Continuing Mounjaro...part 16

ObsidianTree · 08/07/2024 15:59

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30. If you have additional health conditions you can get the medication with a BMI 27. (Prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems)

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Some people find that they don't need to go up a pen dose each month if the current pen dosage is working well for them. If you are unsure when to go up, speak to your prescriber.

8 - If you are having bad side effects after titrating up or you are struggling to eat your calories each day, your dose may be too high so should consider lowering your dose. Speak to your prescriber if unsure.

9 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

10 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

11 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

12 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

13 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

14 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Try and drink at least 2ltrs a day.

15 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

16 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

17 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

18 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

Place marking! On Jab 1 week 1 of 2.5mg

Louboo3 · 08/07/2024 18:32

Hello, I’m rubbish at all things ‘maths’ so not at all confident in trying to work this out myself. I’m due to have my last 5mg jab tomorrow and can’t decide if to use the bonus dose next week as another 5mg or try to work out how much 2.5 mg of the bonus dose would be to effectively start on 7.5mg tomorrow (last 5mg plus 2.5 of bonus dose. Coups anyone please tell me how I’d calculate 2.5mg?

If I decide to save the bonus dose for next week, I prime every time (my son is type 1 diabetic and many times we have had faulty needles so I don’t want to risk it) will there be enough left to make up 5mg bonus dose as I don’t want to end up having less Next week than this week

Thebaldprimadonna · 08/07/2024 18:39

Place marking 😁

Well….
3.75 is giving me very real suppression and I could fall asleep on a washing line!

Oh me too! 3.75 injected on Saturday and I had to go to bed for a few hours this afternoon after work. Utterly drained. Normally revived after a snoozette but not today. Early bed for me. I couldn't function like this all the time and hoping it passes.

Mencia · 08/07/2024 19:09

Checking in with a NSV.

Summer sale 2017, I bought a very nice pair of Ted Baker jeans, size 32. I couldn’t do the button but thought I could fit into them in no time (they were ‘small’ as at the time I had more generous size 32s and these were tight and no elastan).
Hahaha, I kind of ballooned after that.
Well, I worn them yesterday for the very first time.

BlackFriYay · 08/07/2024 17:18

Checking in to follow the thread.

3 stone 2.5lbs lost in total.

13 stone 8lbs down to 10 stone 5.7lbs.

1 stone 2.7lbs left to lose to get to my goal weight of 9 stone 3lbs.

4 pens in - currently on week 2 of my first 7.5mg.

Wow, amazing!

How many weeks has it taken? Is it about 17?

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 08/07/2024 19:21

@camerontucker @Beeble21 first 5mg Thursday. I was soooo exhausted on Friday. My eyes were stinging, couldn't concentrate, caffeine wasn't doing anything. Never been as tired since I had a newborn.

Aw thanks 🤗

It'll be 16 weeks tomorrow I started 🙂

cappycap · 08/07/2024 19:32

@BlackFriYay

You've done really well. It's so inspiring reading people's success.

I will be taking my 3rd injection Friday and started at 13st 6lb so it's great to see a similar starting weight and the progress you've made. Really motivating!

What was 2.5 like for you? I'm debating going straight up to 5 mainly because 2.5 suppression was hardly there towards the two week mark.

summerlovingvibes · 08/07/2024 20:06

Place marking to catch up on thread later once my monster children are finally asleep 😂

Lastchancefatty · 08/07/2024 20:11

I've just been referred to weight management by my gp but think by the time I get there I'll probably not qualify anyway 😁

My GP referred me but they rejected me as my BMI was 39.7 and they said it needed to be over 40 Hmm
I suppose it is a blessing that I am not fat enough or sick enough but it's still irritating

Hi, has anybody on here tried the injection in the arm? All of the YouTube videos I've seen have said its really painful, like a bee sting and hurts for hours after. But some have said the same about the thigh and I don't think that hurt very much at all 🤔

I was bmi 43 when I started a few weeks ago. I doubt I'll be bmi over 40 by the time I get there. They reckon at least 8 months. I'd rather pay than just sit and wait. It's something I actually can do about it myself so I'm not stopping on the off chance they'll actually help me

ObsidianTree · 08/07/2024 20:32

Thought I would ask on here about this.

I was doing some googling on why my heart rate could be high, and I read that hyper thyroid can caught this. I am usually underactive so not something I've experienced before. So wondering if Mounjaro has meant that my need for levothyroxine had reduced. I do have hashimoto so technically my thyroid problems could swing both ways, but never went hyper before.

Has anyone else that has an underactive thyroid checked their resting heart rate? Is it higher than usual?

I have a blood test coming up to check my thyroid levels to confirm, but think I will reduce my meds a bit just incase. Will try and get a Dr appointment asap I think so they confirm I can lower my dose.

I have tried arm once. It didn't hurt that I noticed. I didn't feel like I had any suppression that week though!

I may just stick with stomach and thigh for now then and just try the arm as a last resort.

I don't have personal experience but this actually makes perfect since, you could well now be over treated! I hope you can get bloods done soon.
