Why are people taking protein shakes? Is it recommended then?

Carlyisla · 27/10/2024 13:57

@MontyJinks well done!! I’ve been yo-yoing between 13 and 13 and a half for years so to see that 12 again I will be ecstatic!

IlovetoKnitandRead · 27/10/2024 14:02

@Fizzleaway1 Lidl vanilla protein shake was gorgeous 99p, 35g protein, 200ish calories.
@ChimneyRock I have found them useful if I don't feel like eating but am low on protein for the day
Just trying the banana flavour!

IlovetoKnitandRead · 27/10/2024 14:05

Didn't like the banana one 😂😂😂

Iwouldratherbesinging · 27/10/2024 14:11

@MontyJinks talk about a boost! That’s brilliant 🤩
@AllstarFacilier I had similar worries re meals out etc, we are all different and react differently so it’s so hard to comment. I love food, it’s not that I’m repulsed by it, it’s just I can take it or leave it and that’s a positive. I still look forward to a meal. I haven’t had any side effects apart from low grade headache on jab day and some constipation that can easily be dealt with.
I think it’s a case of learning as we go along.

I had a bit of a stumble yesterday, ate healthy food for breakfast and lunch but didn’t in the evening, we didn’t have dinner until late, couldn’t be bothered to cook anything so I had French stick and Philly cheese, I ate more than I should have and felt so stuffed and bloated for the rest of the evening!

Ordered my 2nd jab today - 5mg, feeling the same apprehension and excitement as before, I still have my last 2.5mg to use, undecided whether to use the ‘bonus’ dose to get an extra week or just go straight (impatiently) to 5mg

Iwouldratherbesinging · 27/10/2024 14:13

@IlovetoKnitandRead i bought a vanilla one yesterday to try, was in two minds, so am glad that you have recommended them

killamounjaro · 27/10/2024 14:27

@ShineyHappyPeeple I've ordered the 5mg one, and intend to decide nearer the time, I might go up to 3.75 first for a couple of weeks (45 clicks I think) or if I'm still getting good suppression on 2.5, I'll stay on that and if I need to inject a day earlier each week if I'm finding it wearing off by the end that's what I'll do.
We do have to consider the shelf life of the injection though, I'm not sure if it's just the efficacy that reduces after 30 days or if there are more serious consequences.....
I'm definitely going to use the bonus dose in this pen though, too much money to throw away,

HansHolbein · 27/10/2024 14:43

@ChimneyRock I have them because I couldn’t physically eat the amount of protein I need, so they help in that regard.

I use MyProtein Impact Whey Protein - Natural Chocolate. I do like the Lidl ones but they don’t seem to fill me up!

AllstarFacilier · 27/10/2024 15:23

So, I know this sounds silly, but do I just inject myself and then start eating less - so then I’ll lose weight? Or is there another step I’m meant to be taking? Do I substitute food for protein shakes, but feel full, and then that’s how I lose weight?

TheBoldHelper · 27/10/2024 15:27

It contains two key ingredients, a synthetic hormone that tells your brain you’re full, one we create naturally when we are full but many of us not enough of, obviously and it slows down put digestion, so that food remains in our digestive tracts and stomach longer, thus aiding us to feel full longer.

with this, we don’t want to eat as much, so we lose weight. And it also stabilises insulin, so it’s easier to lose weight.

I take physlium husk, some folks take prunes or figs, others fibro gel to stop them getting constipated, as our digestion is slower.

but basically your brain tells you you are not hungry till you are.

edit just eat normally but try to avoid fatty or too much carby food as it can make you get the runs or feel sick for some. People take protein shakes as it’s important to keep your protein up so you don’t lose muscle mass.

HansHolbein · 27/10/2024 15:30

@AllstarFacilier No, you don’t ever substitute food for protein shakes. That will never work long term when you come off the injections. You need to eat a balanced, healthy diet.

Anyone substituting their food for protein shakes or meal replacements will not make the healthy long term choices needed to make this sustainable for the rest of their life.

TheBoldHelper · 27/10/2024 15:33

Also sorry I should add, you don’t need protein shakes. I don’t have them, but I make sure to eat protein, chicken, ham, beef, eggs, and exercise, now I’ve the energy,

protein is important in any diet, as on any and every diet you can lose muscle mass and you want to lose fat.

morbidcuriosity · 27/10/2024 15:51

I've got protein shakes / powder to make for when I go up strength cos some days at the beginning I just can't face food, so it's a way to get calories and protein in for then.. cos at the start of my mounjaro journey I didn't eat for a day and half and felt really faint.. not good for you..

