A supportive, idea-sharing thread for those with more than 5 stone/30kg to lose. We're a mixture of newbies, nearly theres, there and maintaining and we know what it's like to have what can seem like a mountain to climb - but we also know we can do it!

Nothing is off topic except referral codes 😊

I got a lot of leg cramps in bursts and then not fir a while. It is now 3am, the dreaded cursed mj hour of wakening. @MooBaggage I know you do 3am, anyone else?

Yep I have become a 3am -er.
I assumed perimenopause symptoms and due to start HRT imminently (assume have to wait for this period to begin first) so hope it will help.

What works for you?

Timetofindme · 27/02/2026 08:30

For the early moring wakers I have news ....

Studies are showing that 🥝🥝 gives you a massive dose of selenium which supports good sleep.

So save you bowl boosting 🥝🥝 as a snack to take an hour before bedtime & see if things improve.

I too got those £3 golden kiwis from Lidl but they are still too hard to eat

Ordering my kiwis now!

I woke up at 4am with random itches. Awake for ages but forced myself to stay in bed and eventually went back to sleep until nearly 10, which of course isn’t good for my day.

Pretty sure this is menopause symptoms.

I know two women who started getting up very early around this phase of menopause. They get a lot of work done, but I don’t think it has been at all good for their health. So I’m not giving in to it.

RobinEllacotStrike · 27/02/2026 14:09

@ShrankLastWinter I also had many strange itches in peri/meno.

Blood tests showed I was deficient B12 and supplementing with B12 quickly solved the itches. Its a cheap fix to try.

Well, hello fellow early risers - quite reassuring to see a few of you experiencing the same. My first wake up is usually 2am (and I can be up for an hour at this time) and then I am up for the day between 4:30am and 5am. DH is a nightshift manager, so I am able to sit up in bed and read, which still feels like I am resting, but I cannot seem to stop myself waking at night. I've recently started taking magnesium supplements, so hoping that has a positive effect.

SW: 15st 5.5lb
CW: 11st 1.5lb
Loss: 60lb
Current BMI: 27.55
Target Weight 1: 12st 1lb (overweight BMI) - Achieved!
Target Weight 2: 10st 1lb (healthy BMI)
Target Weight 3: 9st 5.5lb (6st loss)
Final Target: 8st 8lb - 9st 1lb (I think...)

As I said last week, my next mini target is seeing a new 'big' number on the scale, so being 10st something, which I was aiming for by the end of March. I appear to be having a bit of an acceleration in weight loss at the minute, so I should hit that target far sooner.

Now the days are getting longer and it's slowly warming up, I'm feeling quite motivated. It helps that I seem to be experiencing quite the whoosh of weight loss at the moment, but I am being very disciplined - I haven't touched a drop of alcohol since October and junk food is strictly off limits too. But I don't feel like I am denying myself either - I've not actually wanted to drink or eat crap. I was discussing this with DH who is also on MJ and he thinks some of it is the high cost we are paying for the WLI - it would feel like an utter waste of money to spend the best part of £5-600 per month between us to then throw it down the drain by not changing our eating habits, and I think he has a point. The money element is definitely a motivating factor.

@Timetofindme I have a Numan code, I'll PM you 😊

ShrankLastWinter · 28/02/2026 10:51

@Bunnyjo have you tried slow release melatonin? It’s keeping me together at the moment. A few unpleasant dreams but only for the first week and I’m getting much more sleep.

Bunnyjo · 28/02/2026 10:56

@ShrankLastWinter I haven’t actually, but will look into it, thank you 😊

Zebracat · 28/02/2026 11:02

Interesting sleep patterns discussion. I’ve always struggled to get to sleep, but that’s changed lately and I too often wake around 4.
Im a bit fed up today. Took my second15 ml injection a week ago, having lost a kilo in the first week, and I've gained 200 grams. I have got a bad bout of sciatica, and I just can’t move much.I’ve found some stretches on YouTube to try. I hope they help.

QueenOfHiraeth · 28/02/2026 11:36

@Bunnyjo I do sympathise with the sleep issues as I suffer too but my issue is not waking, it is not falling asleep. I can still be awake at 4 having gone to bed hours earlier. I try to read and rest but it can be frustrating.
Just throwing in a different viewpoint on sleep issues though from a clinical point. As we all get older, we do naturally need less sleep and that change often coincides with peri/menopause. One of my roles many years ago was in care of the elderly and we had lots of issues with care homes requesting sleeping tablets as their patients would not go to bed and sleep for 8 hours which is what we are all told is needed. We often had a battle as the homes wanted the convenience of quiet nights with few staff needed but, as long as the sleep was normal for that patient and not affecting their health, we tried to educate that it was OK.
I'm trying to educate myself that it is OK but not sure if I am listening to my own professional advice Grin but, technically, it is only a problem if you are struggling to function on low sleep

I wish I could find some of your self-discipline. I am still struggling to get back on the wagon since Christmas despite MJ!

Bunnyjo · 28/02/2026 12:04

I hope you feel better soon @Zebracat, sciatica is so debilitating. Concentrate on getting better first, then you will have the energy to focus on weight loss.

I agree, @QueenOfHiraeth. I wondered if I was perimenopausal (I am 47 after all), but recent blood tests suggest not. My lovely mum laughed when I told her and said if I was anything like her I had a good few years to go - she was 55 when she started feeling menopause symptoms and 58 when she finally came out the other side.

