Big price increases?

CoverMeInMarmalade · 14/08/2025 11:45

Anyone else seen this chatter about massive price increases announced for MJ (to pharmacies) in the last hour or so?

Very concerning as it looks like it could double the cost of some of the doses. I'll try to find the copy of the letter sent out...

Everyone saying they plan to stretch their pens out to last 6-8 weeks instead of 4….

Is this safe? Will it still be effective? I thought it had to be used within 30 days of opening?

Iv been doing it for months. I order 15mg pens and take 10mg from it. Never had a issue and I haven't found it less effective.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 14/08/2025 18:45

Given what you were explaining about pricing before, @TheRealGoose, do you think the larger pharmacies' statements are just buying time while they attempt to negotiate their own deals? Whereas the smaller ones will be stuck with inflated prices?

doodleschnoodle · 14/08/2025 18:45

It’s still very raw and a changing landscape at the moment so there’s no point in panicking till we come out of the other side and see what it’s actually going to look like.

Unfortunately Oushk are out of stock on 12.5 and 15, but Hira did advise people to buy 3 at lower price before Sept 1 to save money. DH is only on 5 and has never got higher and that doesn’t seem as prone to shortages. He ordered 3 earlier as hoping those will be the last he needs for foreseeable.

For those worried about life off MJ, obviously it’s different for everyone, but I stopped MJ around April time. I’ve lost a further 5lbs and am maintaining fine, and I am not plagued by hunger or depression. The key for me I think has been adding exercise to pretty much every day as that gives me a leeway calorie wise to play with. And sticking to the same foods and lifestyle I did when on MJ. It’s by no means guaranteed that you will put on all the weight again. Believe in yourself and remember what you have learned. MJ is a tool, a fantastic tool, but you are the one doing the work.

DoubledTrouble · 14/08/2025 18:45

Does anyone know where is currently cheapest for buying mounjaro? My OH wants to start soon and if the price is going to increase it seems best to go with one of the cheaper of the legitimate suppliers.

Triumphofdiplomacy · 14/08/2025 18:46

Urgh my naturally slim, tall and willowy colleague will love this. She is angry that people take the drug as she’s afraid that people will be slimmer and therefore more attractive than her. She spits feathers every time she hears someone is taking it. I’m so gutted this is happening, it’s sorted my PCOS out a treat, I’ve lost 4 stone and I feel so well.

Why will we revert? This is catastrophising. You can buy a pen at a dose or two above your current dose and spread them out. If you're at 15mg already you can reduce your dose and make an extra effort to calorie count and stick to your calories and make a pen last 6 weeks instead of 4/5. And you can wait 6 months to a year and see when new drugs come on the market at a cheaper price point. There is no need for anyone to regain all the weight we have lost.

People buying bigger dose pens and making them last longer - does it not “go off” if the pen is opened and used for say 2 months rather than 1?

You're right, I hope, and thank you. It's difficult to keep things in perspective, but I'm off to have a cup of tea and calm down! You're positivity has made me feel better.

I’m disgusted it’s been done with such a short lead time. Should’ve been with minimum 3 months notice, or more. This is a drug that people are using, not something you just pick up when you feel like it - it needs consistency and planning.

Trump has given the pharmaceutical companies 60 days to make the price in the USA match the most favoured countries.

Moana987 · 14/08/2025 18:50

So how many pens are people stock piling?

Iv just ordered 3, from different pharmacies (1 has already been approved) and I already have 2 full pens and 3/4 of a pen here so I will have 5 to see me until the end and maintain.

Cucy · 14/08/2025 18:50

It was always short sighted to be on them long term but this is going to be a pain for those who had a plan and are half way though it.

If it was me, I would be ordering the lower dose and trying to drag this current dose out slightly longer.

If the price remains high or becomes unavailable, then the lower dose will help to wean people off it.
If the stock levels return, then people can choose to increase it again or stay on the lower dose.

It's safe as long as you follow proper hygiene protocols. It's effective anecdotally - the guidance on ozempic pens which are the same technology says 8 weeks so there isn't any logical reason why Mounjaro would stop working after 5 weeks when ozempic doesn't. It's a calculated risk. I've stretched my pens over 6 doses for a couple of months and the effectiveness seems to be consistent. That's 35 days/5 weeks after first use. I'm happy to try stretching it further by titrating down. If it's not as effective in the 7th week no harm done - it's just like having a little break in between pens and it will still have some effect, if not the maximum one.

Arraminta · 14/08/2025 18:51

SilenceInside · 14/08/2025 18:41

@Arraminta what tablet is that? Do you mean Orforglipron? That’s still in clinical trials and isn’t likely to be available by spring.

Yes. I've recently read that Eli Lilly are hoping to have it approved by Spring 2026. Obviously it will then have to be rolled out.

Also Pfizer have just successfully completed stage 2 trials of their tablet version of MJ, too. I expect they will be throwing everything at getting it through stage 3 and thence to market as fast as humanly possible.

I want a proper source. Not Reddit.

I received an email explaining this from Medexpress. I then googled it and found that all major UK Newpapers are covering it. The cost is much higher in the US and the gift that keeps on giving - Trump has put pressure on US companies to cut the cost of all drugs in the US by increasing the prices elsewhere.

DuckPuddledJemima · 14/08/2025 18:51

Why on earth would you think it's ok to 'be on it for life'
Completely defeats the objective of learning calorie control and proper nutrition whilst on it to reach your goal.
As a diabetic I am pleased it's going to be harder for the general public to get it. It's medicine for goodness sake. Even getting it with my GP I had to commit to scheduled blood tests and full health checks to keep me safe and healthy on it. Those wanting to take it for life because they can't learn some control is ridiculous

I've just responded to that in a post above 👆🏼
basically no, unofficially, but it's a calculated risk that you can take or not.

Yes, it’s medicine for the medical condition of obesity. You wouldn’t tell someone on blood pressure medication to just come off it and do some exercise or people taking antidepressants to stop them and just get some fresh air and do some meditating. Or maybe you would. Jesus Christ.

Why on earth would you think it's NOT ok to be on it for life? Why on earth would you come on a thread like this and say such pointlessly goady and rude crap? Nobody here cares what you think about our choices about our bodies and health needs. I certainly hope you're not type 2 diabetic and obese because if you are you're a massive hypocrite as well as being a cloth eared clod.

@DuckPuddledJemima
And how did managing or reversing your diabetes by 'life style' changes go for you? And aren't you the lucky one to be getting good oversight from your GP, yet you still begrudge private patients?

That's good to hear. There is a sub on Reddit for people coming off - often those in the US whose insurance just covers them for a set time. It is called "GLP Grad"

SilenceInside · 14/08/2025 18:57

@DuckPuddledJemima everyone with a private prescription qualified for it legitimately. The “general public” aren’t getting handed out to them. As a diabetic you will need different and additional monitoring than someone who is prescribed it for weight loss. That doesn’t mean that people like me with a private prescription are not being monitored in the way we should be.

And your prejudice against people who are obese is astonishing, but sadly familiar. We are obese, not thick, and it’s not a lack of education about calorie control or nutrition that’s the issue.

It takes some amount of bitterness to come onto a thread where people are genuinely worried about their health and future and spew shit like this when it’s not even anything to do with you. Have a day off, love.

So how much is Wegovy compare to MJ?
is that the plan then? Everyone who is on MJ privately in the U.K. and who cannot afford double price will move to Wegovy?

is it that much of a saving?

tbh Wegovy was not available when I started MJ so I didn’t really look into it……

anyone have any experience to share on pricing?
