Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

17 - Some of the places you can order from are:

I have been up since the middle of the night with horrific stomach cramps and the runs. I feel horrendous! Today is day 6 of the week and I'm on my second pen of 7.5mg so not sure where this has come from, likely a bug or eaten something dodgy? I feel so guilty I've had to miss work but I'm not well at all.

It has meant I'm finally 9 stone 13 (and 7/8s!!!) however, after a couple of weeks of barely losing.

I am so ill again been up all night with D&V not sure if I just can’t cope with anything higher than 2.5mg or just bad luck. Had to get an Uber to work as I didn’t trust myself on public transport

I don’t do Facebook

This thread is all I need for my MJ journey!

There is a rather lovey and sensible Mumsnet group for MJ users on there?

Fromthesidelines · 24/06/2024 09:13

@Jpeg24 No expertise but, if it was me, I don't think I'd risk 5mg with a fragile tummy and a bit of a gap.

TheGoddessFrigg · 24/06/2024 09:29

Okay. This might sound as if I am being a bit of a thick about this- but please bear in mind I am AuADHD and simple things cause me more confusion than complicated things 😋
I have just moved onto the 5mil pen. So is one dose of the pen 5mil or do I need to do two doses?

One dose is 0.6ml, and contains 5mg on the 5mg pen.

Urgh, very tired yesterday after no sleep the previous night. Opted for a takeaway. I ordered a small chicken kebab and could only manage the chicken and salad (gave the bread to DH). Also has some wine. I feel AWFUL this morning.

hornetgirl · 24/06/2024 09:49

I've completely gone off alcohol which is a surprising benefit.

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 24/06/2024 09:52

I've mostly gone off alcohol too so I don't know why I did it.

MelissaLouRocks · 24/06/2024 10:00

Bolt have accepted me, so hopefully now I'll have no problems with maintenance. Fingers crossed!

KeepingUndercover · 24/06/2024 10:10

Huge day! I've hit double digits. Week 15 and I've lost 20.2kg to take me into the 90s. I'm so pleased! It was the big milestone I was hoping to hit. Still a long way to go, but it feels doable.

crochetmylifeaway · 24/06/2024 10:13

I took my first 7.5 last night and I'm not even remotely hungry. On the lower doses I felt able to eat in the mornings but today I can't decide what I want to eat and feel no hunger whatsoever. Haven't even had a cup of coffee today yet.

If only MJ was around when my dad was alive. He was type 2 diabetic and struggled with his diet. He ended up with a quadruple heart by-pass, a leg amputation and being totally blind when he died. I do not want to go down the same path. I have the money and want to spend it on having a healthier future.

I am BMI 30 and have gained 3 stone in 3 years since losing my parents.

It’s heartbreaking isn’t it? Same with my FIL and diabetes leading to an early death.

I just hope recognition is given to how much these drugs can change outcomes for people- and access can be widened for all. I’m happy to pay, but would like to see those who can’t pay getting it on the NHS.

What is the food industry going to do if this does happen? Pivot to healthier and more wholesome foods?

Did they accept you with a BMI already under 30?

easterbuns1 · 24/06/2024 10:21

Would someone mind sharing the graphic that shows how many clicks for each dose in the pens please? The one for increasing gradually. I've had a look but can't find it when there's so many pages.

Thank you!

NSV… I’m wearing shorts for the first time since my 20s! (reminder I’m one of the 42 year olds so estimate it’s about 15 years since I dared to bare my legs in public!). I’m looking at my legs, which are so much slimmer and dare I say they actually look quite sexy! I NEVER thought I’d say that about my legs- I can’t believe how much weight I was carrying there- I thought I just had chunky legs like my dad 😂

My belly still looks bloated and round but for now I will take the little win and enjoy wearing shorts this summer.

Btw if you’re looking for nice shorts I got my linen ones from Tesco (in store only) and jersey shorts (with Amalfi tile print) from Sainsbury’s. Both very flattering and comfortable.

Talking about clothes recommendations… Thank you @AgathaMystery for the Oliver Bonas dress recommendation which I purchased on a whim and it looks fantastic- a bit like one of those Vampires Wife dresses in terms of the cut. My mum sewed up the arms as I couldn’t be doing with the flappiness!

MelissaLouRocks · 24/06/2024 10:32

RunningAndSinging · 24/06/2024 10:18

Did they accept you with a BMI already under 30?

Yes, but then I also have comorbid conditions that make me eligible with a BMI of 27.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/06/2024 10:36

FINALLY got under 12st this morning. Seemed like it took forever. I took my first 10mg on Saturday and thankfully don't seem to be unwell as feared. Feel a little nauseous, but nothing too bad.

I'm a couple of pounds off a 4st loss so I'll be really happy when I reach that target. I'll still have 2st minimum to go after that for a healthy bmi so still a long way to go!

misspositivepants · 24/06/2024 10:36

Jumping on here. Took my first dose ever so 2.5mls last night.

Weighed this morning too, I’d had a bit of a last horah at the weekend, so heavier than when I ordered the pen last week but it’ll be mostly water weight.

RunningAndSinging · 24/06/2024 10:36

Ahh. I am not sure if we have had anyone yet confirm a change of supplier with a BMI under 30 and no other conditions.

Thank you!

A full dose for each pen no matter what the strength is 60 clicks. So a half dose of the pen you are using is 30 clicks.
So for example if you have a 5mg pen but only want to inject 2.5mg this week you would turn the pen 30 clicks rather than keep twisting until it hit the number 1.

5 âž— 60 (clicks) = 0.083 x 30= 2.5mg

If you have a 7.5mg pen but only want to take 5mg dose this week you would do 40 clicks.

7.5 âž— 60 = 0.125 x 40= 5mg.

susiedaisy1912 · 24/06/2024 10:41

This shows the different doses.
