Put on weight on mounjaro

Kellyklara · 12/07/2025 11:42

I have been on mounjaro for two months. 2.5mg.

I don't feel like I have been eating anymore than normal.

I have put ON five pounds. It is very annoying.

No it's not weird at all.

I was givem medical advice by my provider to stay on 2.5, and i went with his advice.

Well I do think that’s weird that your provider would advise you not to move up a dose.

macandcheeseforthewine · 12/07/2025 15:09

I weigh daily. In the last week I put on half a pound a day, until I was 2.5lbs up. I then unexpectedly came on my period (a week early), and that weight has disappeared again.

It's one of the reasons I like to weigh daily, as I know bodies fluctuate due to hormones etc.

If you're genuinely in a calorie deficit you won't put weight on due to food, but it could be period related, water retention due to hot weather etc.

Kellyklara · 12/07/2025 12:54

I don't think I've been defensive at all.
I am just fed up with these mounjaro threads on this forum.

When any OP writes anything, not just me, she is told straightaway that it is her fault.

If someone posts a thread about side effects, she is told it is her fault for eating something wrong.

She will then say, no, I actually ate very healthily all week, she will then be told that it was her fault for doing something else

It really irritated me when a poster wrote on here "you need to put in some of the work, you know",
without even asking me what exercise I was doing. I exercise every single day. It is rude.
There are so many Mounjaro threads on here that are cruel and nasty to the OP, when people actually need support, not cruelty.

Edited

Exercise will do very little to affect your weight. Read the study they did on the humza (think that’s the name) tribe. It’s really interesting.

I’m doing a pre diabetes NHS workshop alongside the monjourno. The dietician that runs the course says that “calories earned” from exercising are a just a bonus and shouldn’t be counted as part of your calculation for calories in/out.

In your shoes I would go back to the provider, ask why they kept you on 2.5 when it’s clearly not having much effect on you, and discuss why they think you have put weight on. If they can’t give you sensible answers I’d either change supplier or, as you say, give up on the MJ.

sephiroth23 · 12/07/2025 16:12

2.5mg isn’t a therapeutic dose, it’s a starting dose - try increasing to 5mg which is the recommended guidance and see if it helps

Have you posted on this forum before under a different username OP, when you were very sick? Your writing style seems familiar. I notice the current username was created today. Thread went in a very similar direction.

I thought that. And I’ve seen another one a week or so ago.

FoxRedPuppy · 12/07/2025 16:14

But if genuine, then I think you should probably move up to 5mg-and stop adding exercise to calorie app. You shouldn’t ever count the calories burned from exercise (as there is no real way of knowing how many you personally have burned).

So why does the calorie counting app specifically ask me to input what exercise I have done that day?

No idea, they all do. But it’s a false deficit. I can split mine so it will show my exercise, but not count it in my calories. So you need about 1200 calories (depending on your TDEE) without exercise. Exercise is a bonus and is good for cardiovascular health and muscle mass. But most of losing weight is food.

No I haven't posted on the Mounjaro forum yet.
But what is the point of the question. Why would it be relevant anyway? People are allowed to post more than one thread, if they want to.

I haven't posted a Mounjaro thread yet. This is my first one. I have read a lot of the others.

Usually for the same reason they suggest you input how much water you’ve drunk - they’re collecting a whole picture of your daily dietary and fitness habits. Plus for any app developer, data is king.

HolidayHappy123 · 12/07/2025 16:37

If you’re not losing weight and tolerating 2.5 you obviously need to move up. 2.5 is just supposed to get you used to the meds. It isn’t expected to work at that dose.

pharmer · 12/07/2025 16:38

It is water retention due to the hot weather. When it cools down you will pee it all out

No I don't, "obviously need to move up".

No one has to stay on any medication, if they don't want to.

I have decided to stop taking it. It is not cost effective for me, and I don't want to spend more money for higher doses. The huge pricre of Mounjaro is not worth it, in my opinion

Even if it works at a higher dose, I have lost more weight before through using other methods. So I do not want to take it anymore.

TheBuffetInspector · 12/07/2025 16:46

God the posts are always so critical:

So far, I've had:

"You have to put some of the work in you know!"

"Its your fault for not eating ENOUGH . Two soups are too little."

And now "why didn't you move up a dose".

You don't have to move up a dose every month on mounjaro. If you move up every month, you get to a high dose very quickly.

My provider reccomended me to stay on the dose that i am on, for more than one month

I actually put on a stone!

I didn't dare post.

I started.. 2.5...lovely weight coming off. And from 14.8 I got down to 13 on 5.
Moved up to 7.5...

And I will write this...

IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT CALORIE COUNTING.

I was losing so much blood, massively haemorrhaging, was given a drug called Provera every 10 days. It didn't help.
My weight was creeping up daily. I went back up to 14 stone.

A whole stone back on.

I'd been in and out of hospital...

My medications were sorted, and within 2 more months, I've easily knocked that stone back off. I continue to lose at 1 or 2 lb a week.

@Kellyklara
In this heat we are designed to hold water. I'd put on 4lb yesterday. With drinking 2ltrs it had gone this morning, but I imagine tomorrow I'll shoe 4lb on again because I'm hot, knackered, sweating and have water retention.

So yeah, I put my stone back on, but it seems once everything as sorted it just came off again. Easily.

I have put the packet of strawberries and the soup into my calorie tracker app

I will have the same soup later aswell for dinner. I have put that into the app

I put in the exercise that i did today in the calorie tracker app too. I went to the gym earlier for 40 minutes. I went for a walk for an hour. I also did another 30 mins cardio of dancing.

It is showing that i should be in a calorie deficit for today.

Do you think some bodies just cling onto weight more? Or lose it slower because of a slow metabolism

The only thing that makes me gain weight on mounjaro is fluid retention. I've lost 5 stone since November. I occasionally gain a few pounds from fluid from a congenital heart condition. I eat 1200 calories a day as a rule.
If you are sure you are not overeating go for a check up and get your blood pressure done.

LevelUpDown · 12/07/2025 17:23

Ignore the bit in calorie counting apps that ask you to track your exercise. An app cannot accurately measure how many calories you burnt. Use exercise as a bonus but don’t use it to calculate

It would be helpful if you could state that you are posting to share your experience only. Most posters on this board who haven't lost any weight are looking for advice, and a lot of them are poorly informed about the things they need to do alongside taking MJ, such as maintaining a calorie deficit.

I understand that you don't want advice but if you're absolutely sure that you haven't been eating in a calorie surplus then you should talk to your doctor. Unexplained weight gain can be an indication of an underlying issue and should be investigated, just like unexplained weight loss.

No I don't need to state that i am just sharing my experience. Ffs. This is ridiculous.

On other forums i don't say to OP's

"You need to clearly write at the top of your thread if you are sharing your experience, or looking for advice"

My post was very polite. You are very rude.

Get your unexplained weight gain checked by a doctor.

No your post wasn't polite at all. You told me what to do, and again you are telling me what to do.

I am not a child. You are rude. No I don't want to see a doctor. That is my decision . You don't tell me what to do.

As other people have said, water retention, and different stages of the menstrual cylce can lead to weight gain.
