Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

I might stay on 2.5. Suppression is good and I haven't had any side effects besides being cold. Am on holiday this week though so will see how this goes.

Have totally gone off alcohol. Did dry january and had some wine last night - no interest, left it after a few sips.

Waymarked7 · 09/02/2025 08:31

I started early December with a BMI of 30, lost 10kg now and aiming for another 4/5kg then will stop. Have just started a new pen and not keen to buy any more so will see how the next month goes. I'm keen to stop taking it as soon as possible.

Have just steadily lost and tried to eat a reasonable amount so it's sustainable once I stop. Could have eaten less but it's not a healthy way to lose weight or live.

You've done so well. I need to increase my exercise as I'm only losing 1lb a week. I don't want to drop my calories down any more from 1200 as it makes me feel rubbish.

That is good. Week 3 and whilst I can control and not hungry some foods that I did not want at all our back. For example wine on weds was gross last night I had a small glass but could not drink a second. Small pieces of choc v a whole bar. I have one more week to go on 2.5 mg. I have 9kg to go x

@Tinydancer123 you had pretty good loss the first week though didn't you? It's probably just a blip and you will lose well next week.

I jabbed yesterday morning and dropped right down to 1.25mg (from 1.6mg) in a bid to not have side-effects. it worked in that the only side-effects were being freezing cold and constipated. The suppression is low though, but better than nothing. I'm going to jab again in 5 days and try and increase it a bit.

My loss is still 6lb after 6 weeks but feels like it's about to go down a bit more.

Yes I did lose alot the first week. How are you this weekend ?

Dunkou · 15/02/2025 09:49

How are people doing? I'm still pottering along on the tiny doses, and haven't lost anything for 2 weeks. I thought I had stuck to my calorie allowance but guess I might have gone a little over, and have definitely not been very active.

I've lost 6 pounds in 7 weeks:

Week 1: 2.5g
Week 2: 2g
Weeks 3 - 5: 1.6g
Weeks 6 - 7: 1.25g

I jabbed 1.25g yesterday morning, from a new pen. It is the first time I have had zero side-effects. So now I feel more confident about moving up the dosage and get some more weight loss.

PencilPleat · 15/02/2025 18:23

How long do you plan to stay on 1.25mg @Dunkou ?

I am wondering whether this might be the way froward for me. BMI 27 with underlying conditions so I believe I qualify for MJ, but severe anxiety about vomiting so would need to go very slowly to minimise side effects.

I'm going to go to 1.6mg next jab and see how I feel on that. I've had decent suppression today, but it only lasts about 3 days for me on 1.25mg so I am keen to move up a little.

The side effects really weren't worth it for me when I tried 2.5mg originally, I was ending up eating more than I would on a normal diet, and more rubbish, than usual just to stop the nausea and dizziness.

Tinydancer123 · 17/02/2025 16:59

Hi all - week 4 and no supression and a gain. I injected on Thursday 13th. This is my last 2.5mg and due to take 5mg on Thursday. A real struggle and my water intake is also down :( Feeling deflated !

Did you stay within your calorie allowance? I stayed the same for 2 weeks (actually went up a pound) but then it suddenly dropped down.

It is hard to see it not going down a bit at least weekly though.

Yes but the weekend we were away so I may have gone over. Old habits have crept in sadly :( so really need to get on top of things ! It was just hard as away with friends with food and drinks everywhere x

Dunkou · 17/02/2025 21:06

Ah, that's tough if you were away. I'm going away next month and know I'll fall off the wagon. But aim to get straight back on it (which is my downfall every year, go on holiday and then never manage to rein myself back in).

You'll be fine, this is just the beginning.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 18/02/2025 09:41

I went away for 2 weeks in January so skipped the MJ for that time (hot country and no guaranteed access to a fridge). But, I think because I was being mindful about what I ate, despite eating and drinking I did so in moderation and came back 3lbs lighter. That has never happened to me after a holiday - I usually come back several pounds heavier!

Thank you ! Today has been okay - I have again just had to be very mindful . Thursday is 5mg. How are you getting on ?

Amazing ! Well done . I do not want to weigh after that weekend. Going to keep going and weigh next week.

"NICE recommend that Wegovy should be prescribed alongside diet and physical activity support for adults with a weight-related health condition – such as hypertension or cardiovascular disease and a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 35, or, exceptionally, a BMI of 30, if they meet the criteria for specialist weight loss services"

RememberDecember · 19/02/2025 07:53

Hi, can I join you here. Starting at 27 BMI with high cholesterol. Just in week one and seems ok.

I don’t know if I am going to have issues reordering a pen if I am below 27BMI at reorder point (3 weeks?) - are the provider likely to question this? I started with MedExpress but from further reading looks like I should have chosen a provider who offers maintenance doses. I would like to get to 23 BMI. Thanks if any advice.

Yes. Because "the cost-effectiveness estimates for semaglutide are likely to be within what is normally considered a cost-effective use of NHS resources." I belive most people on this thread are paying privately.

Hi. Did you have to show evidence of your high cholesterol?

Romanswindowcleaner · 20/02/2025 06:14

@iheartcatz I didn’t have to show evidence to medexpress (but I was ready with a scan of my latest blood tests if they wanted it).

@RememberDecember i was wondering the same thing. Started Monday on 2.5, bmi 28. Though NICE guidelines are only that, guidelines, and aimed at NHS prescribing (as per pp most people on this thread are private patients). If the MHRA issues rules though that’s something different - I need to do some more research but if anyone has links I’d be grateful!

RememberDecember · 20/02/2025 06:21

@iheartcatz i didn’t need to provide evidence of high cholesterol although like @Romanswindowcleaner I was ready to.

keen to hear if anyone had issues ordering with BMI below 27!

Dunkou · 20/02/2025 06:59

MedExpress let you keep ordering until BMI 23.5 as long as you haven't had a gap of 8 weeks between ordering. Other providers have different levels, one of the maintenance threads will have some details.

Most let you go down to 21 bmi, some 19. MedExpress have a hard cut off at 23.5. Not sure if any others are that high,

RememberDecember · 20/02/2025 07:22

At the moment I feel like I’d be delighted to get to 23.5 BMI! I am only on my first pen at the moment. Do you have to keep providing body and scales pics to reorder with MedExpress?

Tinydancer123 · 20/02/2025 11:54

Hi all a little update - despite the weekend away I maintained. In total week 1 -4 on 2.5 mg I lost - 11 pounds. Strange the last week of 2.5mg I felt the most sick and had to eat to kerb it. Also this week is my time of month , therefore I may not have lost due to this.

Today is my first day of 5mg , I took it at 1030 am - so far very cold and the burps are strong 🤣. I have my mint capusles and will head to Holland and Barrett for other items.

Any tips for 5mg ?

I hope you are all doing well.
