I don't understand weight loss injections. I have questions

Google tells me that people loose 10% of their body weight over a year. so if you started at 100kg, you would be 90kg after a whole year!! that is not good weight loss at all. definitely not worth, what it costs

but people loose significantly more than that, don't they?? certainly people on social media have definitely lost more than 10% and in a shorter space of time

2nd question from a place of considering trying it because I have mobility issues and it would really be beneficial to not be over weight. but, I don't particularly eat loads and loads. I have a sweet tooth and I emotionally eat, I'm not eating because I am hungry. so am I correct in thinking that it probably wouldn't help me much?

so, I am currently having my hair done and afterwards, I am going to Greggs to get a steak bake. I have no choice in this decision, even though I am not particularly hungry. will MJ give me the choice to not get it?

also I can very easily eat 2 sharing bags on minstrels and not feel even slightly sick. will MJ help me to stop doing this?

when people say that they have a lot to loose, what do they mean? I have about 35kg to loose, is that alot?

I'm on MJ and ive just had a steak bake, Saturday treat, my skinny BF had two and a yum yum. I would have done as well if not for the mj

Are you meant to wear clothes in the photos?! I’ve been sending underwear shots ffs 😂😂😂
oh well, at least it’s a true representation I guess!!

Me too! How embarrassing! Oh well!

OP I am like you I suspect. I can easily eat two sharing packs of Minstrels, a whole pack of hot cross buns, a whole box (not packet) of biscuits just sitting watching tv. I don’t mean ALL three in one sitting!

I started MJ Jan 8 and have gone from 13 and a half to 11 and a half stone. Minimal side effects. I get very cold and have some nausea maybe every fortnight. I need to lose another stone to be a healthy weight, and am aiming to lose two so I’m mid point in healthy before maintaining using a small dose.

I haven’t eaten any solid chocolate since being on jabs. No interest. I have the odd chocolate protein pudding. I think I eat like a skinny person, like I can take it or leave it. I never feel deprived. I eat maybe 800 to 1000 calories a day.

Most people lose a lot in first two weeks, then it settles down to a steady two pounds a week maybe.

If the weighing in is scary, use the metric you understand least. I have no idea about kg.

Good luck.

TheChosenTwo · 22/03/2025 11:47

@zempy I don’t remember it saying I had to be in underwear but from what I read it (and more likely the way I interpreted it!) it seemed like they needed to see as much of my form as possible - I mean I’m not bothered about being seen in my underwear but it has made me chuckle to think it was probably unnecessary 😂😂😂

I am currently on week 3 of taking Mounjaro after doing loads of research over the past few months. It doesn't magically make you burn fat, it acts as an appetite suppressant so I don't feel hungry. That has made it much, much easier to stick to a healthy diet because I'm not that bothered about what I eat so it is easy to choose healthy options. And that's what is making me lose weight.

I'm trying to use it as a support tool to help me retrain myself into enjoying nutritious food and reducing my portion sizes so that when I come off the injections I don't just put it all back on. I'm not planning on going up to the far higher doses as I don't want to chase full appetite surpression. I don't want to feel stuffed if I eat a banana and a yoghurt. I just need a tool to support me to make sensible choices for as long as it takes the habit to stick so I'm planning to be on Mounjaro for 3-6 months.

I haven't wanted anything sweet at all. The sweetest thing I've eaten is fruit. You do need to prioritise eating protein and fibre, and drinking plenty of water but that's the same with any healthy diet.

It has been remarkable to have no food noise. I was always thinking about food, craving food, planning my next meal and now I'm happy to just go into the kitchen and eat whatever I have that is nutritious and available. I honestly think it must be how people that don't struggle with their weight must feel.

I don't know about % bodyweight lost. But I've lost 10lbs in the first two weeks. Side effects are common so it's worth reading up on those and associated risks. Fortunately my side effects have been very minor and in general I feel good. I also figured that since I've been obese for years it was already impacting my health negatively so I was happy to give the injections a go.

Yes similar experience to this OP- worthwhile and feel great!

that is incredible, you must be so happy

incredibly happy, and somewhat disbelieving still. My mental image of myself hasn’t caught up yet. I’ve been obese since primary school. Right now I weigh less at 41 yrs old than I did when I was 11 and my mum first took me to Weight Watchers. I have no frame of reference for anything below a size 16 for me, which is the size I wore in early secondary school. I have literally always been a fat girl, as many many many delightful kids felt the need to tell me throughout the entirety of my school days and men then decided to continue as I went through adulthood, looking at you White Van Men who like to shout at strangers a they drive past!

