Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

I'm good! Glad of the better weather so getting a few more steps in. Weight loss is going steadily at a pound a week, I'm 8 pounds down now since start of the year.

I have a friend staying at the weekend, and a short holiday next month so will try and stay on track as much as possible.

Much as I think MJ is safe, I don't want to stay on it longer than necessary due to not having willpower in social situations.

Have you managed to keep the weight off, @MJconfessions ?

I think I would once I lost it as I do so much exercise. Hoping I could lose the weight in a few months and then keep it off.

I have! Although I’m currently still taking a maintenance dose. It was my plan to do the same as you, initially. So I did stop for a few weeks last month - and nothing bad happened. The food noise etc wasn’t intimidating.

However I made the decision to go back on, to give myself more of a buffer and a gradual reduction. I had some medication left so thought better to use it up as it wouldn’t make sense to just keep it indefinitely.

Hi - I exercise at least four times a week - spin, bodycombat and weights. I am now adding yoga in on a sunay. :) I sometimes do feel a little more sluggish with the injections but am still keeping to my routine. I also try to walk at least 9000 steps a day.

SharpOpalNewt · 25/02/2025 14:56

Great, it sounds like it has worked well for people who exercise regularly already and want to lose a similar amount to me.

Wow! Puts my 10 minutes of weights a day and lucky if I reach 10,000 steps a day to shame. Inspiring!

You are doing well ! Anything is better than nothing 🥰

SharpOpalNewt · 27/02/2025 13:39

You have all convinced me. I filled in all the forms and sent the photos to Superdrug. MJ is being delivered tomorrow! Can't wait to be lighter again and I hope not have joint pain due to my weight.

Go for it ! Week 1 5 mg loss of 4 pounds.
Although I feel food noise was not reduced - I have managed to stick to calories.
I am quite close to goal now about 8 pounds to go. Unsure how I will maintain ie what to do .

Dunkou · 27/02/2025 21:24

@Tinydancer123 4 pounds that's great! All the exercise must be making a difference alongside the 5mg.

SharpOpalNewt · 28/02/2025 05:52

Ah, that's great, well done @Tinydancer123

How are you getting along ?

Tinydancer123 · 01/03/2025 11:00

Morning all - injection 2 of 5mg much easier ! I am shocked at how different my body looks. Whilst I knew the extra weight was not ideal - I lived with it - in my mind it was not that bad. Now I see myself and realise I am going to really have to work hard to maintain - as already I feel/look so much better !

SharpOpalNewt · 01/03/2025 17:16

First jab done, it was pretty easy. Feel ok so far. Going to the cinema this evening, armed with a small Dairy Milk from a multipack!

Dinner will be chicken tenders and a Massive Salad™ 😉

RememberDecember · 01/03/2025 18:50

Well done @Tinydancer123, 4lbs is a great loss!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 02/03/2025 08:48

Well done @Tinydancer123

I've only lost 8lbs but I'm not doing MJ for weight loss reasons, although it's a bonus if I get back to a healthy BMI. My BMI was 27 when I started .

RememberDecember · 02/03/2025 09:24

No stunning losses here unfortunately, but I am tracking downwards. 2kg in 2weeks, slow but sustainable I guess.

I just checked and I was trying to be good before starting MJ so that is actually half a stone in a month which is good for me!

Ive stopped looking at the main Feb thread as much as there are some huge losses on there that it is a little dispiriting to compare against.

Pretty normal really, certainly not sick nor noticing any stomach issues.

Stuck to 1400 calories yesterday no problem. Enjoyed my food but didn't feel hungry inbetween.

Have been to the gym and had a bacon butty so far today, all good so far.

Dunkou · 02/03/2025 15:05

@SharpOpalNewt glad all is well so far.
@RememberDecember I know what you mean about the main monthly threads, I felt like I was running a different race to everyone else (I know it's not a race but my Sunday brain can't think of a better analogy)
@Tinydancer123 it's great to start feeling more back to your old self, isn't it!

I'm happy with my progress. 9lbs lost in 9 weeks. I'd lost some myself in the months prior to MJ so I'm now a stone less than last June. I had a pair of jeans on yesterday that felt pretty loose, last summer I wasn't even close to getting them zipped up.

I've got about a stone left to go, but already feel so much better.

I had a friend stay the weekend which was a bit of a 'test'. I'd usually have got in all kinds of treats for us, ice cream and cakes, mainly because I would want them. I did eat a bit differently to usual to not be unsociable, but nothing over the top and was within maintenance calories rather than far over, which I would usually have done.

SharpOpalNewt · 02/03/2025 19:14

Just under 1600 calories for the day. Went to the gym and did a couple of hours in the garden though so hopefully a bit more than yesterday is justified.

I hope you had a lovely weekend ?I am glad it went well. Fantastic news for the jeans and you :) We are on the same path - I have about a stone to go. I am unsure what to do as 5mg is testing my willpower which is good but the nausea is horrid. I need to order my next pen so do I go 5 or 7.5mg . Will you slowly reduce or just stop ?

Pipsballoon · 03/03/2025 12:30

So glad I stumbled across this thread, I started with my first injection this week, at a starting BMI of 29, due to having recently been diagnosed with sleep apnoea. I'm 5ft 1 and have hovered around 11 and a half stone since menopause. The weight loss will be welcome for reasons of vanity (no point pretending) but the purpose of losing weight is to try to stop snoring and thereby avoid having to use a CPAP machine. It's been really inspiring to hear of the great successes within this group

Dunkou · 03/03/2025 21:23

@Tinydancer123 I'll probably remain on between 1.25mg - 1.6mg for the next 3 months, until I reach my goal (as long as that level keeps working for me). Maybe when I'm within 2 pounds of goal I'll start stretching out the jabs to 9 days, as I can't really reduce the dose any more as it's so low.

I'm going to buy an extra pen or two as back up though for when I've finished, Just in case a few months later I need to lose some again. My latest pen has an expiry date for December. I'm very aware that I won't be able to get a prescription again unless I put all the weight back on, so would rather waste the money on spare pens than have nothing.

@Pipsballoon welcome! sleep apnoea must make weight control hard as well, I know when I sleep badly (a lot) it makes my appetite really high. So hopefully you'll get the double whammy of MJ loss and more control from more sleep.
