Oh no herb not your knees as well.

This is now my 3rd day off and mine still feel dodgy.

southeastastra · 14/01/2011 21:08

it seems to be a real knee trembling sort of work out

have you been positioning your knees correctly? i find it hard to work out where threy're meant to be some times

mothernature · 14/01/2011 21:15

day 5 level 1 doesn't feel as though its getting any easier, lots of weight to loose though so maybe somthing is happening underneath all the blubber.... my knees dont like jumping jacks or skipping strangely when i hold my belly and boobs it gets better Smile hubby is doing it with me it made him sick on the first attempt Shock

southeastastra · 14/01/2011 21:17

my dp wants to do it with me tomorrow too (oo-er) Grin

i bet he thinks it will be really easy

i hate the counting down at the end of each exercise they go on forever Grin

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 22:40

hey ladies, i did not shred yesterday but had a six mile round trip bike ride with dd for her swimming lesson. her attached on trailgator so was bloody hard work.

I did level 2 today, but really struggled with it. lost count of days so going to have to read back.

thought I best check in but will have a read of thread in the morning.

hope evryone is doing o.k.

I dont think I can feel the benifits this week, still waiting for yoga dvd. a bit deflated with the shredding Sad.

dd will have to get me motivated tomorrow, football is cancelled so I promised we would do it in thye morning. Hmm

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/01/2011 23:21

I didn't get round to the shred today so am going to try L2 tomorrow and maybe attempt her Burn Fat Boost Metabolism too.

MyBrilliantCareer · 14/01/2011 23:44

No shred from me - Bikram yoga instead.

Am going to try it 3 times per week with more focus on running instead.

And thinking about joining Slimming World this week. I've not lost any weight Sad

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 23:47

mbc how is the bikram yoga going?

i have not had my yoga dvd yet. arghhh as i was really looking forward to getting it.

OP posts:
MyBrilliantCareer · 14/01/2011 23:56

It's ok. Only doing it once a week - it's hard work (very hot) but today I was more gentle with myself and more focussed therefore didn't need to sit down through any of it.

I have sciatica, which is aggravated when I run (yes, I know, but I like distance running!) - the physio thinks with a gentle ease into running I should be ok. The yoga has made my lower back ache tonight, but I think in a good way iykwim?

For the rest - my arms and back feel so much less tight, which is from the shredding (most likely the stretching) and the yoga combined. I can touch my toes quite easily now which I couldn't do a month ago Smile

I do like Bikram, but it's 40 degrees C which is no laughing matter. Maybe you could do one or two classes (hot or normal) while you wait for the dvd?

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 00:08

I cant get out to any classes. Sad

I have liked the walking down to push up in the level 2 of shredd I find it has alot of benifits for stretching out the whole body. I cant normally do push ups as I have a shpulder and elbow prob in the same arm so to much, but can manage these till the cows come home.

i do find the work on arms for squat thrusts ( not sure if right terms) but you know when you are in push up position and juming feet in and out etc on level 2 very hard on my elbow and shoulders.

Im hopeing yoga will make my core strenghth better at coping so my wight is not all in my arms.

well done on the running despite scyatica, I have suffered it in the past, so can understand. but I do think running cant be too hard on it once you have built a good stamina. at least in the long run it keeps your joints free and muscles strong to cope.

OP posts:
MyBrilliantCareer · 15/01/2011 00:11

Ah annoying you can't get out to classes.

I don't really understand Level 2. I don't feel like it's much of an arm/shoulder workout as they don't get sore at all. Very difficult in terms of cardio though with all those squat thrusts and jumping about. The last set hurts my arms but I cannot get my head around the final abs set. It doesn't feel like it's doing anything.

I'm thinking of trying out Level 3 soon Shock

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 00:18

It is more cardio and abs tho for sure.

I can manage it but cant understand why it makes me sweat so much, where as level 1 hurt alot and didnt sweat.

i moved up from 1 to 2 when I stopped hurting so my logic is to move up to level 3 when I stop sweating.

But saying that you sound far more physcally active than me. I dont drive so walk and cycle etc, so do alot but just not asd intensive as you seem to manage. mat=ybe do a level 1 and 2 then move upto a level 2 and 3 together if its not challenging enough.

OP posts:
tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 00:22

ah also final abs seems like a part of the warm down, I did find that in level 1 aswell abs helped me catch my breath and come down a bit.

