Take care of yourself @KentishMama shingles can get nasty

KentishMama · 07/12/2025 07:37

Thanks all! I feel okay in myself overall, just have this weird nerve pain thing on one side. I hope it'll pass quickly.

RayonSunrise · 07/12/2025 10:39

So sorry to hear you have shingles, @KentishMama. Hope you recover soon. 💐

On a related note - I saw an article yesterday about how the there’s evidence building that the shingles vaccine may be connected to protecting women from dementia. I was reading Dr Jen Gunter’s Substack on it (she is great for all things on the science of women’s health). Getting the shingles vaccine here is not cheap - around £400 altogether - but her article has certainly made me ponder it!

Not a bad idea, actually. I wonder if I can get it on the NHS as I'm on just about every high risk list... Or does having shingles now give me immunity in future?

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 07/12/2025 12:08

Ordered from Bolt on Friday. Delivered by Royal Mail this morning. Came in the usual puffin packaging but in a small cardboard box.

So worth considering if you want a first order discount. If you have already used them I have a referral code 🙄 but not sure if that works with a returning customer.

Hi death jabbing friends!

What a week. Two work Christmas events - much easier to manage on death jabs though. I enjoyed the lovely food, but felt no urge to overdo it. However, have been feeling a bit off... Went to see my GP yesterday and boom! SHINGLES. I don't have time for this, and it's bloody annoying/painful. It also impacts my fitness regime and I'm praaaaaaying that I'm better in time for our holiday at end of next week...

In better news, I bought a pair of Levi's in a 29 inch waist. That cheered me up no end.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

so sorry to read this - hope you are feeling better this week?

Fab news on the Levi’s tho 🥰

Gosh that is interesting. All of our parents had dementia at the end. It is death by a thousand paper cuts for the family 🥲

I haven’t had a flu jab this year as I’m no longer a carer so not in a priority group. I need to get on that as there is a particularly nasty strain doing the rounds.

I think you can contract shingles more than once? Might be worth asking the GP tho.

I might take you up on that for my next pen?

anyone else get an email from Oushk requiring a video call to verify your weight? Seems strange to get it after they sent the meds?

I'll reach out to the GP once I'm over this. Read up on it quickly and it's recommended to wait a while after an active infection until you vaccinate anyway.

I'm definitely worse than I was at the end of last week. More nerve pain. But the rash hasn't increased, or anything like that. Oh well, I guess I'll wait it out.

jay55 · 08/12/2025 08:47

@KentishMamahope the shingles fuck the fuck off shortly.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 08/12/2025 11:17

Flu jabs cost about £16 at Tesco. I used to get it for free for a few years with my mahoosive BMI, prior to that work paid. Now I am merely overweight and no longer working I have had to pay.

I didn’t get the Covid jab which was £90.

No - my last email from them was about the requirement for them to hold a photo of each patient’s ID from January, even if they’ve already seen it on a video. Looks like hey are scaling & trying to keep a grip on who they’re prescribing to at the same time.

Are the other pharmacies taking these measures? I have not really kept on top of comparisons (except for what’s posted here!). I would be open to moving to a better maintenance plan but am wondering how easy it would be now I’m at such a clear maintenance BMI.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 08/12/2025 13:26

None will turn down the option to make money @RayonSunrise. I think just so long as you have a history of receiving prescriptions most pharmacies will take you on. I think the only exception will be if your BMI is too low. Oushk, I think, led the charge with the maintenance idea but I think the others are getting on board with it.

Happy new week skinny bitches!

Sorry to hear about the shingles @kentishmama That's rotten 😕

So the good news is i finally heard that i'm not being made redundant. Thank fuck for that! In other good news, I'm definitely over my stall/plateau /set point and my body is back to losing weight. On Saturday I was down to 10st 5lbs! 2lbs below target!

I went to a winter ball over the weekend and happily swanned around in my rented dress - went with a gold Queens of Archive number instead of the Vampire's Wife. Lots of compliments and DH reckoned that I should have rented the size small not the medium! So that was a nice wee ego boost.

Back to London this week with a few days tacked on at the end for some festive fun with my bestie. So now having a packing dilemna - how to fit outfits for 4 days, 3 nights, 2 office days, and 3 social functions into a carry on suitcase 😂

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 08/12/2025 16:51

Wowzer @SerenePeer triple winning klaxon for you ! Not being made redundant, breaking a stall and for being a glamour goddess

So happy for you regarding redundancy. It sounds like the planned festivities are just the ticket to blow off steam. Obviously now you have skinny bitch sized clothes, you can fit everything into hand luggage 😉

And 🥳 for the continued weight loss! Fantastic! The queens of archive dress sounds fabulous.

