I don't understand weight loss injections. I have questions

Google tells me that people loose 10% of their body weight over a year. so if you started at 100kg, you would be 90kg after a whole year!! that is not good weight loss at all. definitely not worth, what it costs

but people loose significantly more than that, don't they?? certainly people on social media have definitely lost more than 10% and in a shorter space of time

2nd question from a place of considering trying it because I have mobility issues and it would really be beneficial to not be over weight. but, I don't particularly eat loads and loads. I have a sweet tooth and I emotionally eat, I'm not eating because I am hungry. so am I correct in thinking that it probably wouldn't help me much?

So could someone who is slightly overweight get it? If not why not, if people who are no longer overweight at all are allowed to continue it? I’m confused by the regulations the providers are following.

Its for obesity.

Is the person who is slightly overweight, obese?

In the USA, I think the regulations are different so its used for people who are just overweight as well.

@InfoSecInTheCity I’m curious about how the prescribing of mounjaro works. If you’re technically no longer overweight, how are you allowed to keep getting it?

It’s a bit different for me because I’m prescribed by NHS due to T2 diabetes. In the 6 months I’ve been on it, I’ve gone from BMI 35 to BMI 25 but more importantly, I’ve gone from being on insulin twice a day and max dose of Metformin, with an A1C level of 11% which is double what it would need to be to classify as diabetic, to just being on MJ, no insulin, no metformin and an A1C of 5.7% which puts me in diabetes remission.

I will probably be on MJ very long term, I will titrate down to lower doses, with regular HbA1C blood tests to make sure sugar is staying controlled on lower doses and we’ll just have to see how it works out over time. It’s a hell of a lot better being on 1 injection a week than 2 a day and the weight loss has been amazing.

spinningisthebest · 22/03/2025 08:22

I am an emotional and binge eater and fwiw I have had no binges since I started in September and only one or two ‘mindless’ moments of reaching for chocolate but it ended up as one piece not the whole bar. I echo what everyone is saying about food noise and helping to reorientate towards better choices. I can only ever have one glass of wine now. It have to watch my intake and am now maintaining at a BMI of 24 down from 31. The best bit for me and DH is I don’t snore any more !

Doggymummar · 22/03/2025 08:22

There are some companies that will prescribe for maintenance I'm with one of them. I don't want to name names incase it's seen as advertisement but they will help you to maintain a healthy weight. other's just cut you off at 25bmi

Just to add a bit about the mechanisms by which Mounjaro works.

it has several functions and mimics a couple of different hormones that your body creates naturally but sometimes not in big enough quantities.

It helps to regulate blood sugar by increasing your sensitivity to the insulin you create, this is important because your body will store any excess glucose as fat in order to get it out of your blood. Being able to more efficiently break it down helps to reduce the amount of fat you are creating. It also helps to reduce the ‘sugar crash’, craving effect that can be caused by high sugar levels.

It slows down your digestion so that you feel fuller for longer and as a result you are better able to regulate your food quantities.

In order to really make it work and for this to be a healthy and sustainable plan, you do need to put thought into your diet. Lower carb, higher protein, good fats, exercise to retain muscle mass. Because food will linger longer in your guts due to the slowed digestion, it’s wise at least at the beginning to be a bit careful about overly rich, overly spicy or greasy foods. It may be that you’re fine with them, it may be that you create a situation where you have to live in the bathroom for 48 hrs, so it’s best to be a bit timid at first.

this.

Appetite suppression is a side effect of the physiological purpose of the medication.

Many people think it’s ‘just’ an appetite suppressant but it’s far more than that. And it does help regulate non-hunger eating by reducing or eliminating food noise/emotional drivers in many people.

I’ve lost 20kg since mid-October and my BMI has gone from 39 to 33.

I’ll continue for another 10kg-ish then work out what long-term maintenance dose suits me.

nevertuesday · 22/03/2025 07:19

well done, that's brilliant and definitely worth the cost. does it help with sugar cravings or is it just an appetite suppressant? I suppose the only way to know if it would help me is to try it, really

also, what are you taking?

Both. Less appetite and food noise gone. Mounjaro.

TheChosenTwo · 22/03/2025 08:30

I’ve lost 25% of my body weight in 5 months, gone from 16st to 12st.
BMI started at 35 and as of this morning it’s 26.3.
Due to insulin resistant PCOS I suspect I will need this long term, it isn’t a case of just resetting - I lack the hormones naturally and this has given me what I didn’t know I always needed.
Feeling so much lighter and healthier in every way.

MajorCarolDanvers · 22/03/2025 08:37

I’ve been on mj for 7 months and I’ve lost 22%

I rarely eat sweet things now but can happily sit beside others wolfing down puddings with no desire whatsoever to join them.

TheChosenTwo · 22/03/2025 08:40

TourangaLeila · 22/03/2025 08:08

Well, your going to need too regularly if you want a prescription. Along with taking photos from front side and back in leggings and a tight top.

Time to get factual about the situation op!

