This isn't the most positive of stories, but I thought I'd share because it's a good lesson. A good friend spent at least a year on Wegovy, and shifted a really good amount of weight, going from a BMI of 32 to 22. She's been off it now for about 6 months, and I've only seen her once in that time, because life is busy. I saw her for dinner last night, and she was really down - she's put more than half of it back on in that 6 months, so is gaining at a significantly faster rate than she lost :(
We talked a lot last night about what's going wrong, and she's really clear (also kicking herself). She's always had a very carb heavy, sugar heavy diet - a real sweet tooth and used to eat really large portions of it. I think a lot of us have talked about needing to make significant lifestyle changes whilst on MJ - using the "space" MJ creates to re-train eating habits.
That's exactly what she didn't do. She relied really heavily on the food suppression to just eat less of what she used to, without any real lifestyle changes. Which is fine - someone said earlier that food isn't a moral choice, and that's true. What she's really struggled with is not over eating now that the food suppression has gone, and her portion sizes are back up to what they used to be, hence the weight gain. She's finding it hard not to crave that "full" feeling - whether it's delivered through WLIs or through large portion sizes. And never really added exercise in, so doesn't have that habit ingrained now.
Things she said wishes she'd done differently. Paid more attention to nutritional value of what she's eating and macros. Used the time to build an exercise routine that is now habitual. And really importantly - she went cold turkey rather than titrating down, which she now thinks was a mistake. She said it only took 4 weeks for any food suppression effect to wear off completely, and once that happened, she couldn't find a way to manage the desire for feeling, as she put it, "as stuffed as the Christmas Turkey". She thinks if she had titrated down, she might have had a better chance of slowly adjusting to not feeling like that.
So she's going to try and restart, either on Wegovy or MJ, not sure if anyone will accept her given it's been 6 months, but she'll give it a go. And focus on actual food composition and exercise in that time. I felt really sorry for her - she's not wealthy and this was a huge investment for her. I hope it goes better for her this time.
