Mounjaro, 10st or more to lose.

BookishBabe · 09/12/2024 05:43

Hello fellow mounjaro users or people thinking about starting. I have seen there is a thread for people needing to lose 5 stone plus, but even there I felt a little bit big.
I need to lose 12 stone, and even then my BMI would be 33.
Alot of people seem to be starting mounjaro with a starting BMI of 33, so I think it sometimes feels better to be among people who have the same amount to lose, 12 stone feels so daunting and scary. It's going to be a long battle.

This is my final chance before weight loss surgery, which I really don't want to do or risk.
I am 32 years old and have 2 young sons (7 and 5), one is disabled and the other is struggling and is on a reduced timetable at school. They need me to be around for a very long time and at the moment I feel like I am failing them.

I started calorie counting/a calorie controlled diet last Monday (2nd December). I was thinking about putting it off because of Christmas, but I can always come up with an excuse, so I decided to just go for it.

I weighed in at 27st and 7lbs.
At 5 ft 8 that gave me a BMI of 58.5!!!

I had some blood tests in March which showed I was prediabetic, I have done precisely nothing since then to do anything about it and have buried my head in the sand!

My mounjaro was delivered Tuesday afternoon and I took my first jab on Wednesday morning. I think its working slightly now, but I didn't feel any different for the first 3 days, but I'm either used to eating less (unlikely in 7 days) or the mounjaro has started to take effect.

So, one week in, calorie controlled diet every day, trying to get lots of protein, drinking loads, a few days of mounjaro in my system.

Weigh day time,

drum roll

26st and 11lbs!!!! 🥳

10lbs gone. I am very happy with that. I used to be able to lose 15lbs in a week when I was younger, but I was much more active back then and thanks to being so overweight I do struggle with activity.

BMI is now 57! So I've lost 1.5 on my BMI. Fingers crossed I can keep this going, I just need the number to keep going down! I'm really hoping I can be in a healthier and happier place with myself.

So, long post over.

Does anyone with 10st or more to lose want to join me here?

I know its daunting but I think if anyone feels like me, this is probably our last hope before surgery and our health is probably starting to decline or already has due to the weight we have on our bodies.

Please can I join you all? I'm not on MJ yet, on waiting list. But I have 10 stone or maybe 11 stone to lose depending, but any loss right now would be good. All of your posts are so positive, it's giving me hope this is actually doable.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 05:26

What waiting list are you on? Have you managed to get NHS funding?

Wallywobbles · 10/12/2024 07:35

Are any of you ladies able to do any exercise? If at all possible can I recommend starting moving in water. Be that swimming or walking. It will do you so much good and the change in my body it has given me is so much more than the actual weight I've lost.

I'm 16.5 kg down another 35kg to go ideally. Been losing since May and on MJ since August. For me it's been slower weight loss than a lot of others. I've been v low carbing since May.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 09:18

It's going in the right direction though isn't it.

There's a real spread of amounts lost but any changes have to work long term.

Ficklebricks · 10/12/2024 09:30

I am interested in starting the injections both for weight loss but also for the reported ADHD benefit. I haven't been diagnosed because at my age I just think what's the point, nobody cares. I do fit most of the symptoms though.

Can you be on these injections for life? I'm worried I'll see a whole new side of myself and get huge relief from the ADHD symptoms and then have to give it all up eventually and go back to my old ways. I could just about cope with getting fat again but I don't think I could cope with the ADHD symptoms after seeing the way normal people live.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 09:38

You can do "Right to Choose" for an adhd assessment and get seen within 20weeks. That's what I've done. I thought if I get adhd med that can be for life.

I've been told my local waiting list is 8 years! 🙁

I'm also not sure I'm a suitable candidate for the ADHD meds as I have some medical issues which might make the medicine too risky. That's why I'm looking at the injections as a possible treatment for both the ADHD and my life long battle with my weight.

I have found conflicting info online about whether you can be on the injections for life, it's very confusing.

Ficklebricks · 10/12/2024 10:02

To add to my previous post, I spoke to my GP and they said you can't get an NHS prescription if you do the Right to Choose option. You would have to pay privately for your medicine. The GP will only continue the prescriptions if the diagnosis is obtained via the normal NHS route which takes years.

Perhaps it's a postcode lottery and I have a crap GP? Either way I'm not sure the meds would be safe for me anyway.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 10:03

Yes the local waiting list will be huge (I think ours is 5 years) which was why is suggetaed "Right to choose" as a route. It's a bit like choosing which hospital you want - you can choose a different provider (such as adhd360 or DrJ and colleagues). You take the paperwork to the surgery and can go that route instead. This is available nationally.