Are you meant to wear clothes in the photos?! I’ve been sending underwear shots ffs 😂😂😂
oh well, at least it’s a true representation I guess!!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 22/03/2025 08:53

I’ve lost 38% and was looking at the stats last night and it was something like 20% expected loss on 10mg (I didn’t go above that). I’ve gone from bmi 40 to 24, although I’ve suddenly started putting weight back on this week :(

@TheChosenTwo😂😂 maybe I should start doing this to ensure I keep getting prescribed. I rolled my top up on the last photo I sent to make sure I still looked fat 🫢

Isobel201 · 22/03/2025 09:14

I've just been put on it for diabetes, I'm hoping this will help me. I'm also waiting to go on a shake and soup diet as well, so with the injections and this diet, it will help lose the weight. I started it on Tuesday, and the hunger noise has decreased already.

2boyzNosleep · 22/03/2025 09:22

Not read the full thread, looked into it myself and from what I can gather is that a lot of people lose a significant amount of weight but a large number regain weight once they stop the injections, so on average it's about 14% weightloss if you factor in weight gain afterwards.

But, that's an average and there's always going to be people that don't regain any or much weight, whilst some people might regain everything.

I think the idea is to use the benefit of the reduced appetite and food noise to break bad habits and your body has adjusted to eating when hungry or stopping when full. So that when you stop the injections and your hunger fully comes back, then you don't resort to previous eating habits.

You’re not supposed to come off it but stay on 2.5 dose.

OntheTrainX · 22/03/2025 09:43

I’m not trained in science but I suppose you could think of obesity in the same way as alcoholism. An alcoholic is still an alcoholic even if she hasn’t had a glass of wine or a pint since 2006.

GnomeDePlume · 22/03/2025 09:45

I'm prescribed mounjaro for diabetes, likely for life. But that is fine, I am on other medications for life (non weight related conditions) so a weekly tiny injection which I barely feel is neither here nor there.

PeachesPeachesPeachesPeachesPeaches · 22/03/2025 09:50

I went from 135kg to 90kg, so a third of my total body weight, in seven months. I’m now off mounjaro and continuing to lose on intermittent fasting.

AmusedGoose · 22/03/2025 09:56

I totally lost interest in all food. But had terrible sickness and diarrhoea. I didn't lose weight. I had of GP for diabetic control. I also tried tablet form but couldn't tolerate those either.

I have been on MJ for 5 weeks now. I have lost 21lb. But I do have a lot to lose.
I was very skeptical but it’s been amazing at blocking out the good noise. I no longer crave chocolate or cakes and no binge eating either.
I have had some side effects and although I’ve taken one shot at 5mg I’m actually considering going back down to 2.5 as was losing and had fewer side effects.
if you do want to try I have a discount code for medexpress which I can pm you.

oh, that would be amazing. thank you that is kind!

so, I am currently having my hair done and afterwards, I am going to Greggs to get a steak bake. I have no choice in this decision, even though I am not particularly hungry. will MJ give me the choice to not get it?

also I can very easily eat 2 sharing bags on minstrels and not feel even slightly sick. will MJ help me to stop doing this?

when people say that they have a lot to loose, what do they mean? I have about 35kg to loose, is that alot?

OP posts:
SilenceInside · 22/03/2025 10:58

@nevertuesdaywhat you’ve seen from your internet searching is inaccurate. The recent clinical trials for Mounjaro showed that participants lost an average of around 26% of their starting weight over 84 to 88 weeks (https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/tirzepatide-demonstrated-significant-and-superior-weight-loss)

Clearly that’s also an average. The range of weight loss was quite wide, with some only losing a little of their starting weight and some losing >50%

I’ve been taking Mounjaro for about 9 months now and have lost around 34% of my starting weight.

There is an aspect of personal choice and good decision making involved that you need to take responsibility for.

You do have a choice right now as to whether you walk into Greggs, ask for a steak bake, pay for it and eat it. It feels hard, there is huge temptation, but you have a choice.

Does the MJ make it easier, yes it does for me. Last night I was in Sainsburys, they had the new Lindt Dubai chocolate bar. I stood, I looked, I wondered if it’s as good as people say, I considered buying it. I decided not to and was ok with that decision. I didn’t dwell on it or obsess over it for the rest of the evening, I don’t regret not getting it. But I could have bought it, could have eaten it, probably could have eaten the whole thing until I felt sick, the MJ wouldn’t have stopped me from being able to do that.

SilenceInside · 22/03/2025 11:05

@nevertuesday people sharing discount codes are doing it so that they can get a significant discount too, as well as being kind. There is a whole section on MN for weight loss discount codes, here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weight-loss-promo-codes

If it works as it has with me then the urge to go to Greggs won't exist in the first place never mind getting as far as dreaming about steak bakes.

If someone offers you a Minstrel you probably won't bother taking any or at the most you'll have one and think that's nice but it's enough now.

Snozzlemaid · 22/03/2025 11:30

Yes it will stop you needing that Greggs and two packets of minstrels. I have absolutely no problem in staying away from unhealthy foods now. I just don’t think about food all day any longer, I just eat at meal times when I know I have to, to fuel my body.
I’ve lost 6 stone since last May on MJ which looks like it is about 38 kg. I could never have achieved this without it.
I’m off to take another 3 sacks of clothes to the charity shop shortly. Delighted that they’re now all hanging off me.
MJ has completely changed my life. I feel 10 years younger. I thought my aches and pains were age but no it was all my weight.
If I have to stay on it for life it would be worth every single penny.
