Big price increases?

Anyone else seen this chatter about massive price increases announced for MJ (to pharmacies) in the last hour or so?

Very concerning as it looks like it could double the cost of some of the doses. I'll try to find the copy of the letter sent out...

But it won’t. He should focus on his own country instead of screwing thingd for the rest of us.

Or better still, just drop dead. Why is it that the nastiest, thickest people, seem to lead the longest and happiest lives?

Thomasthe · 14/08/2025 22:31

Apologies if this has been discussed. Has anyone managed to put through on order of 2 or 3 pens from their provider? I’m with med express and can’t re-order until 22nd of August anyway 🙈 worried stock will be gone by then

Gertieblue · 14/08/2025 22:31

This is what I'm telling myself as well. I will use what I've got, and then try to maintain. If my BMI reaches 27 again (I have high blood pressure) then I will try Wegovy, I think, and hope for the best.

Is the criteria 27 with an existing condition the same as MJ, does anyone know?

Perfectly happy to get grief from pointing out the staggeringly pointless, and potentially harmful, posts by some posters.

In other news, I've just had a glance at the C.I.A website so I think I'm probably in with a shout at becoming the next Director of Homeland Security.

Which is nice.

😂😂😂

Why are people buying it privately if it's available on the NHS? Are they already slim?

Becsue I started long before the NHS started prescribing and reversed more than one of my conditions AND got my BMI below the NHS prescribing level so obviously they won’t give it to me now, but I would have qualified had I not started months ago.

I get mine from boots too. I accepted the inflated price (just!) because I can get the pen delivered to a local branch and collect on way home from work when needed. There’s no one at home to accept deliveries during the day, most other pharmacies all said home deliveries only, can’t be left anywhere as it needs refrigeration.
NO way will I be able to keep with MJ if Boots go up to £300-400 😱
I've only got about 10-12lbs to go…..but I’m a slow plodder so would be another 2-3 months yet. Was starting to think about reducing, but worried my loss would cease completely……..

Exactly, this is the thing…since Boots are already so much higher it would be hard surely for them to raise prices as much! I use them for similar reasons to you, I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Forgive my ignorance but will 3 pens keep ok?

This argument that private purchases cause a shortage for NHS patients is absurd. I've worked for a pharmaceuticals company (in contracts and tenders). The NHS negotiate directly with the pharmaceuticals manufacturer and agree a price to ring fence a bulk of stock. These are renewed periodically - the NHS are specific about the stock they need for that period of time and it's set aside. The pharmaceuticals companies would be in breach of their contract if they didn't do that so it just doesn't happen. That stock is held entirely separately to the rest of the stock so private purchases don't affect it in any way, shape or form. The stock is sent out from the factory directly to the relevant NHS Trust via cold-chain when the Trust asks for it. If NHS patients can't get their supply, it's because the NHS didn't ring fence enough and haven't re-ordered.

In the US because it is so massively unaffordable, unless you are very rich or have a prescription people use compounded semaglutide in place of the name drugs. They run at $150 a month vs the $1000+ for the real deal. The knock against them is that they aren't as well tested as the main drugs so there is a real risk taking them. It will be interesting to see if this comes to the UK market as an option. Personally, I've taken them and have seen real results. A lot of them are compounded by adding vitamin D or something to lessen nausea or something which is how they get around the rules here and can be sold.

US pharmacies were allowed to compound GLP drugs because the drugs were declared in shortage. The patent owners are trying to push back and declare the drugs no longer in shortage so that they can get compounding banned. If they are lowering the price a lot in the US the shortage might continue/resume.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 14/08/2025 22:35

Fuckers. They saw a chance to make more money and grabbed it. The thing that helps with medication costs in the UK is the NHS bargaining power. As more things are privately accessed, that will be eroded and we will end up with much more expensive medications.

lightcable · 14/08/2025 22:36

To qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS people need to meet this criteria and many obese people won't they may have one or two of these but not four of them or they may have them but just miss the BMI requirement.

"To qualify for Mounjaro (tirzepatide) on the NHS for weight management, individuals must have a BMI of 40 or greater, or 37.5 or greater for those of Black, Asian, and other minority ethnic groups, and have been diagnosed with at least four of the five following weight-related health conditions: type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and dyslipidemia."

It's quite a tight criteria.

As long as they are in date, if they are short dated then no. Unlikely they would be dated within 8 or so weeks though. I have always had months on mine.

As usual it sounds like a small group of scumbags ruining it for the majority, illegally exporting the stuff at a mark up.

There was an issue last year with short dates and the guidance was that it was safe to ignore the dates on the pens for a specific period of time, they said the dates were overly cautious?

I’m only sharing the official advice. Nothing to do with last year? If you have evidence against manufacturers guidelines please do share.

If people are concerned about money couldn't they just eat less? Or am I missing something about the MJ fad?

Since when was prescription medication a fad? And yes, you’re missing many years of research on obesity and the fact it’s much more complex than just eating less, but I think you know that.