Completely understand about the drugs. I'm really hoping for adhd drugs as I think it's monitored and established in a way MJ isn't.

I'm not relying on MJ being available longer term either (won't half the population end up on them long term?) and we might not afford them but it does look like the researchers are saying for it to work for most people it will need to be long term. 😬. There are some places offering maintenance packages.

Ficklebricks · 10/12/2024 11:00

I think these weight loss injections have been used long term for diabetic patients to help their blood sugars, but I'm not sure if the doses are similar. It does seem to be an emerging trend and I think you're right, GPs will be prescribing them to anyone in the obese BMI category in future.

The only reason I haven't gone down the NHS route is because they make you do the whole weight watchers / slimming world thing first as a "lifestyle service" referral. As I suffer from bulimia this is completely unhelpful and just pushes me into relapse so I think I'll look at paying for myself instead!

JusteanBiscuits · 10/12/2024 13:06

At this point, I am planning on being on Mounjaro (or what ever comes next!) for life. And that doesn't bother. No one would judge having to be on any other medication for life.

As I've not given my back story on this thread. I am "very obese" (starting BMI of 49). 2 years ago, while having an MRI for something else, it was discovered I have bi-lateral adrenal (benign) tumours which means my cortisol and other hormones are pretty out of whack. As they're in both adrenal glands, they can't be surgically dealt with, and so my consultant suggested a trial of Mounjaro, and it's been massively helpful. I sleep again, my head is clearer (I still suffer terribly with brain fog, but have many more 'better' days than before), I've come off HRT as it seems to have fixed half my menopause symptoms, and obviously the weight loss is a very good benefit too. So, if things continue this positively, it's a "for life" thing for me.

ForeverSkys · 10/12/2024 13:07

Hi can I join you. Ordered first pen and coming tomorrow. Feeling really positive now

ForeverSkys · 10/12/2024 13:10

My story been obese most of my life weigh 152 kg and suffer from osteoarthritis of my knee. Had a gastric sleeve operation in 2018 did well but weight came back on. Been getting heavier and heavier and now at the stage I'm 46 need to sort my self out. Can't wait for my month supply coming tomorrow. Now to sort what food I can have and get a food planner and.journal . I'm ready for this. If I can tolerate a gastric sleeve and what I went through for that I can do this

BookishBabe · 10/12/2024 15:06

I'm so glad so many people are in the same boat (but also sorry you are in the same boat as me iyswim).
Sometimes it feels a bit lonely being bigger.
Jab day again tomorrow!
I felt like I had no effects at all last week, and I didn't even understand "food noise", but actually I think i was better on Sunday and I've thought about nothing but food today, even though I'm not hungry.
But I've still managed to stay within my calories, but idea of bad side effects is keeping me in control.

[Referral code removed by MNHQ]

What is everyone else eating?
Other than Sunday when i had a much smaller roast dinner than usual, I've been having premade portions like salads, Soups and myprotein ready meals. I don't know if I can cope with making my own portions yet as my mind is so skewed.

I’m curious - At that weight how are you a size 18? I’m 5’6” 13 stone and size 18-20, depending on manufacturer.

Grumpyoldthing · 10/12/2024 18:08

Hi everyone

im jumping on this thread, as I am seriously considering the jabs starting next year

for us it’s the first time that we have been able to afford them

current weight 21st 7 bmi 50.1

I have lost 12lb naturally?! Since August, by upping my steps to 10k and trying a tiny bit better with what I’m eating

however , last Thursday i slipped down a field in the rain , and busted my leg. Luckily not broken , but I’m struggling to walk with crutches, am only working mornings this week , have a cold , in pain and it feels a bit like I have completely set myself back

I’m also curious! Are you really tall? I’m 5ft 3, was 19st 2, now 17st 10 but still wearing a size 26, sometimes a 28 due to huge boobs! Can’t wait till they shrink 😂

I'm 5'7" and at 19st+ I'm a size 18, possibly a 20 if I was less stubborn about refusing to buy anything larger than an 18. Last time I was 13st+ I was just about hitting a size 14 (with a bit of stretch). I wonder how much body shape affects this, or if it's just how unhinged sizing is these days!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 18:55

I'm 5ft6 and about 21 stone and size 26.

Coffeekitten · 10/12/2024 18:55

@Bignanna @Iwouldratherbesinging
Im 5’7 but always been heavier than my dress size. At 13 stone I was a size 10.

My dad is 6’7, skinny but heavy so I’ve always put it down to genetics
