I'm one of the fortunate ones prescribed mounjaro by the NHS to treat diabetes. It is very effective for that, my blood sugar is now back in the normal range. Losing weight is a side effect (and a very welcome one for me).

AmberLime · 20/08/2026 08:52

@GnomeDePlume does Mounjaro control your diabetes because it causes weight loss? Or would the diabetes be controlled by Mounjaro even if there was no weight loss?

GnomeDePlume · 20/08/2026 09:41

@AmberLime it helps regulate blood sugar by helping your body to produce more insulin. It also reduces the amount of glucose your liver produces. The weightloss is a side effect.

Not everyone on mounjaro for T2 diabetes loses weight. Not everyone with T2 diabetes needs to lose weight.

A lot of people with T2 diabetes are overweight but that doesnt mean the weight caused the diabetes. T2 Diabetes means your pancreas doesnt work properly. A lot of the excess blood sugar gets laid down as fat.

TragicMuse · 20/08/2026 10:57

Yes, I’ve seen a bit of recent debate that appears to debunk the thinking that being overweight is the cause of Type 2. And that pre-diabetic isn’t really a thing.

I’m not an endocrinologist so I don’t know. But the MJ and/or the significant weight loss has reduced my blood sugar to normal range. And I’m pleased about that.

Theringcycle · 20/08/2026 11:34

@GnomeDePlume have you been able to stay on mounjaro long-term for diabetes? I have been on it for 6 months and it’s completely transformed my blood sugar but at my review this week I was described as “over-controlled” with my hba1c of 43 and that they would be considering whether to remove Mounjaro - they’ve now said I can stay on it for the next 3 months and then there’ll be another blood test and review but I thought this was treatment for a chronic condition. My blood sugars are surely controlled because of Mounjaro and it’s not like a broken leg that stays fixed once it’s been treated.

Theringcycle · 20/08/2026 11:36

Incidentally although I have lost weight I noticed a really quick reduction in thirst (a symptom of too-high sugars) within a week of starting mounjaro and before I’d lost significant weight.

Weigh in and jab day

SW 140kg BMI 54.7
CW 88.4kg BMI 34.5
GW 63kg BMI 24.6

13 stone 13lbs in old money. A loss of 3lbs in the week

That's impressive!

I don't know a huge amount about diabetes, but I do know that there are a significant number of women who are very healthy weights, with no other risk factors such as ethnicity or family history, who develop diabetes in pregnancy. This then gives them a lifetime risk for T2 of about 50%. Weight is obviously a risk factor, but not all people with T2 are overweight/obese, and not all obese people will get T2 (I had a BMI of 51 and an HbA1C of 32).

GnomeDePlume · 20/08/2026 12:13

@Theringcycle I'm hoping to be on mounjaro or one of its successors permanently. My view is that my diabetes is managed not cured. I was taken off metformin a few months ago but I'm hoping to stay on mounjaro.

Getting my blood sugar under control has made a huge change in my life. I was plagued by a lot of the 'minor' irritants of diabetes: near constant thrush, skin tags, weird scaly skin on my legs. These have all cleared up.

Theringcycle · 20/08/2026 12:57

@GnomeDePlume thanks for the response - that’s exactly my view too, managed not cured, and Mounjaro is clearly very effective for me (far more so than my pre-existing regime of metformin plus dapagaflozin). The person who did my review (clinical pharmacist) said that mounjaro would probably be the first thing they remove. but why not remove metformin as they did for you!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 20/08/2026 13:25

I had an initial bmi of 50 and my blood tests then and 6 months in were 35.75 and 35.08 (but raised Ast/ggt/alt and high )

Over a year since and haven't had any blood tests so no idea where I'm at now (I'd love to!) But another one who didnt have diabetes.

I'm fascinated about how its worked in those of us with so much to lose though as although I wasn't diagnosed with anything (relevant) presumably the insulin/inflammatuon/whatever else wasn't right in my body and it wasn't doing what it should.

I'm still concerned by those at healthy bmi (or nearish) starting and taking this as I do think its can fuel disordered eating and body image. We're having to look at this long term and have time to reflect on whole diet.

My daughter's friend"s dance school has instructors openly on it and its clearly an issue and the main owner is too weak now to lift the smaller kids...
The friend is leaving after years (not just this issue but its one of them)

Janie934 · 20/08/2026 14:39

Weigh and jab day for me and I've now lost 13 stone exactly!

When I started I never thought I'd get this far. Only 2 stone 3 pounds to go to get to bmi of 24.9.

SW 26st 9pounds
CW 13st 9pounds
GW 11st 6pounds

The medication I'm on for my cancer treatment is making me super tired but luckily isn't affecting my weight (side effects can include increased appetite and weight gain).

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 20/08/2026 14:45

@Janie934 that's amazing - another 4.5 lbs and you'll have lost exactly half of what you started at, that is such a huge milestone!

PearlsTeapot · 20/08/2026 15:16

Weigh day and I've lost a pound! I'm thrilled, especially as I ate a whole tub of Celebrations over the weekend. What a thrill it is to see '14' on the screen.