I’m wearing 12/14 now, and I am trying really hard to not be surprised when I catch sight of myself in a window as I walk past a shop.

I’ve attached my tracker, graph and images to show what the journey has looked like so far. I’m still a work in progress.

Ive lost 35kg, which is just over 30% of my starting weight, in 6.5 months. But similarly to above, im struggling to see it in the mirror. Ive never been a healthy weight, ive never been hapy with my body, ive always struggled to lose and lost slowly and had to be massively in deficit to lose small amount, this is game changing, i just need my brain to catch up andrecognise it now. I can comfortably wear a size 10 jean, but my brain still sees a size 24 stomach.

mumwithatum · 22/03/2025 12:13

I’ve been on mounjaro for almost 5 weeks. I’ve lost 10% of my body weight in that time - from 100.1kg to 89.4kg.
like you I have a sweet tooth and emotionally eat, but it suppresses that need for me.

good luck whatever you decide

Doodledoohowareyou · 22/03/2025 12:25

I'm 8 weeks in and lost 10% of my body weight. I was a big sweet eater when the kids went to bed, but it's totally stopped that. There's no cravings there. I love it.

NewMrsF · 22/03/2025 12:27

I tried Saxenda for 6 months I lost 4lb (I was 245lb to start), fainted a few times, lost the ability to lift weights and poo’d myself twice. Also cost me £300 a month for the pleasure.
i barely managed 1200kcals a day and felt awful

That definitely the kind of disordered eating it's broken for me. I still eat chocolate some days, but am very happy with the equivalent of up to around 4 or 5 Minstrels now. That need to eat the whole bag has just gone.

Willowy1982 · 22/03/2025 12:31

I've lost 26.8% of my body weight in 7 months and I'm at goal and maintaining.

TheArtfulNavyDreamer · 22/03/2025 12:31

I no longer think about food, I don’t open the fridge every time I walk past it and I rarely experience any kind of craving when I do a square or two of chocolate is sufficient rather than the entire bar. Yes people could lose the weight without it if they had the willpower but my 15 year never ending diet demonstrates that I don’t have that kind of willpower. I now only eat when my stomach tells me I’m hungry rather than my brain. It’s really hard to fight against your own brain. I’ve consistently lost 1.5lbs a week for 6 months now and should reach goal by the summer. It doesn’t make weight magically fall of you but it’s still a miracle drug as far as I’m concerned.’

I have lost 30% as slowly as possible over eight months. I am beyond thrilled! I could not have done it without MJ.

minnienono · 22/03/2025 12:48

I constantly think about food but do cook healthy ish at least meals from scratch and don’t have unhealthy foods in the house, anyone had success in this situation? Portion control I think I already manage to at least a lesser extent, i honestly think it is just a don’t burn enough calories, any similar takes welcomed!

Lovethesparklylights · 22/03/2025 12:48

I was T2 diabetic and size 22 at 5foot8 and an emotional eater. I'm now an easy/loose size 16, have only just gone to 12.5 dose on mounjaro. I started in Aug last year and have lost 37kg so far.
Totally easy to forget to eat. I don't emotionally eat now, I just forget about food noise and eat for health.
I feel like I have my life back.
I'm going to stay on it for a while and aiming for a size 12-14 & healthy weight range. My blood sugar levels are healthy too.

What do you mean by no choice?

Children who have been promised? No money for anything else?

Or awareness that you will do it automatically.

MJ will definitely help with the latter.

Rosebud987 · 22/03/2025 12:57

I’ve tried every diet under the sun and on 6th Jan decided to start with the jabs. I’m 18kg down and I can honestly say it’s changed my life. I used to eat mindlessly, emotionally, to celebrate, boredom….anything really. And now it’s 12:55 and I’m still not hungry after having a stir fry last night. I used to walk past biscuits and have to have one but now I don’t even acknowledge their existence. I’ve not eaten a crisp, a takeaway, a cake, a biscuit and my body doesn’t want to I don’t feel any craving towards them.

Whateverfloatsyourgoat · 22/03/2025 12:57

Mounjaro is 22% in 72 weeks. Which would be 16% in a year. But if you’re 22 stone you’re going to lose more than if you’re just over the BMI limit. If you’re starting at 11.5 stone you’re not going to want to go lower than 16% or you’d be underweight.

