame with talk of Level 3 going on! Envy
:)

Day 1 for me (no pain yet, but I will probably be in agony tomorrow morning). I will be trying to shred and run, as I have a 1/2 marathon at the end of May. I am horribly unfit at present.

Quick question - how heavy do the hand weights need to be to be effective (I have wimpy upper body strength)?

notyummy · 03/04/2011 20:38

I did a fantastic run along the sunny river Thames this morning at 8am. About 5-6 miles but felt shorter because of the lovely views and ambience. Staying in hotel so nice breakfast on return.

6W6P tomorrow- looking forward to it in a strange way! Those who gave done if already, I understand weights are needed. What weights did you use?

In answer to the query about Shred weights, I believe Jillian says minimum 3-5lbs (ie around 1.5 to 3kg). If you really aren't used to exercise, then perhaps start at 1kg and work up- although I think you would needs slightly more to notice a big difference.

haggis01 · 03/04/2011 20:45

I started with small bottles of water, then tins and then bought a set of weights when I realised I was going to stick with it - I use the 1kg each hand ones and sometimes 1.5kg -but found I was a bit too achy in the shoulders after using them for the entire workout so do a half and half (Iam 5ft5 - 11.5 stone). I think the dvd should give advice but doesn't which is poor. On amazon.com (US site) many reviewers say that Jillian uses 3lb weights.

I think the weight to use can also depend on your height and weight - be careful though if the weights are too heavy you can cause damage with some of the moves.(According to a friend who is a bit of a sports guru)

saltyseadog · 03/04/2011 22:02

Thanks both. I will try to get to Argos in my lunch hour tomorrow - in the mean time I will stick with tins (so glamorous :o).

notyummy - your run sounds marvellous. I used to live in London and love running along the Thames, as you say it's so uplifting with the views on a sunny spring day.

TooTiredToArgue · 03/04/2011 22:20

Salty,
John Lewis sell weights pretty cheaply too, I noticed today.
I too started with tins (and only recently upgraded to weights). No shame in that! Smile

conquita · 04/04/2011 01:13

tootired - please do not let the changing room mirror get you down. When I was first shredding I too had this moment when I saw a photo of myself and I felt like no matter how much exercise I was doing, my thighs were awful and my arms were still massive, but must just keep it up, DO NOT let these thoughts stop you. One day soon, you will look in the mirror again and think oh my god, when did this happen, you will notice you are more toned, and feel proud and happy within yourself knowing your hard work has paid off. It WILL happen, just don't allow those negative thoughts stop you from achieving the body shape you deserve. You just have to think that continuing shredding will be changing your body for the better, it cannot be worse than it was before you started to shred.

On level 3 , can someone please advise why she does the jumps in the cardio section on circuit 3? What do they do exactly? I just feel like I am jumping up and down, but am not sure what the point of it is. This is the 4th round of shred for me [am just doing it 4 times a week though], only this time round is the first where I can do the plank, lift the weight and hoik the leg up in the air with a dignified effort.

notyummy · 04/04/2011 07:33

Sensible words there Conquita!

On the jumps, I think they are to really push you and rev up the heart rate. I certainly find that the hardest cardio interval of the whole DVD. I am quite 'cardio fit' as a runner and don't really find much if the cario work that hard..... But I do find those jumps pretty challenging!

notyummy that sounds like a lovely run (slightly jealous) - i've drifted away again the last couple of weeks but calf feels good now so will try to get out this week.

conquita - fourth time round - you are amazing :) well done!

londonlottie - you don't necessarily need to loose weight - you just need to shred some more :)

Day 7 i think on L1 6W6P this morning for me. Using my new (mother's day pressie) weight - Jillian recommends 3-8lbs single weight - i'm using 3kg now (previously was holding my 2 1kg together at same time).

My stomach looks awful but is so much better IYSWIM - the toning of the muscles has highlighted the rolls of fat! Still at least a difference is being made and logic suggests that if i continue those rolls will eventually shrink.

Jelli rugby was fine thanks - no major injuries - bit of a studding and a bruise on face - the boys did well and came in second and fortunately we finished about 5 mins before the torrential downpour (after 7 hrs of mostly sunshine).