Enjoy London, it’s got its best hat on at the moment 🥰

I’m going to look at Bolt I think if they are ok to prescribe for my BMI. Seems like less hassle tbh.

Checking in. First 10mg jab this morning. Feeling pretty good. Definitely much less food noise. No idea what the scales picture is as haven't weighed in for ages but will tiptoe on this week.

Primitivo · 10/12/2025 10:32

RayonSunrise · 04/12/2025 08:29

Can only echo Mounjaropen’s comment about habitual exercise and good nutritional habits. We all want things to improve quickly, but most good things are achieved sustainably over time.

Speaking of which - I can now really feel all my hair regrowth when I run my fingers along my scalp! While it’s annoying to see all the little baby hairs poking up when I’m in strong light, I know it’s temporary on the way to getting all my hair back!

Was out for my team Christmas lunch yesterday and enjoyed a bit of culinary indulgence (carbs, fats, meat, booze!), which has lead to the scale creeping upwards slightly this morning. I have NO concerns about this - yesterday’s scale check indicated I may be losing weight still so at this rate I really do have leeway for a bit of seasonal indulgence.

Over the past few months I’ve rediscovered the Kibbe system, found it really useful, then spent too much time on Reddit and now find it intensely irritating. Has anyone else had this experience?

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm a long time lurker here, November 24 starter. Had great success losing over the last year. Got to summer feeling wonderful but also a bit bald! So I stopped altogether. Hair loss slowed back to normal and weight piled back on... I've now started jabbing again, as fat took over from bald as the main concern! But wondering what those of you who can feel hair returning have done? Do you think it's cyclical and has settled down, or are you throwing everything at it and convinced that's made a difference?

Goldleafcat · 10/12/2025 10:50

Thank you for the info on the kibbe system @RayonSunrise . It’s interesting. I’m still adjusting to whatever my new shape is so just trying to figure out what works and doesn’t, might look into further in the new year.

Fabulous news @SerenePeer that’s such a relief and especially at this time of year.

Sorry to hear you’re not well @KentishMama hope it’s starting to lift.

Hi @Primitivo ! Hair loss… mine has finally gone back to manageable / normal levels (and it never became noticeable to others), I have however thrown a few different things at the situation so it’s difficult to know why it’s settled down / improved. One key thing which I suspect is helping is oral minoxidil - I started it in the summer. I’m only on a tiny dose of 0.5mg but after reading about potential side effects I’m glad of that and won’t go any higher (unless my hair goes dreadful again!). No side effects which has been good. I’m also using nioxin shampoo, conditioner and the treatment mousse (the system) but interchanging with normal shampoo and conditioner from time to time as I find the nioxin quite drying (not sure the conditioner is that great as a conditioner tbh!). The minoxidil is through Hair and Me. You can also just buy the topical stuff on Amazon (apparently just buy the men’s one - it’s cheaper and the same / better!). If I stop the oral I might try the topical, but be warned it’s toxic to pets.

Good luck with finding a solution!

Primitivo · 10/12/2025 11:06

Thanks @Goldleafcat! Minoxidil does sound like it gives properly good results. Unfortunately I've got high blood pressure (this was my motivation to start WLIs and how I qualified at BMI 27) so I think it's not straightforward adding another hypertensive med... all the insta menopause/WLI doctors I follow seem to be taking oral minoxidil. So I think it's definitely the way to go if you're happy to medicate long term and don't have any BP concerns. Do you have a long term strategy to stay on it or playing it by ear?

RayonSunrise · 10/12/2025 11:16

@Primitivo, I have also thrown a few things at the hair loss issue so it’s difficult to pinpoint what’s helped most. I’ve not gone for minoxidil at all though.

I suspect thr biggest factor for me has been cutting down my Mounjaro dose (I went up to 10mg at one point, have been back down to 7.5mg over the past 3 months and am now stretching out time between jabs to taper off). I lost weight more slowly, but I also stopped losing hair!

I’ve also been taking collagen and rubbing diluted rosemary oil into my scalp a couple times a week, which are both quite inexpensive/low side effect experiments.
