Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

My BMI is currently 27.1, I'm 5ft 1 and 10.6 stones. Ideally I want to lose 2 stone as I have high blood pressure and spinal stenosis. I've been on Mounjaro for a week and lost 1.5kg. I realise I'm going to be in the 'healthy weight range' quite soon but I want to be under 9 stone as I'm very small framed. Will my provider keep issuing my prescription once I'm in the healthy range?

I have maintained now at 59.9kg for the last 8 weeks. This includes a week all inclusive holiday.

Ive always focused on my stomach and thighs as being where my weight was but looking at this years bikini shots (I wore a bikini for the first time in 20 odd years!) I can see my weight was everywhere and I looked a bloated mess!

My suitcase weighed 15kg which is what I’ve lost in weight. My mind was blown! It’s 20% of my body weight, gone 🤯

I think most will still prescribe down to BMI 23. I hope so anyway!

Weighed myself this morning - 2lbs off - have now lost a stone in just under 7 weeks. 17 lbs to go to be under BMI 25. Then I might go down to BMI 23 depending on how I feel.

Can I join you? I’m finding this thread reassuring and inspirational.
I’m another post menopausal shortie with raised cholesterol and have finally made a decision to order MJ - it is due to arrive on Thursday.

SW 11 stone
BMI 28.2
Total Cholesterol 7.2
HbA1C 39.

Although not in the diabetic range, I am hoping to reduce my HbA1c as well as my cholesterol.

First goal is to get back below 10 stone which would be a BMI in range.

Second goal would be 9 stone if possible, but I’ve not been that weight for about 25 years.

Hello @HereIGoOnceMore,

I have also found inspiration from this and many other threads.

I have just ordered a month’s worth of Mounjaro from Superdrug, which all being well should be ready for me on Thursday this week.

I’m early 60s and have struggled to shift this extra weight which has been hanging around for several years now.

SW 11.10
BMI 30ish
Cholesterol 6.7
Target weight 10 stone (or maybe less)

Looking forward to getting started. A bit apprehensive about possible side effects, but want to give it a go anyway.

Pipsballoon · 26/05/2025 15:35

Welcome @BigBurrata and @HereIGoOnceMore

I hope you'll find it encouraging to hear the following:

SW 11.5
CW 10.2
BMI 26
TW 9.10 (to get to a BMI of 24)

I'm 59, have really struggled to lose weight previously, particularly in recent years, so I'm delighted with my current progress. I've taken it slowly and steadily, and tried to put some good habits in place, for when I stop taking MJ, in the hope that I can maintain. The side effects have been minimal, I inject before bed, and generally haven't been too impacted. There's been some hair loss, but I'm lucky to have thick hair so I'm not worried about that, cold hands and feet occasionally, but nothing I can't cope with, and the inevitable constipation, which you can actively manage by drinking lots of water and taking something to help, if you need to.

Th suppression has been constantly good, meaning I could avoid temptation and make good choices, even when we've been eating out, been away for the weekend, or had treats available at home. I would say go for it, I certainly don't regret it, I feel great, look so much better and am fitting back into clothes I hadn't worn for ages, which is such a nice feeling. I'm off on holiday next week, and hoping to hit the 9 stone something mark before I do, but even if I don't, I will enjoy packing for the first time in ages, knowing I feel more confident in myself and my appearance!

HereIGoOnceMore · 26/05/2025 16:25

Thanks @Pipsballoonit’s good to hear your story. I know I have taken a while to decide whether or not it’s the right step for me and I imagine I’m not alone in wavering.
It’s helpful to read the tips for managing side effects and I will remember these if I need them.

I’m planning on the slow and steady approach with maintenance in mind. Fortunately, we are doing a walking holiday this year and so I don’t need to worry too much about being beach ready.

Good luck @BigBurratawe can do this. 💪

SmallFried · 26/05/2025 23:06

SW - 12 stone. BMI 27

CW - 8 stone 10. BMI 19.5

Total time to goal: 5 months

Yeeeey!

Plan: figure out a maintenance plan and gradually titrate down the doses and maybe come off mj at some point....

BigBurrata · 27/05/2025 15:00

Thank you @Pipsballoon and @SmallFried !

Really good to hear of your experiences, and well done!!

@HereIGoOnceMore Slow and steady here too, that’s the plan 😁

I’ll be very interested to hear how you get on with maintenance. I’m 10st 6lb now and I think I have maybe 3-6lb to lose. I’m pretty happy how I look now tbh - I lift weights so I’m heavy! But most of my size 12 jeans are quite loose on me now.

Interestingly I’ve lost weight very differently on Mounjaro and have somehow managed to retain my boobs which are usually the first thing to go! I definitely think it’s affected my hormones in a good way. I think if I stay under 10:6 after I’ve titrated off Mounjaro I’ll be very happy, but I’d like to get a bit lower in weight before I try to maintain to give myself some wiggle room.

Welcome to all the newbies! I’m a fellow post menopausal shortie! 😂

HereIGoOnceMore · 30/05/2025 21:34

So I did my first injection last night, and had no side effects for the first 24 hours, but less promisingly, no suppression.

But I’m definitely feeling a bit overfull after a very modest dinner and didn’t fancy my usual Friday Night Wine, so I think it must be working.

BigBurrata · 01/06/2025 13:00

Great to hear that you’ve got started @HereIGoOnceMore

My pen hasn’t arrived at the chemist yet, hopefully Monday or Tuesday.
I’ve been cutting down a bit in preparation anyway.
I need to get used to not snacking in the evening, or having “seconds” (and “thirds”!) at dinner time, which are 2 of my biggest downfalls really. There are many others too 😂

I’m not sure what appetite suppression is going to feel like really, I mostly eat out of habit I think, not because I feel hungry as such.

Hope it’s going OK with you after a couple of days, it does sound like it could be having an effect already.

HereIGoOnceMore · 01/06/2025 20:49

Thanks @BigBurrataI think I have been really fortunate not to have had any side effects. I have still felt hungry but have been satisfied after smaller meals, so although it’s been a conscious effort to eat less, it has been less hard than a diet normally would at this point.

Hope you get your meds and fingers crossed for a good start.

HereIGoOnceMore · 05/06/2025 10:51

Happy to say I’m 5LB down this morning which I am delighted about!
Going to take dose 2 after work.

Hello
Am also post menopausal, shortish, with high cholesterol, very close to being prediabetic and also have oesteoarthritis and back issues.
Have just ordered my first pen and am hoping it will help with all the above plus trimming my massive post menopausal belly. I have a size 10 frame and size 16 waist and it makes wearing anything even vaguely fitted hugely uncomfortable.
Nice to find others in a similar position.