@Janie934 what an amazing achievement, so close to having lost half your body weight! You must feel incredible.

I bought size 18 jeans for my new work. I can't believe it. They're from Cotton Traders, so very generous sizing, but I think I might even need to go and get the 16 before long. The days of buying and squeezing into size 24 clothes seems long behind me now. At work yesterday my manager came up to me and said "here's your work shirt" and I opened it and it was a L. I immediately thought well there's no way that will fit me and it'll be super embarrassing to tell her. But off I went to try it on anyway and not only does it fit, it's nice and loose! I'm so happy to feel normal and be seen as normal by others.

@PearlsTeapot I'm glad the new job is going well.

Most stores seem to stock up to an 18 which makes shopping so much easier now you're out of the size 20s....although I do wonder if Ive swapped the dopamine hit of food for the dopamine hit of shopping (though the latter is definitely better for my health if not my bank account).

Next mini goal is 50% of body weight lost - probably get there by mid-Sept at this rate.

Theringcycle · 20/08/2026 18:29

Great stuff @Janie934 !

@PearlsTeapot im currently a 20 down from a 24 (I don’t really get how my body works because I once lost more than this and went down only 1 size) and I am both pleased and dismayed at the increased clothing options at a 20 and they must be so much greater at an 18. (I have a pair of size 18 trousers that I try on every couple of weeks and they are now at the “can go on but can’t do up” stage but I was at that stage with a 20 not that long ago). Pleased because I’ve rediscovered an interest and love in clothes rather than body-coverage, and dismayed because I didn’t have these options when I was at the larger size. I’ve pretty much been out of the fashion game forever despite loving patterns, textures, shapes, colours, except for limited choices for my whole life so it’s incredible to now find things that I love and not just because they fit! Thank heavens for Vinted in opening up so many new clothes for me without busting the budget.

Springflowers2 · 20/08/2026 18:36

@AmberLime thankyou for taking the time to type that out ,it's very kind of you xx

Fffreeeeezing · 20/08/2026 20:07

So I don’t really have any decent ‘before’ photos, or current ones to be fair, I know a lot of us are lacking in before photos and my MJ provider didn’t ask for photos at the start (or ever for that matter). But this is my attempt at a before and during. The first taken about a week before I started in March 25 and the second about half an hour ago. It just made me smile when I noticed the shadow and realised I had the perfect before pic to go with it 😂

That’s great @Fffreeeeezing !

PearlsTeapot · 21/08/2026 19:24

Love that @Fffreeeeezing it says it all!

I've mentioned before my Starbucks habit, I'm wasting all my slimming world treats on my coffees so today I tried an americano with oat milk and sugar free syrup. It was disgusting! So synthetic. I'll have to stick to my usual, haha.

user593 · 21/08/2026 19:24

Checking in as I haven’t posted here for a while. I hit 50.5kg lost this week 🥳, I’m also now under 100kg (SW 147.6kg), and my GP has halved my blood pressure medication which I’m really pleased about. I still can’t get MJ on the NHS though, not sick enough, which is annoying but I’m hoping to be finished by the end of the year anyway and then a maintenance dose will be cheaper at least. Comfortably in a size 18 now and looking forward to getting into a size 16 soon.

I used to love a mocha from Starbucks but MJ combined with the fact they’re now over £5 (!) has helped me kick the habit 😅 Luckily we have a good coffee machine at home (and I’ve discovered Sweet Freedom Choc Shot Brownie which is great for a homemade mocha!).

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 21/08/2026 20:33

Weigh in today and week 7 at this weight! Have jabbed 12mg (after 2 weeks of 10 and 2 weeks of 11 - and many weeks of 9.5ish) in hope it might shift something.

I did though go into A Real Shop and tried a dress on I reallyliked. I'm worried it might be a bit frumpy (seasalt) but I love the pattern and lovedthat I could try it on!

I tried some trousers in White stuff (again not even the biggest size!) but I am more clearlydisporportioned in trousers - Mystomach and stomach loose skin is quite obvious whereas my top is neater. So it will be dresses or tunics for a while longer!

I am tired today.

Week 2 of not calorie counting and I have lost 1.2kg! This is such a revelation for me, it feels so freeing! I've been eating pretty much what I was eating when I was calorie counting, so not totally surprising, but it's still amazing to me that I can lose weight without obsessing about it. That said, I am very conscious that this might not work forever - even just from the people on this thread that are struggling - and so I need to keep an eye on things and not be afraid to change it up if it stops working.

Well this week I hit a loss of 40% of my starting weight which feels like a milestone. I’m also sitting on precisely 30.0 BMI, so hoping to ‘only’ be overweight in the next week or so!

I’ve finally also been able to get into some size 16 trousers, feels like it’s taken so long but I guess that’s my body shape, always had larger hips and thighs plus the residual stomach doesn’t help. I’m in a 12-14 in tops now.

I've been having a massive wardrobe clear out, got out all my old work clothes which I thought I wore last time I was a similar weight but they are all massive on the waist so I’ll have a nice clear wardrobe and may also hit some real shops for a couple of treats.
