Continuing Mounjaro...part 14

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 18:50

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

Don't know if anyone has tried to stack?

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 25/06/2024 12:24

Very late to this thread but glad I've found it!
I've just started 10mg and it's been a game-changer. My appetite has (finally) fallen off a cliff and for the first time in my life I'm having to really think about eating. I have a 40g of protein shake in the morning with some ground linseed which has helped avoid constipation, a salad or soup/crackers for lunch, protein yoghurt late afternoon and little or nothing in the evening. I'm hoping this might be the dose I can stick at for a bit but we'll see.

AgathaMystery · 25/06/2024 12:32

CiderJabs · 24/06/2024 23:12

@AgathaMystery I like the grape one from my protein. Also quite like the strawberry kiwi and peach tea. I can send you a referral link that will give you £10 off your first order (and I'll also get £10 off my next one!)

Yes please!!

Lastchancefatty · 25/06/2024 12:36

@susiedaisy1912 I am on the Glp1 plan with ww. I like it 😊

guestusername · 25/06/2024 12:39

This might be an odd question but why spend a lot of money on MJ in the first place and then chuck even more money at WW?

RunningAndSinging · 25/06/2024 12:44

The same reason as you might calorie count or join a gym? WW provide support meetings and advice about what to eat when taking Mounjaro or Wegovy in a much more detailed way than the providers do. It didn’t suit me but I liked the idea of it and Boots recommended it and gave a discount.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 25/06/2024 12:44

@imnottoofussed the larger pots seem to be consistently out of stock in the nicer flavours and rarely get re-stocked. I've spent an absolute fortune at myprotein since starting MJ, would never have even considered using it before. I blame @ObsidianTree for posting her referral back in the first few threads 😜

There aren't any on offer at Boots this week but they had multiple flavours a couple of weeks ago. They're the same size as the pots at Sainsburys but a couple of quid cheaper. About half the size of the ones direct from myprotein.

If anyone needs a referral code mine is

www.myprotein.com/referrals.list?applyCode=SARAH-R1XB3

Or just use SARAH-R1XB3 when creating an account.

The code is now for £10 but they occasionally boost it to £20.

Just had my first 2.5 dose last week, due my 2nd tomorrow. A question about the 5th bonus dose...
I've tried searching but can't find an answer, Are people using it to have a larger 4th dose or using it for an actual 5th dose on the 5th week? Delaying the start of a new pen?

The latter. A 5th dose for a 5th week, meaning you start a new pen every 5 weeks instead of 4

imnottoofussed · 25/06/2024 12:54

I've used mine as an extra week but that's because I had good suppression so didn't want to increase dosage. If you're not getting good suppression and want to move up to 5mg then take it at the same time as dose 4 so you are moving up earlier. Be aware though that some people can't handle the jump from 2.5 to 5mg so you might not want to use the whole extra dose anyway

I personally seem to have no problems other than occasional acid indigestion with any of the doses so far or with any food types that others seem to have problems with

Ballyguin · 25/06/2024 13:00

My pen arrived today 🙂. It’s in the fridge until Thursday, which will be by jabbing day. I’m nervous about bowel effects as I’ve had some problems in that area recently so need to know I’ll be close to the loo just in case, which I can be from Friday to Tuesday if necessary.

Also arrived are protein powders (thank you for the code @MelissaLouRocks 🙂)

I’m going to try making my own electrolyte drinks using this recipe and have ordered some calcium magnesium powder too. Looking forward to posting progress!

Homemade Electrolyte Drink (With Flavor Options)

This homemade electrolyte drink is a tasty and natural alternative to store-bought sports drinks. Full of flavor and healthy minerals!

KeepingUndercover · 25/06/2024 13:00

@sp3418 the 2.5mg pen is the only one where the bonus dose would give you the equivalent of a next pen. I found the jump from 2.5 to 5mg really hard, so I would not recommend jumping up in week 4. Another week gives more time for it to build in your body and get used to the drug.

For all the other pens, if you used your bonus dose you'd be leapfrogging the next pen, so definitely don't do that!

I’m already with WW, so it’s interesting to me. My subscription ends in August so I’ll have a look at the new plan (when I find it, I’ve looked but can’t see it)

CiderJabs · 25/06/2024 13:05

What I've discovered re protein shakes is that it's a bloody minefield. They all advertise big reductions and prices per tub and it's not always clear how much you're payout per serving.

With my protein specifically, they seem to do a new offer every day so it's a case of being patient and checking. Last week I got 4 tins of 20 servings each for £60 and free delivery so that's 75p per serving. Today the offer is not as good so worth holding on unless you're desperate!

Stickthatupyourdojo · 25/06/2024 13:07

Thanks @CiderJabs I'm wanting to place an order as I've got clear whey from protein works but it makes my drink so gloopy and gross so fancy trying the fruity my protein ones instead. Today's pay day so trying to avoid spending all of my money but I've got trigger finger. Going to order another pen too, which I'm hoping will be my last.

CiderJabs · 25/06/2024 13:20

@Stickthatupyourdojo I've gone off the creamy ones as well. I now drink one or two fruity ones everyday. What flavours are you going for?

Stickthatupyourdojo · 25/06/2024 13:23

@CiderJabs I'm thinking orange and mango sounds quite nice, have you tried that one? Are there any you really rate/dislike?

CiderJabs · 25/06/2024 13:26

Stickthatupyourdojo · 25/06/2024 13:23

@CiderJabs I'm thinking orange and mango sounds quite nice, have you tried that one? Are there any you really rate/dislike?

I quite like the orange and mango, strawberry & kiwi, grape and even dragon fruit. I bought a sample pack - the only ones I didn't like were pineapple / watermelon / mojito !

Stickthatupyourdojo · 25/06/2024 13:27

Oh fab that sounds promising! I really need to pull my finger out and get better at ensuring I'm having enough protein, nutrients etc.

imnottoofussed · 25/06/2024 13:37

I like orange and mango too it's my favourite. Definitely dilute it more than the instructions though. I do mine in up to 1 litre of water instead although the vimto one I only like when I dilute to about 500ml

I haves the pineapple and the mojito but I know some people do like those.

Maybe try the sample pack like some of us did. You get 10 individual sachets

imnottoofussed · 25/06/2024 13:37

*hated

RagzRebooted · 25/06/2024 13:48

Popped to Lidl in my lunch break and bought those protein bars, thanks to whoever posted those.
I tried the clear whey and didn't like it, but maybe that was the flavour (grapefruit) though my teen sons like it. I'm not great with artificial sweetener flavour. I have a tub of the cloudy lemonade one but haven't dared try it yet.

summerlovingvibes · 25/06/2024 13:49

@KeepingUndercover what do you mean by "leapfrogging" the next pen?