I hate burpees.

haggis01 · 04/04/2011 11:57

6W6P l1 5th time - still getting deafeated by side plank raises, but getting better at spider palnks. Flatmouse you will be seriously ripped using the 3KG weight , I am using 1.5kg and finding some of the moves challenging especially the lunge with raising the weight up above the head - respect!

conquita thank you so much - really needed to hear (read?!) that today. saw my tummy in good light yesterday and felt miserable at the state of it. but keeping calm and carrying on is the only way to do anything about it. it's not going to change overnight, but change will happen. :)

feel fairly dire today, usual post-nights grimness but am having a big proper coffee and will shred after that. going to tootle round house and get some jobs done while i drink it.

flatmouse · 04/04/2011 12:16

3kg weights would be really going some in shredding where it's one in each hand ... (when i return to shredding i'll try 1.5kg and up to 2kg if i need to); but for the 6W6P I couldn't feel anything with 1kg, could a bit with the 2kg together and after this morning feel "pleasantly achy" having used a single 3kg - will see how i feel in the morning ;)

Side planks i'm consistently hitting 5 before i collapse (think JM does at least 15), spider plank i'm doing JM intermediate version but am sure my butt is too high in the air!

I (still) hate burpees!

BalloonSlayer · 04/04/2011 12:47

Did my 3rd day of 6W6P today. I really enjoy it, much more than shredding.

Pointless observation of the day It's funny how there are lots of close ups of the blonde lady: her tummy and her alarming camel-toe, but the dark haired lady never gets a close up. I wonder why that is?

gracelesslady · 04/04/2011 12:48

just did level 1 again... was thinking about my whining of no progress: i picked level 1 as the easy version, and used 2kg weights and mainly did natalie shredding. if that's not progress what is?! still can't see how i'm ever going to do a proper press up though. can any of you lot do them??

knottyhair · 04/04/2011 12:54

Graceless, I did L1 today (have been right through the levels), same as you, 2kg weights and Natalie versions. I can just about do 1 set of press-ups although I really struggle. On the second set I had to put my knees down after about 2! Weirdly I find the walking press-ups in L2, and the travelling ones in L3 much easier than just straight forwards ones!

notyummy · 04/04/2011 12:58

Graceless - you WILL be able to do a proper press-up....honest. I think it can take time - and obviously for people with weight to lose (not saying that you have btw) I think it is harder as obviously they are pushing more!

I can do quite a lot of press-ups. Still not my favourite exercise, but I can push them out.

BalloonSlayer · 04/04/2011 13:16

I am 9st 5 and I can't do a proper press-up, even after shredding since January. My arms are just too weedy! Grin

gracelesslady · 04/04/2011 14:16

i might try and have a go.... have got dory (from finding nemo) singing "keep on shredding, shredding, shredding, keep on shredding..." in my head. maybe i need professional help Wink

have an hug ((())) early and hang in there. you can borrow dory if you like!

just did a test press up, and got all the way down and fell over laughing. no way i can get back up again from nose-on-the-floor. does it count if you just go down about three or four inches? i can do a few of them but i suspect i'm cheating.....

knottyhair · 04/04/2011 14:28

Graceless, my nose isn't on the floor! If that's the only thing that counts, then I can't do them either! Early, 5lbs loss is amazing! Can you not have a biscuit if you really want one? Depending on the biscuit, calorie wise it's probably not that different to an apple.

notyummy · 04/04/2011 14:39

Graceless - we used to have to do press-up tests when I served in the military. The 'test' of whether you were doing a proper one involved getting someone to make a fist and put it on the floor (up the way, as if they were going to play 'one potato, two potato') where the front of your shoulder /collar bone comes down as you do the press-up. You had to touch the fist firmly each time for it to count as a press-up. Don't think this is quite as slow as 'nose on the floor'....but fairly low!

Leverkusen · 04/04/2011 15:39

Oh my lord.
Just did Level 3 day 1. This is a whole new level of sweating.

gracelesslady · 04/04/2011 15:59

oh well maybe i just need to do my 3-4 inch down and back up again version and probably i'll develop the strength to do 5 inches, then 6, then i'll have my nose on the floor (or dh's fist!), back up again and look like natalie ha ha ha :o

i suppose you have to actually DO the thing you're trying to get better at - there's no way i'm suddenly going to spontaneously go from girlie to proper! bit of a revelation there.... thanks notyummy and knottyhair

early are you feeling any better? xxx
