Put on weight on mounjaro

Kellyklara · 12/07/2025 11:42

I have been on mounjaro for two months. 2.5mg.

I don't feel like I have been eating anymore than normal.

I have put ON five pounds. It is very annoying.

Are you in a calorie deficit? If you eat as your normally do, then you’ll gain or maintain weight. MJ is designed to make you less hungry and fuller for longer, making it easier to eat significantly less.

TheNinthLock · 12/07/2025 11:53

You can't just expect Mounjaro to do the heavy lifting, you need to cut calories and increase exercise. Mounjaro just makes it slightly easier to do that.

Edited to add: why did you stay on 2.5 for a second month if it was not working for you?

I think ive been eating less than i did before mounjaro.

For example today, I have just eaten strawberries for breakfast, and a soup for lunch.

I have cut calories and increased exercise.

I have still put on weight.

Are you tracking your calories? Because it seems unlikely you would gain wait if genuinely eating in a deficit.
You may have cut calories but still be consuming more than your body needs, hence lack of weight loss.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 12/07/2025 11:55

You say “I think”, so I would start logging everything.

and how much? You can eat strawberries and soup but if you’re eating too many of them you will still put on weight.

BabyCatFace · 12/07/2025 11:56

Are you tracking?
it's physically impossible to gain weight in a calorie deficit so if you've gained weight then you aren't in a deficit.
are you feeling appetite suppression?

GiveMeWordGames · 12/07/2025 11:58

If you want to lose weight you need to eat less than normal though. Below your TDEE, which you can calculate online. I don't religiously count calories but I have a good idea of what I'm eating. Prioritising protein and fibre over carbs, etc etc.

Are you doing any of that? Mounjaro won't just melt the fat off, it should reduce your appetite and make you feel fuller so that eating less food, and eating healthily, feels easier. You have to do some of the work yourself though!

Why did you stay at 2.5mg for a second month? Although some people find it works at that level it's not intended as a therapeutic dose and is mostly to get your body used to the meds. If you're not getting any effect you need to move up to 5mg.

I have put the packet of strawberries and the soup into my calorie tracker app

I will have the same soup later aswell for dinner. I have put that into the app

I put in the exercise that i did today in the calorie tracker app too. I went to the gym earlier for 40 minutes. I went for a walk for an hour. I also did another 30 mins cardio of dancing.

It is showing that i should be in a calorie deficit for today.

Do you think some bodies just cling onto weight more? Or lose it slower because of a slow metabolism

OP posts:
Yellowsubmarine55 · 12/07/2025 12:04

Could be you're not eating enough - two soups in a day probably isn't enough protein or fibre.

Also it is hot so it could just be water retention.

BabyCatFace · 12/07/2025 12:05

Good question asked above - why didn't you go up to 5mg if you didn't lose in the first month?
No, your body won't cling on to fat more than others and if you're in calorie deficit you will lose weight.

Yes, but that won't cause her to retain fat if she's eating too little. It doesn't add up.

TonTonMacoute · 12/07/2025 12:10

Are you measuring yourself as well OP.

It’s years ago now, but when I went on a weight loss programme I lost no weight at all for two months, but my clothes were falling off me. I think the fact that I was suddenly doing much more proper exercise was the reason.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 12/07/2025 12:12

A number of questions.

how much do you currently weigh?

how old are you?

whilst you’ve tracked your calories today have you genuinely eaten in calorie deficit the rest of the week?

and as others have asked why didn’t you move up to the 5mg if you had gained weight in the first month?

Exercise is largely irrelevant to weight loss.

God the posts are always so critical:

So far, I've had:

"You have to put some of the work in you know!"

"Its your fault for not eating ENOUGH . Two soups are too little."

And now "why didn't you move up a dose".

You don't have to move up a dose every month on mounjaro. If you move up every month, you get to a high dose very quickly.

My provider reccomended me to stay on the dose that i am on, for more than one month

OP posts:
kissmyfatass · 12/07/2025 12:23

Track everything that goes into your mouth.
I rid 3 months on 2.5 because it was giving me great suppressant. Then 5 for 2 months.
my food intake dropped considerably. If you are still able to eat normally I’d go up to 5mg because 2.5 isn’t enough for you.

if you’re in a deficit you’ll lose weight. Stick with it you’ll soon see results

PumpKim · 12/07/2025 12:23

I get what you're saying about critical posts but I don't think it was good advice to stay on 2.5mg if there was no loss. I moved straight up to 5mg but have been able to stay there now for third pen and still going well in it, so not expecting to need to move up for the next one either, but I'll judge it closer to the time.

Try a TDEE calculator and include your exercise levels, but then don't eat your exercise calories back, and don't track the exercise so your app doesn't then mess with your calorie tracking. Just base your calories on food intake, if you accurately state your exercise in a TDEE calculator it's already accounted for.

If you’re eating back your exercise calories then I’d expect that to be the issue, they’re often grossly overestimated.

Foreverm0re · 12/07/2025 12:27

If you hadn’t lost anything though after one month on 2.5 then you really should’ve tried moving up a dose. Bit weird not to, tbh. You must be doing something wrong to be actually gaining.

@WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady's post wasn't critical!

threeeggsontoast · 12/07/2025 12:29

I don’t think the posts are too critical, this forum is usually really supportive and people do want to help you succeed.

The best thing to do is put your weight and height into a TDEE calculator. That’ll tell you roughly how many daily calories you need to maintain your weight. Then deduct 500 from the total to get a rough idea of what you need to lose weight.

To lose weight, I need to eat around 1200 a day. Without MJ, I’d be really hungry but with MJ, it’s pretty easy. I don’t think about food and I often just forget to eat lunch.

When I do eat, I track everything in the WW app and I also try to base my meals around protein - eggs for breakfast, chicken and veg sandwich for lunch etc. Also drinking 2-3lts of water a day and trying to get in some exercise all helps.

So for you, it’s likely you’re either eating more than you think (every mouthful counts) or you’re significantly under eating and that’s not helping either. If you’re really only going to eat 2 tins of soup and some strawberries today, that’s not a balanced meal plan and you certainly won’t be getting enough protein or vitamins.

This isn’t criticism - it’s just what many of us have learned as we went about it. Good luck.

No it's not weird at all.

I was givem medical advice by my provider to stay on 2.5, and i went with his advice.

I don't think mounjaro is cost effective for me.

It is so expensive.

I lost more weight last year without using mounjaro.

I think i will discontinue it

Sounds as though that would be a good idea, Op.

BabyCatFace · 12/07/2025 12:33

But it's not working for you! It doesn't matter if you reach the top dose in the minimum time - it reaches maximum effectiveness and then just keeps working. It doesn't wear off.
