Continuing Mounjaro...part 16

ObsidianTree · 08/07/2024 15:59

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30. If you have additional health conditions you can get the medication with a BMI 27. (Prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems)

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Some people find that they don't need to go up a pen dose each month if the current pen dosage is working well for them. If you are unsure when to go up, speak to your prescriber.

8 - If you are having bad side effects after titrating up or you are struggling to eat your calories each day, your dose may be too high so should consider lowering your dose. Speak to your prescriber if unsure.

9 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

10 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

11 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

12 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

13 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

14 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Try and drink at least 2ltrs a day.

15 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

16 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

17 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

18 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

20- You will still be prescribed Mounjaro when your BMI falls below 30. However, it may be harder to move suppliers once you BMI is below 30 if you wanted to move.

21 - Worried about your supply being cut off when you get to a healthy BMI? Below is some info on some places maintenance plans.

The Family chemist :Would consult you as approached healthy BMI to discuss maintenance under close supervision(if you started with family chemist)
Curate: up to 2 years
Cloud: up to 2 years
Boots: Cut off at BMI 23
Asda: Cut off at a healthy BMI
Pharmacy2u: Will supply for maintenance
Bolt:Individual assessment once BMI 22 and does offer maintenance
Zava:Once healthy BMI will stop prescribing this treatment

22 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Summerheels · 18/07/2024 09:37

My contribution to the collective if you need a strategy that folk understand I’m good at taking lots of scientific and other data & writing into plain English to sell it to your stakeholders for funding.

Late to the party but I work in IT as a business analyst. I can help model the business processes and look for efficiencies and define our deliverables (1. Make money, 2. Banging uniform 3. Christmas party)

imnottoofussed · 18/07/2024 09:58

We just need someone with the startup funds now 😂

Ok lost my nerve to wait! I'll post this now, but let's finish this thread before moving to next one ☺️ thanks all.

Just a thought, might be worth adding to the initial post that if people "watch" the thread then they don't need to post a place marker? Would help the threads last a bit longer maybe 😊

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 18/07/2024 10:20

Can I amend the deliverables from

(1. Make money, 2. Banging uniform 3. Christmas party

To

  1. Spread the word about this wonder drug
  2. Research into the positive side effects and then the above

Although I'm not too bothered about making money as, whilst it would be nice, I am more concerned about telling people that they don't have to feel like a fat failure if they can't lose weight through will power alone.

I do feel like a hypocrit saying that as, other than DH, no one else knows I'm on this so I'm not exactly spreading the word in my personal life!

Time4changeagain · 18/07/2024 10:30

@Madferitchick
How do you just watch the thread? I’ve never been able to do it without posting first. I’m new to MN so haven’t got a clue lol

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/07/2024 10:39

Financial services lawyer here I’ll organise the stock market float that will make us all squillionaires.

Ghilliedu · 18/07/2024 10:43

Senior UX/UI designer here so I can make sure the front end of the website is user friendly and looking amazing 🤣

I have finally managed to take 3.75mg without being violently ill! That’s been 48 hours and I’m fine aside from a headache yesterday. However, I have zero suppression and haven’t lost any weight for 2 weeks. I know I need to get up to 5 but I’m so scared of the vomiting

DragonflyRuby · 18/07/2024 10:49

Just catching up, loving the Mumsnet coop pharmacy!

Stayed the same this week (last week of 5mg) but I’m due on my period and that happened the last time too. Hopeful for a whoosh next week.

Has anyone else found they’re loosing weight in different places to previous attempts? When I’ve dieted before it’s always come off my boobs and top half first and my bum and hips have been very resistant (I’m a true pear shape!). On MJ my hips have slimmed 2.5 inches in the last 2 months and my bra size is still the same. I’ve definitely lost bloating from my face etc but predominantly the weight appears to be coming of hips and thighs first which I am delighted about! I wonder if it’s to do with hormonal weight distribution??

NGO director and strategy lead here - I'll muck in with the business analysts and help frame the what we dos and how we do its. And, when we've made those squillions, I'll help set up a charitable foundation to help people access MJ when they can't afford to pay for their own. Love it!

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 18/07/2024 10:59

@Ghilliedu thank goodness you can do UX, I'm definitely a back end developer 😂

WoolyMammoth55 · 18/07/2024 11:00

@Ghilliedu SO SO so glad that you took 3.75 ok! I remember a few threads ago you were thinking you had to quit it... You can go from here to 4 next week, then 4.25... No need to leap straight up to 5 if you're worried about a puke repeat. I staggered all my jumps, just a bit more each week, and am on 7.5 now without much side-effects.

Also amazing that you do UI/UX design! I'm a career-switcher into tech, currently full-stack but in a fairly back-end heavy company... About to have my first ever mid-year review 😅and seriously considering if I can make a lateral move into PMing or prod ops because I think my comms skills add more value than my baby-code! But it's a grand adventure! (And a big factor in my pre-MJ stress eating...)

Goes without saying that I'm up for playing any useful small role in MNJaro, tribe, if you need me! Otherwise I'll just buy pom poms and cheerlead from the sidelines!

camerontucker · 18/07/2024 11:01

Late to the party too. I work in Tesco so can get 15% off our lunch meal deals and 20% of clothing(45% when there's an event). We are all going to need a new wardrobe with all the weight lost and we need to look smart for any meetings 😂

There is a button at the top and at the bottom of each thread that says "Watch thread", click on that then you can always find it in notifications or under the "I'm watching" tab
It saves wasting posts on dots which irritate a lot of people

Snozzlemaid · 18/07/2024 11:31

@NewLifter Just to update you on Zava delivery, mines just arrived this morning.
Was approved on Monday but clearly not packaged until yesterday as pharmacy label has yesterday's date on it.
I was told expected delivery was Thursday to Tuesday so arrived on first day.
Fingers crossed you get yours so promptly too when you're able to be at home.

ThirdStorm · 18/07/2024 11:33

Good grief I go away on business for a day and come back to 6 pages of us setting up our own MN pharmacy!! And whoever first said, what a bunch of highlight skilled people we are, I agree. Fascinating to see all the occupations - very impressive.

imnottoofussed · 18/07/2024 11:43

Also you can bookmark. So if you've been reading the thread and not got to the end press the bookmark on the comment that you've read up to and when you open the thread again it takes you straight to that location.

How do I go about this medexpress price matching does anyone know? I can order my next one now I'm getting another 7.5. Will I need to find the price elsewhere and send to medexpress before or after ordering?

ThirdStorm · 18/07/2024 11:49

After your order, email them about price matching. I imagine you will have to tell them who are you price matching against with evidence. They say they will credit your account.

Thanks @WoolyMammoth55 it feels like an achievement to get here! I stayed on 3mg for so long and then titrated up about 3 clicks at a time which seems ridiculous but necessary for me! I also switched to injecting in my thigh which also helped. Plan is definitely for 4mg next week and see how that goes!

also, I am all about the career switch ups. I started out as a journalist then got into MarComms and eventually retrained in UX/UI in my own time. Been doing that a few years and now thinking about a move to Service Design as I enjoy that aspect of my job more. I definitely think you could make the move - at my last job (public sector) quite a few of the devs moved into PM and PO roles quite easily and successfully! Go for it!
