I haven't lost any weight this week. I was reflecting on this and it's helped me understand my body a bit more. I think I store around 600g of glycogen, which is something like 2.4kg / 5-6 pounds in weight once bound. That's about 2400 calories of energy, higher than my basal metabolic rate of just under 1500, so I should expect my body to fluctuate by around 2.4kg / 6lb depending on how many carbs I've eaten within the last two days.
Therefore if I'm concerned entirely with my adipocytes, which I think I am as that is the metabolic problem, I should always actually be mentally either adding or subtracting that 2.4kg depending on what I've eaten, and not just yesterday, but over a few days. Comparing to last week, I was probably very low in glycogen when I weighed then. In the last two days I've had a bottle of wine and two mars bars! 😂 So it's not surprising I've lost no weight on the scale, even though over the week I've likely burned fat/ reduced adiposity.
In order to get that rapid weight loss experience of W1, I could eat no carbs for 3 days and then weigh. Another way to think of this is to say that I probably want to eventually aim for about 16-18kg total of body fat of which 2.4kg is fast access energy. At the moment I'm likely carrying around about 29kg of fat, so I have 13kg excess to burn, or around 100,000 calories. If I ate nothing (not my plan!) this would take just over two months to use up. Everything I eat extends this period by roughly 20%, if I estimate 300 calories per meal.
1 meal/day = 83 days (+17 days)
2 meals/day = 111 days (+44 days)
3 meals/day = 167 days (+100 days)
4 meals/day = 333 days (+267 days)
So it looks like increasing my basal metabolic rate is really worth it. If I also walk up my steep hill every day, I can save significant time (and money)
On 1 meal/day walking saves 25 days = 29% faster
On 2 meals/day walking saves 40 days = 36% faster
On 3 meals/day walking saves 76 days = 46% faster
On 4 meals/day walking saves 208 days = 63% faster
Looks like I can do this within 91 and 125 days eating the 3-4 meals a day I've felt satisfied on so far, if I just make sure to walk up my hill, which I'm happy to do as it's really nice. However I've also just realised this is a sort of embarassing real time demonstration of why I shouldn't calorie count, for sanity... 😳
