Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

That's really interesting, @VanellopeVonSchweetz99. Thank you. I fit the 4Fs too!

Hello lovely ladies! So I was a bit worried about weigh in this week, I'm on my 8th week of MJ (currently on 5mg) and not yet hit a stall and thought it might be this week - I was away for the weekend and did a lot of exercise but also didn't have access to any of my usual healthy food, all that was offered on site was sausages in buns, bacon butties, chips etc. I tried to moderate but was hungry from all the extra exercise!
However, weighing today and I've still managed to lose 2lbs this week, taking my total loss over eight weeks to 29lbs! I still have a lot left to go (to hit a healthy BMI I need to lose 9 stone, I've not weighed that in 20 years so I can't even imagine it being possible and instead I'm aiming to lose 7 and re evaluate.
I've decided another course of 5mg as it's going quite well for me, I have had the odd side effect of nausea but nothing significant and I'm still losing weight.
How is everyone else doing?

catgirl1976 · 10/05/2024 07:08

Hello lovely new people!I have now finished week 1.

My appetite came back a bit yesterday - day 6 - which isn’t a bad thing as I was worried about how little I was eating. I’ve also got my period. My weight has jumped up a bit this morning but….I’ve still lost 9lb in a week so I am delighted.2nd injection tonight.

Fully expecting the loss to slow this week but if I can lose 5 pounds in the next week or two that willl be one stone down and and four and a bit to go.

Good luck everyone!

Menora · 10/05/2024 07:45

@TryingAgainAgainAgain its just best to get it all checked I think. Mine will have to come out one day I imagine! Rapid weight loss is a common cause of gallstones but it’s also very closely linked to semaglutides, when I looked it was a clear warning that it could cause gallbladder issues. Best to have all these bloods done and check your liver too. I hope all is ok

So I went on a trip. I walked about 40 miles on this trip (my legs and toenails are not thanking me) but it was impossible to calorie count at all, and options were really challenging. I ended up eating mostly bread based foods as I have an idea of calories in bread but with lots of walking, flying, bread etc I have gained a kg in a few days. It’s not terrible but I need to make sure I don’t continue to stop working towards my goal. I am frustrated it’s a blip that sets me back further as it takes me a whole month to lose 3lbs nowadays! It might just be water retention 🤞🏼

Lanesdown · 10/05/2024 07:48

Hi all. Week one completed for me. No symptoms so far, other than the light spotting in the run up to my period starting a week early. I've eaten normally but significantly less, it's been wonderful. My whole life I've just wanted to not feel hungry, to be able to eat normal portions, and I got to experience that this week. Hope it continues!!! I lost 7lb. Hoping for 1-2lb a week. I'd like to lose 100lb as a minimum for now.

Kanoe2 · 10/05/2024 09:19

I've been lurking on the thread all week but wanted to give thanks to everyone who has shared their hints and tips, especially the nutritional advice I've found that really helpful.

Week 1 complete and 8 pounds down. I have resisted the urge to weigh myself all week as it had previously become an unhealthy obsession and triggering to self sabotage on previous weight loss journeys.

I won't lie I found day 2 and 3 pretty hideous - fatigue, heartburn, cold, weird heavy feeling in my stomach. The advice on this thread really helped, I think all of this was due to dramatic change in my calorie intake. I've started having small healthy meals even if just a few bites due to no appetite to sustain

sounds silly but I have driven the school run for the past yr as i had gotten to the point my calf muscle would cramp whilst walking. I have walked it all week and this morning didn't have any cramps at all. I'm feeling really hopeful moving into week 2.

This also happened to me week one! I found that having my period made me a bit hungrier but it evened out the next week again!

WoolyMammoth55 · 10/05/2024 13:42

Well done everyone on the losses! I weighed today and did my second jab, I'm 7lbs down which feels great!

2 things I'm slightly concerned about, and would really appreciate advice on:

First, I got a slight stick from the back of the needle when wrestling with the crappy sharps bin Voy sent me... I feel not too terrified because the cap was on, the part that had injected me was covered - it was the back part of the needle that screws into the pen, and punctures the red seal.
So I assume that's not much of an infection risk - but can anyone knowledgeable advise? I can't think of the right terms to use to get any good info out of google...

Second my period, usually clockwork regular, was due last Sunday, 2 days after my first dose. Still not arrived yet! I'm done with kids so no fertility concerns but still a bit perplexing... Anyone else had their cycle affected? I have literally never been 5 days late for my period before in my life!

Other than that I've got my first Voy coaching call in an hour so looking forward to that. And generally feeling good about this being my Friday routine for the next year or so - I am in this for the marathon not the sprint...

Also very excited for us all! 🤗

KeepingUndercover · 10/05/2024 14:39

Well done on losses!

I am getting back into exercise as I know I need that along side dietary changes. I’ve been swimming this week and started couch to 5k. I know exercise is meant to give you energy, but it always makes me want a nap!

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 10/05/2024 14:44

@WoolyMammoth55 ah the bastard back end needle prick! So many of us did that on the old thread, hurts like hell but shouldn't be any more dangerous than a paper cut.

