Why are so many people anti WLI

I just don’t understand it!

Mounjaro has literally changed my life overnight. It’s dealt with things that I didn’t even know were fixable. Why are so many people (presumably those that haven’t tried them and really have no intention to) so dead against it.

Do people misunderstand how it works? So many people perceive it as cheating…but I can’t fathom the logic - even if it was cheating…so what?! Why do they want people to be miserable and struggle with obesity?

Some of my friends openly say it's cheating but also say they couldnt do it without. The weight has really dropped off so it definitely works.

I think those who are negative may genuinely be scared of side effects (like me) but I think a lot of people see it as a lazy way to lose weight.

That's an honest reply. Are you negative as in negative towards WLI and wouldn't take them yourself or negative as in if someone else is taking them you look down on them.

And my second question would be, are you generally wary of all medications prescribed to you, or would it be specific to this? I only ask because I am very relaxed about medication - if I need it, I need it and I trust that the prescriber knows the risks and benefits before offering it, so I don't tend to worry about this aspect. But if I was someone who was on the whole wary of medical intervention, I'd totally get the aversion.

It’s not your money or your body.

That is what it boils down to. I really don’t give a chuff what other people think about me using WLI. It’s my money, it’s my body. (And I’m saving the NHS money, too.)

AbsoluteBeginner1 · 17/07/2025 10:38

@Mumble12 so its interesting because i know quite a few men doing it and they just crack on with it whereas the women tend to try and justify it/try and get me to go on it. What i dont like is when they say to me that im too overweight and i have to lose weight so it feels like im being very judged for trying to do it without injections. I dont get this from people who are not on injections.

MargoLivebetter · 17/07/2025 10:52

@AbsoluteBeginner1 that seems very rude of people to be saying to you that you are too overweight. No wonder you feel judged. I'm quite shocked that people are actually saying that out loud to you. I'm not sure what that has to do with WLI though.

@MargoLivebetter Hi - no its not specifically to do with WLI at all but the friends trying to lose weight using WLI are the ones who say this. The friends trying to lose weight without WLI dont. But i only joined this thread out of curiousity, not because im negative towards WLI. I do think they work, its just not for me, purely because all my friends have had bad side effects.

Oh that is interesting! I'd definitely never tell anyone they were overweight, that's so rude!! I do think people (like me) that have taken it, experience such an overhaul in their thinking that they want to share the benefits with anyone that asks, but I certainly wouldn't be telling anyone they were overweight or have that conversation unless they were actively starting a conversation about weight loss.

I've experienced a fair bit of judgement from 'skinny' people who love exercise and eating salad (cough work colleague currently opposite me cough) about how they couldn't eat what I eat, couldn't drink what I drink, couldn't go all week without running 10k at least 4 times a week etc, so I do think judgement comes from all angles but it's a shame you've experienced negativity from people taking WLI.

Edited to add: also I think SW, WW etc invites quite a bit of "oh you should join SW etc" so maybe it's just people on 'diets' of all kinds wanting to 'recruit'. I think also potentially men are quieter about it as there's far less weight based judgement of men about, whereas women have a lot more attention on them for the way they look

I'm genuinely shocked @AbsoluteBeginner1 ! I'm wondering if you live in France or Japan where people are so much more blunt. I would never tell anyone that they were too overweight. I've yet to meet an overweight person who didn't know that they were overweight!!!! (That includes me when I was overweight too.)

Actually case in point, colleague just got her lunch out and skinny running colleague said "woah that's a lot of bread, couldn't eat all that"...it's a sandwich with the fairly generic 2 slices of bread.

I'm not sure I'd be able to resist talking about my WLIs in her presence, and lying about all the takeaways they're letting me enjoy without having to make any effort.

I’d have just said, ‘thats good because I wasn’t offering you any’.

Gingercar · 17/07/2025 15:44

I’d have probably said “oh you are strange!”

I still don’t buy this. I physically couldn’t stuff my face with a kebab and ice cream while taking mounjaro. Even if I somehow could, I wouldn’t lose weight doing it because I wouldn’t be in a calorie defecit.

But she is doing this 😂 she eats crap infront of us everyday and is losing weight xx

Rosesanddaffs · 17/07/2025 22:11

BlueLimes · 16/07/2025 14:35

Your language says it all ‘stuffing her face’

How horrid.

I say “stuffing her face” as that’s what she tells us whilst laughing at others who cannot afford the injections or can’t go on them for whatever reason.

Her exact words are “look I can stuff my face and still lose weight”

It’s her money, body, choice. I personally don’t give two shits but I am allowed to post on here with what I’ve seen and heard and if you think it’s so “horrid” then I suggest you move on.

SilenceInside · 17/07/2025 22:11

@Rosesanddaffs if she is losing weight then she is in a calorie deficit overall.

Mounjaro is not magic and doesn't make you lose weight whilst you are overeating. It is still much better for someone like your victim colleague to lose weight whilst eating a poor diet, than to remain obese with a poor diet. Her overall health will be improved. Needless to say, she is not typical of people who are taking Mounjaro, most people stick to the suggested healthy eating plans that are outlined by the prescribers.

Rosesanddaffs · 17/07/2025 22:13

northernlight20 · 16/07/2025 14:33

But she’s clearly in a deficit hence the weight loss. Being in a calorie deficit doesn’t mean you can’t eat kebabs and ice cream, you are coming across as very judgemental. You can lose weight eating anything, just less of it in a calorie deficit jeeez! Like talking to brick wall with some of you’s ready to criticise anything that has nothing to do with you. It’s not your money or your body.

What’s it to you? Are you my colleague?

SilenceInside · 17/07/2025 22:19

@Rosesanddaffs It's a bit of a leap to apply what your odd and slightly unpleasant sounding colleague is like to all people, or even most people, who use WLI. She is an outlier, not a typical case.

BlueLimes · 17/07/2025 22:22

Of course you are entitled to post whatever you like and people will form an opinion of you on how you post.

Rosesanddaffs · 17/07/2025 22:23

@SilenceInside but this is what I see her doing every time I’m in. I’m not saying everyone on WLI is doing this but my colleague is and she is losing weight without trying and that is a fact.

Oh well, eh? Good job it doesn't affect you, then. You seem pretty riled about it, though.

I'm not anti them, but am concerned about long term effects such as muscle loss, or being tied into them for life as the weight often seems comes straight back on when you stop. I think there maybe could have been a few more studies before they were so freely rolled out, especially as even in my own experience a lot of people don't seem to be using them very 'healthily', they just want to lose a few pounds and so grab them without any thought at all for the consequences.

TBF here in the UK the laws are pretty tight and most prescribers want either to see you in person or over a zoom call. For a minimum its usually full body photos and lots of questions by a Dr as it has to be prescribed by a Dr or certain licenced proffessionals.

I do think we need to keep tight controls and I think its a genuine risk with these drugs that someone could abuse them that has a condition where they starve themselves and its clear in the US some are getting these drugs just for either minor weight loss or even just to avoid eating.

Like any medication it has side effects and risks and on a risk reward basis they balance is for those who are Obese or very obese the risks of being that heavy are far far higher than risks from the WLI. For people who are just overweight or want to shift a few pounds after say Christmas it should not be prescribed and actuall would not be in the UK

Calories are calories whether it's in the form of a leafy salad or KFC. Though if she's doing that everyday, then I can't imagine the nutritional value being high.

Is it the fact that she's being so braggy about it that annoys you?

If a slim person were to have a large takeaway of KFC everyday at their desk and say something similar about never putting on weight, I'm sure many of us would also find that odd and very attention seeking.