I think that the benificial thing in her work outs are raising heart rate and lowering it again and raising and lowering. when I was a regualar gym user I found this was better as it pushes your body to have high energy spirts then bring heart rate down then up as the body has to work much harder.

belindarose · 15/01/2011 07:45

Right. First day today. As soon as DH gets up to take DD away (upstairs to get dressed- takes him at least 20 minutes). Dreading it really as don't know how it'll affect my dodgy hip (cartiledge tear). We'll see. I'll be back to tell you how I got on soon!

notyummy · 15/01/2011 08:06

Lady- good luck with attempting the shred AND burn fat boost metabolism!!! I would term myself pretty fit and did the Burn Fat yesterday. Bits of it are really hard!

Mybrilliantcareer- When you are doing the twisting plank things, make sure you are moving your hips so you are tilting your whole body to the side and having to hold it there momentarily in the plank. Hard to describe, but when I focussed on doing this k found the twisting plank more intense- it shouldn't be just about the leg movement.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/01/2011 08:42

I watched it on Wednesday night and thought it was quite a mix - some bits look hard and others ok so thought would give it a go for a bit of variety.

The instructions say for beginners to just do as much of it as you can and build up.

My knees are still hurting and I have had mild backache since the beginning really - not too sure what to do about that tbh. Confused
Both seem to be worse for having a day off.

notyummy · 15/01/2011 08:46

It's perfectly doable....., just not sure about doing it as well as a shred. It takes about 45 mins. When I do 2 shreds back to back it would probably take less time.

FoundWanting · 15/01/2011 08:54

Did my first shred yesterday evening and I can really feel it this morning, especially in my arms.

Managed to keep up all the way through, and wasn't actually sick. Could have done without an audience though.

"What are you doing?"

"...puff...Ex...groan...er...pant...cis...puff...ing."

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/01/2011 08:55

I won't shred then. Sorted. :)

I have been reading about this knee pain and it's from 'overuse'. I need to rest it until the microscopic tears have healed before submitting it to the hard activity again - doesn't give an idea of how long that takes.

I can use my stepper now my calf is better and will have a look at Burn/Boost and just do something else for the jumping stuff. Think that'll work?

McDreamy · 15/01/2011 09:01

Bought the Shred a few weeks ago, it's still in it's wrapper, I guess there's more too it than just owning it then? Wink Might be brave and have a look at it today! Can I join you ladies for some moral support?

MyBrilliantCareer · 15/01/2011 09:21

Of course you can McDreamy. If you've read through you've realised that even the most enthusiastic of us have our down days...

Congrats to everyone who's just starting!

Notyummy - thanks. I'll try that. It's just after the cardio before I can barely breathe Blush and so it seems too easy by comparison

MyBrilliantCareer · 15/01/2011 09:22

Ladyoftheflowers could you do a walk or something instead, to stay in the habit of 'something every day'?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/01/2011 09:44

Yes, think I will have to.

Idiot here just tried Burn/Boost. Hmm

Okay until I got to the 180s and now my knee is very angry indeed. :(

Nothing popped or cracked or anything but am in a fair amount of pain - not sure what I'm going to do do. :(

I am really angry with myself tbh for getting so overweight and stupidly thinking I could just start exercising again at this level, but when Gillian is going on about 400lb people doing jumping jacks and you ARE capable of working out hard.... not saying it's her fault but I think I should have listened to myself first.

I can't afford to go swimming plus I don't fancy baring all. Will use the step machine for a few days and hang my shred hat up until my knee improves - am really gutted. :( :(

falsemessageoflethargy · 15/01/2011 09:44

MBC - my dh watched me doing that abs move and said it was easy because my body wasnt straight - ie it was arched in the middle and so I wasnt in a proper plank pose - if you're in a proper pilates plank its hard to hold let alone do the twisting. I dont think she explains it very well - its not a push-up position.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 15/01/2011 10:44

Ladyoftheflowers if your knee is hurting that much I would lay of the stepper as well as that still puts quite a load onto your knee joint. Actually I would put some of the blame on Gillian - she might have 400lb people doing jumping jacks but they are under the eye of a personal trainer and, in the case of the Biggest Loser, medical supervision. There IS a modification for the jumping jacks and she should have shown it.

mcdreamy welcome!

belinda have you had your hip checked out first?

A minute of the final ab section should have your stomach muscles SCREAMING in agony, if not check positioning (difficult sometimes with no mirrors in most peoples living rooms!). I always find that actually concentrating on what the stomach muscles are doing helps in a way doing the same with a bicep curl wouldn't, really focuses you.

No shred for me, slight hangover and off for dim sum in London for lunch - yum! Have a good weekend everyone.
