Continuing Mounjaro Thread 11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
Boots £219 +
Chemist4U £179 +
Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Can anyone recommend something for constipation? The first few weeks I had diarrhoea a lot which was actually preferable as it wasn’t painful and I felt it was quite cleansing 😂 but now I feel very backed up and not seeing much weight change this week.

Aloe Vera tablets. Very gentle but effective.

lurkylurk · 05/06/2024 19:14

@Soulstirring

That's interesting, I've seen a lot of people say they did really well on Saxenda until it became unavailable. Part of the reason they developed other GLP1s was so people didn't have to inject every day but that wouldn't bother me and it might smooth out side effects a bit. If the patent is up surely someone will make it a lot cheaper! (Although you can't get it all now).

ObsidianTree · 05/06/2024 19:27

That sounds like it @lurkylurk. It's mainly when I'm eating and swallowing. Very weird

I know that some people don’t want their GP to know about these meds - but…. And this is not directed at you PP…

Think very carefully about a supplier that actively does not inform your GP. None of these companies are supplying this drug for altruistic reasons. They are making mega money. By not informing your GP they save significant admin time, thus keep more profit.

The only looser or person at risk for your GP not knowing is you. Yes, it is annoying when rpt Rx are cancelled - mine was because I needed a BP review. It was sorted out in 20 mins.

These drugs don’t work in isolation.

Completely agree with this!! I had a very interesting conversation with someone this week about cloud pharmacy (it's showing up as one of the cheapest on the table). Apparently a couple of this persons friends have just started Ozempic. She hadn't heard of it and when I explained about weightloss medication she was shocked because neither friend is above bmi 30 and never have been (size 8 to 10 all their lives she would guess). Definitely sounds dodgy and put me in mind of the South Park episode about obesity!!!x

I took Saxenda. It was excellent but MJ is wayyyyyy beyond it.

CiderJabs · 05/06/2024 19:49

I took saxenda and it did very little for me. Lost about 7-8lbs and stalled. Still had heartburn all the time. I gave it up before the supply issues. MJ has been completely different thankfully

FastGoose · 05/06/2024 20:02

@ObsidianTree I've experienced it tonight for the first time. A very weird sensation that actually made me stop eating the last of my dinner. It currently feels like pressure in a part of my throat currently.

Just realised I posted this twice with edits 😂

Yes it feels weird. Put me off eating for sure!

Odd side effects!

I'm watching the south park episode on weight loss drugs. It's really good actually. It's on paramount +

Rulay · 05/06/2024 21:01

I'm doing crap at getting fluids in atm. I just don't want to drink anything! Not even cups of tea. Trying to force some sparkling water in now.

Rulay · 05/06/2024 21:17

Apologies if this has already been shared. Interesting Guardian article about how the jabs potentially reduce the risk of various cancers, and not just because of the effect of weight loss. https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/04/weight-loss-drugs-cut-cancer-risk-fifth-research-wegovy?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1uXZtgp2L6tLbpDnsS229x6xQivRcca8jMRZzBDyT3gqwFLFj1eYD6V0aemmAdxdTznZsGZC-XF7ah8LKULOmNr0y1RC-jxmxuQbOMOypxCKD8_dgqAz2lzFAEaH--k9peMhmoJF7PbKd5kfXjMv

Hi everyone ! Can someone help me please ?

I've slowly moved up to nearly 5 mg a week now.

Last week I did 50 clicks of the 5 mg pen. The suppression was amazing for the first 3 days. Very strong, maybe a bit too strong.

However since day 4, there's been very little suppression. I've found that with all my doses so far. The first 3 days is great and after that, not so much anymore.

Is there a way to make it last longer ? Or are some people doing split dosing during the week ?

Thanks !

Totally found this too.
I’ve been splitting my dose since week one.
Ive had no side effects at all except suppression until last week (4th week of 7.5 mg) Now eggy burps and diarrhoea. Im on to 10 mg now and took 5mg on Monday and due another 5 tomorrow, but think I may give it a miss. I’ve still 10kg to lose but can’t be like this at work.

lurkylurk · 05/06/2024 21:31

@AgathaMystery @CiderJabs

Got it on the relative ineffectiveness of Saxenda in comparison, seeing as I've stalled for a few weeks now on Mounjaro, don't think it would be of much use then!

That sounds like me on Mounjaro! Lost about 9 pounds and have stalled but still have heartburn all the time.

GingerNugget · 05/06/2024 22:06

Just a query if anyone understands the science, I read that glp-1 meds like Mounjaro increase the amount of insulin released when you eat in order to bring blood sugar down. However I also read that in the presence of high insulin that the body doesn't burn fat. Also isn't higher insulin bad? I am on Mounjaro so I am just curious to the science if anyone can explain?

It's glucose dependent, so in the absence of glucose to get rid of, it won't do that so insulin won't be high all the time.

Hellijoy · 05/06/2024 22:24

Out of interest, has anyone suffered from dry skin on MJ? I naturally have dry skin but since taking my first 2.5mg I’ve noticed my face is definitely drier than usual

Rozie1234 · 05/06/2024 22:25

Yeah that has happened to me. I never had flabby thighs but after loosing 1stone my inner thighs are horrible.

Habbyhadno · 05/06/2024 23:06

Hi everyone. So, I've just finished week two on Mounjaro, due my third 2.5ml jab tomorrow and it's not working at all. I've put on 3lb since my start weight, I've had little to no appetite suppression or side effects at all. I'm baffled.

I had previously been on the starter dose of Wegovy for 6 weeks and then took a month off before starting Mounjaro, and for me the Wegovy worked like a dream. On the lowest dose I lost 2 stone in a month and had a really suppressed appetite and made very healthy choices, which I'm not on Mounjaro, should I switch back?

AgathaMystery · 05/06/2024 23:10

You’re not on a therapeutic dose yet. Read post one of page one of this thread. You need to titrate up to a therapeutic dose which takes over 2mths.

Habbyhadno · 05/06/2024 23:12

Well yes, but I wasn't on the therapeutic dose of Wegovy either and that worked really well for me straight away. So money and time wise that was much more efficient.

I thought Mounjaro was meant to be more effective and it was the same price for both, so I swapped over.

Wonkypictureframe · 05/06/2024 23:39

If you’ve recently lost two stones in a month (which is remarkable, my goodness) then your body may be plateauing a bit.