Also, some people will have not taken it properly, given up etc etc

Also, as seen on here you get a lot of people that stay at very low doses. That would affect weight loss too.

I’ve lost 19% in 6 months and started at nearly 17 stone

PermanentTemporary · 22/03/2025 12:57

I would think about the steak bake (well, my equivalent which would probably be a huge cheese and pickle sandwich or two) abd I might even walk towards Greggs but I'd feel a rise of nausea athe sight of the shelves, lose interest and decide to have some water instead.

If I did eat something like that in the early weeks, I'd feel miserably uncomfortable for some hours and as if it were just sitting high up. I might even vomit some of it back. I'd certainly have some unpleasant tasting burps. I'd still be tasting it in the morning. Over time that puts you off.

In later weeks, if I ignored the loss of interest, I'd genuinely find it hard to swallow more than a few mouthfuls.

In 6 months I've lost 15% of my body weight. I'm another woman with PCOS so losing weight though possible is a truly hard slog. This really, really helps.

thankyounextplease · 22/03/2025 12:58

Having researched it and hung out in some social media groups about it the side effects have put me off.

They inhibit your pleasure receptors so if you have depression and anxiety it could make it worse.

Some people have had to have surgery due to growths springing up around their organs.

You lose muscle mass, so you have to eat really, really well when you do eat.

Organ damage is a very real possibility.

Some people also find it affects their life - they're very sick for at least a day or two after every injection and have to take time off work and can't get out of bed.

For some people it's worth it, I think if you're "can't get out of bed" obese it's a miracle and worth it. Otherwise I'm waiting to see more about what the long term effects are. The fact it's only recommended over a certain size makes me think the side effects are only worth the risk if your life would otherwise be shortened or made very difficult by your weight, because otherwise they would be suggesting it to everyone.

SawItOnTikTok · 22/03/2025 07:40

If you eat too many sweets and carbs then my god you’re going to know about it later. You’ll be shitting through the eye of a needle. So it’s not going to stop you reaching for the stuff if you’re an emotional eater who eats when you’re not hungry but hopefully the negative experience you’ll have will put you off doing it next time. Maybe that’s just me because I’m on it for diabetes but unfortunately for me I’m also a slow learner

Never had that reaction and I’m partial to both sweets and carbs. It’s not a laxative 😵‍💫

Nn9011 · 22/03/2025 13:05

I think in the future GLP1 drugs will be used for binge type eating disorders because so many people say anecdotally (myself included) that there's so much more to it than just feeling not hungry. Instead somehow they make you want proper food instead of snacking on sweet things. Don't get me wrong, I still like a wee Kinder bar every now and then but I am not craving anywhere near the sweets I was before and the urge to eat until in pain is gone!

It does make it difficult though emotionally and that's something I don't see too many people talk about. If you use your food to manage emotions and then suddenly you can't do that anymore there's a real transition period of trying to cope until you find new healthy ways of dealing with emotions. I would say there was probably 2 weeks of really difficult times where I just felt on edge because I wasn't dealing but now I go for walks or read or clean etc., or actually talk about how I'm feeling so I think that's passed. I'm sure it will pop up again in future but it's been actually really positive for helping me in the long run.

I treat it as a medication (because it is I guess) so I try not to recommend it but if you are struggling with weight, particularly because of the types of food you crave and emotional eating then it's definitely an option to explore with your doctor.

mindutopia · 22/03/2025 13:08

What happens when you stop though? Surely, it’s not sustainable forever. Because of the long term risks and simply the costs. I would hope that the NHS is providing support for people to change their lifestyles. But for everyone ordering them online, will you just eat the way your body is used to again once you can’t afford them anymore? I would hope people are seeking out support for lifestyle changes because we all know how yo-yo diets go. People just put on more weight than they lost.

SilenceInside · 22/03/2025 13:12

@mindutopiawhat long term risks are you thinking of? Mounjaro can be used indefinitely if needed, there are no long term risks in that.

The NHS has nothing to do with my weight loss and change in lifestyle. It’s very obvious that in order to maintain the weight loss I need to make permanent changes, that’s not going to come as a surprise to me after 9 months plus losing weight. But if necessary I will continue to take the medication, just like I do with my high BP medication.