I do think we naturally need less sleep as we get older - or maybe less sleep in single blocks - my mum sleeps for about 5-6 hours a night, but at 73, she does enjoy her daily hour or so snooze on the sofa. My dad is similar, 6 hours on a night and a daily nap in his favourite chair!

I'm averaging around 5-6 hours sleep myself and, in truth, it isn't affecting me much - yes, I sometimes feel tired, but who doesn't? Stressful job, home to run, two teenagers (1 at uni) and I also volunteer, so maybe I am feeling justifiably tired. I'm usually in bed by 10pm, so tried going to bed later for a few weeks, however it made things worse - I still woke at the same times! Honestly, it's like an internal alarm clock that I cannot find the off button to.

Maybe I am just in the wrong timezone and I'd be better off in southern Europe...

QueenOfHiraeth · 28/02/2026 18:24

@Bunnyjo Blood tests are notoriously unreliable to the point that GPs are told they should not use them to diagnose (or not diagnose!) menopause so you can safely ignore those, diagnosis should be based just on symptoms and elimination of other possible issues. Perimenopause can be up to 10 years before cessation of periods but it is all very nebulous to pin down. Anyhow, as long as you are not dying on your feet with tiredness it's, hopefully, manageable (at least that's what I tell myself!)

Reginaphalangeeeee · 01/03/2026 23:16

@Timetofindme I sent it to you. Good luck!!!

Reginaphalangeeeee · 01/03/2026 23:21

So I had x2 NSV
Trouser feel looser & younger daughter said I was ‘sagging’ which I found out means trousers hanging low thank goodness as nearly cried my eyes out.

Secondly my 12 year old picked me up! She is strong and it was buried but my goodness, nobody has picked me up, like forever!

Was thinkingsxales may show a drop. Waited for start of period next day (normally I hold 1-2 KG week or so before period) so weight adjusted… i’m 1.5 kg up still!!!
Went to the doctors to get started with HRT. They weighted me and I was 4 kg heavier there! I am sure they scales must be wrong but how annoying those things upset me so much!

MooBaggage · 02/03/2026 09:25

@Reginaphalangeeeee I had exactly the same experience a few weeks ago re: being weighed at the doctor's - it was the afternoon, with my clothes on (including big heavy stompy boots!) and I was 11lb heavier! I was soooo cross - wanted to show them my smart scale app which showed my weight that morning!

I stomped home and immediately weighed myself on my scales, fully clothed - convinced their scales must be wrong, but no, I was indeed 11lb heavier 🙄

So - just ignore any other weight than the one first thing in the morning with no clothes on - otherwise we'll go completely bonkers with it all!

Great 'sagging' NSV though - hold on to the victories...! 😍💪

I have finally had a mini woosh and am down to 13.5 stones having started at 19, hooray! I have of course been telling anyone that knew I was doing it that I have lost 5.5 stones, so the scales now totally reflect that. I have also started wearing platform doc martens (silver sparkly ones which are epic) but they have the side effect of making me taller. reminds me of a book a friend had entitled 100 ways to make your bum look smaller. Top tip was to carry a very large handbag !!!

Onwards and downwards all

GiveMeWordGames · 03/03/2026 10:40

Had a bit of a whoosh the last few days after bobbing up and down around 11st 7 for a week or two, and came in at 11st 4.75 this morning. That's 0.75lb away from goal and a 6st loss. I'm pleased because it shows I've still been able to lose from my first two 7.5 jabs after coming down from 10mg.

It would be nice and neat/poetic if I hit that 6st goal for my birthday on Friday, which is the 6th😄 but I don't expect that to happen. I should absolutely be there for my mounjversary near the end of March though.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 03/03/2026 13:21

That sounds great @GiveMeWordGames
I took my last 10mg jab yesterday as I have a 7.5mg pen stash that I need to start using but I still have 4lbs to shift to reach my healthy BMI. If I don’t lose anything then I will buy another couple of 10mg when the Easter offers appear.

Reginaphalangeeeee · 04/03/2026 09:42

thanks @MooBaggage
Yes the PMT weight finally off. Not sure if HRT starting will lead to a little gain. Anyone else found that?
I do have a bit of a headache but also popped my MJ from 8mg to 9mg so could be that.
Def have a bit more suppression.

In other good news, the suns out and it it keeping up with my CT5K. I’m doing it much slower than most I am sure 🐌
And usually only 2 runs a week. But I am doing it! Last time was in lockdown I ran. I piled on 4-5 stone over the 5 years after that.
☹️

QueenOfHiraeth · 04/03/2026 11:55

@Reginaphalangeeeee I never took HRT personally as I have reacted badly to hormones in the past but my experience via work was that weight gain was very variable; some gained a bit, some stayed the same and only a few gained more than expected. Louise Newson claimed at one point that women lost weight but, I think, she then clarified it with "if they feel better, less tired, etc so eat better and are able to exercise more". I think, as you are already aiming to eat well and exercise more you will be well placed for good results with it hopefully.
I was only commenting to someone recently that, in my view, HRT and MJ have a lot in common. Neither are a magic wand, both work best alongside healthy lifestyle measures and both seem to bring out very strong opinions in both users and non-users, ranging from outright condemnation and scaremongering to the almost evangelical!