But if u can go without and eat sensible foods you will be ok..

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 27/10/2024 15:56

Thanks guys for recommending good protein shakes!

reading all these big losses is making me a bit sad. I’ve only lost 3lbs in 2 weeks.

Yes I'm going to try and get a bonus dose out of my 3.5mg pen too.

I'm hoping to have lost a bit more this week!

mjuser · 27/10/2024 16:15

Haven't posted for aaaages, but have been reading everything. This thread is moving so fast!

So, just thought I'd bitchplop my last weigh in. I've changed to imperial because that seems to be the norm here.

SW: 12st 11
CW: 11st 8
GW: 10st 3

Aaaaand, as I am due for my bonus dose tonight, a weekly breakdown:

Wk1 -6.8lbs
Wk2 -4lbs
Wk3 -4.4lbs
Wk4 -2.2lbs (totm, usually lose NOTHING!)

17.4lbs in total over the last 4 weeks. Still getting what I need from 2.5mg so sticking with that tonight, and will take a view next week to see if I will increase. Got a 5mg pen but not thinking I need to jump up right now.

Wish me luck with that hard twist...

AllstarFacilier · 27/10/2024 16:53

Another daft question. I’m looking at ordering through IQ doctor using a code. The 2.5 dose for around £137, do I get one pen that I use 4 times? Is that £137 everything I need for the first 4 weeks? And do I need a sharps bin?

Carlyisla · 27/10/2024 16:58

@mjuser i can’t imagine what it felt like breaking into them 11s on the scale, well done you! I’m so excited this is the most motivated I’ve been in years and hearing all your stories just motivates me even more!

ChimneyRock · 27/10/2024 17:03

Apart from my DH and my best friend (who's a consultant gastroenterologist so I asked her opinion before starting. She also spoke to her colleague who's a consultant nutritionist. Both said "go for it"), I haven't told anyone yet that I've started on this.
What have you all done? Kept it quiet? Broadcast it? Have you had any judgemental comments or are people mainly supportive.

Fizzleaway1 · 27/10/2024 17:18

@IlovetoKnitandRead - thanks, I think I have a Lidl one in my outhouse fridge I haven’t got around to trying! Il try it for breakfast tomorrow! Hopefully I like it.

@AllstarFacilier I have a protein shake as my breakfast. Nothing wrong with doing that if that’s what you want. I’m always on the go and very busy so it suits my lifestyle.

Yes. 1 pen has 4 doses in. My first order came with a sharps bin but it was a different place so can’t say for certain yours will.

@ChimneyRock my husband & mother know I’m taking it. I haven’t told anyone else yet but if they asked then I’d tell them.

Ye that's all you need but there's a bigger discount to be had at iqdoctor

AllstarFacilier · 27/10/2024 17:21

Thanks! That’s the regular price, the code takes it down to £110 delivered

EVK · 27/10/2024 17:28

@ChimneyRock - I’ve not told a soul and intend to keep it that way ! Obviously,
I very told all of you 🤣 Some amazing losses going on. Mine have been relatively small
compared to some but I’m still very happy with a 2-3 lbs a week. I’m feeling much better this week D2 W4 and am not experiencing any side effects - still getting decent suppression so hopefully my next 2.5 pen will keep
me going. I too am going to try for the bonus dose - I’m paying a lot more than most of you with Asda but kind of feel like I should stay with them as don’t want to risk being turned down now I’m in the overweight category with lower BMI than when I started.

whoever was asking about the pen. One pen has 4-5 weeks of doses in it so yes you only buy one the month. You do need a sharps bin. You don’t have to take protein shakes but they can be useful if struggling to eat.
you need good sources of protein to support muscle mass and lots of exercise!!! Weight bearing 💪😂

AllstarFacilier · 27/10/2024 17:39

Thanks all! I’ve ordered 😬 Just had to upload some photos of myself along with it. Do I need the sharps bin straight away - does the needle come off at week one, or do I just need it for week 4 when I bin the pen?

How is it that some pens do 4 or 5 weeks? I keep reading about an extra dose for some

You use a new needle each time you use the pen so they will send you 4 needles with the pen.

IQ doctor actually sent me 5 when I ordered my 5mg pen with them.