Periods: I remember I and several others got surprising spottings in the first months - me at 50, and with a hormone IUS!

@Menora you know it's 100% water retention, not fat gain. 1g carbohydrate holds on to 3g of water. Don't give it a second thought, just get back to doing what you have been doing so brilliantly. Blips will happen, really no big deal.
I heard this from a lovely guy who trains stars before movies + oversees their diet: "Think of the 17/20 rule. As long as 17 meals of 20 of your meals are nutritionally sound, you can be more relaxed about 3. Because life is also for living and to be enjoyed, and if you never allowed yourself a lovely pasta/pizza and some wine, what's the point?"

KeepingUndercover · 10/05/2024 14:54

@WoolyMammoth55 I've done that exact thing trying to get the needle in the sharps bin and it was fine. I now always put them in that end first.

catgirl1976 · 10/05/2024 18:05

My appetite is back with a bang today (day 7)

I'll be doing my second injection later but I am actually going to have a (small) portion of the Indian takeaway we are getting tonight to celebrate DS's parents evening. I am more than happy with the weight lost and thinking I'll maybe do this each week - if I am hungry on a Friday evening before my injection, I'll have something nice (just a much smaller portion that I have previously) and hopefully I won't get bored or start feeling deprived of treats (I don't currently I just haven't been able to face them whereas tonight I feel like I could eat and enjoy it for the first time)

ClonedSquare · 10/05/2024 18:47

@catgirl1976 sounds like a good plan to me!

I'm on day 2 and still no negative side effects. Like yesterday, I've not been hungry or actively thinking about food. But I haven't been averse to it either. It's my birthday so had a pub meal for dinner and ate the same amount I usually would (but ate a lot less during the rest of the day so I don't feel too bad). Before I'd either be hungry or just planning to eat junk when I had time to myself. I've never understood people who said they were too busy to remember to eat, but now I can see how it happens!

Crouton19 · 10/05/2024 21:04

First injection done! I watched 4 or 5 different youtube videos and none of them said the thing would spin round when pressed, so I thought I had done it wrong. Totally painless and I've just had a stirfry dinner so it will be interesting to see how I do tomorrow.

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/05/2024 09:31

Wow I still can't believe how well I am doing.
Start weight 18.4
Today 17.1 (3lb this week)
Started 5mg on Wednesday and have felt OK.

This just feels unreal after losing and gaining the same 4lb for the last 10 + years. I can't wait to see 16 on the scales.

I really want to be mindful this week of adding more protein. Maybe a bean heavy chilli or something.

BusyBlue · 11/05/2024 09:42

First week done, weighed this morning and I’ve lost 11lbs!

So happy with that, although I realise it won’t continue. I followed advice on eating a high protein low carb diet, but didn’t massively increase my water. No real side effects so far, except a bit of a headache but that could be coincidence. It did feel like it was wearing off a bit yesterday as I was tempted to snack on some crisps, but managed to hold off.

On to week 2.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 11/05/2024 10:18

I did a cheeky extra weigh-in this morning and have lost another 2lb, bringing my total loss since my first jab on 16 April to 16lb. A new stone bracket is 3lb away. This is genuinely life-changing.

WoolyMammoth55 · 11/05/2024 11:48

I had my first coaching call with Voy yesterday - very rushed and scripted from the nice coach lady!! 😂

But I found myself saying (which is totally true btw):

I've always been aware that I embarrass myself eating in public - because I am so uncontrollable and compulsive with food that I sometimes eat with my mouth open, and more times than I can count I've had mad coughing/choking fits in restaurants because I'm literally inhaling my food. And even though I knew about this and wanted to change it, it wasn't something I could control with my mind or will power - the cravings felt physical and wild and out of my control.

But on MJ, on day 3, I noticed myself putting my cutlery down between mouthfuls. It was an intense PHYSICAL change, not a mental/ willpower thing. The wild cravings in my body were gone and instead was a physical sense of 'I'm going to see how this mouthful goes down before I have the next one'. It feels Zen-like.

It's a MASSIVE change, and was almost instant in week 1 on this medicine. That for me is what's life-changing! I honestly can't wait to see what life is like longer term without all the physical and emotional cravings that I've lived with my whole adult life. Bring it on!

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 11/05/2024 12:50

That is amazing, @WoolyMammoth55! The sort of fundamental change I dream of!

I'm going to have to get a private scan to check gallbladder/pancreas/liver now so my pen stays waiting in the fridge.

Thanks, @Menora 🤞

This is nuts / huge progress

i started 10 weeks ago and have lost about 12lbs....which is pretty unremarkable but i suppose consistent.

Crouton19 · 11/05/2024 15:57

It is so motivating to hear about all losses, big and not so big. I've had cravings today which was unexpected but it is only day 1 so I won't think on it too much, but it made me realise how much I eat out of habit and wanting something rather than hunger. I have drunk more water and seem to have put today's desire to graze on crisps behind me.

catgirl1976 · 11/05/2024 16:07

Just off on a bike ride which is the first exercise I’ve done in years and aside from that im not sure how much fuel I’ve got in my tank with hardly eating but I’ll give it a go…

thebigmove21 · 11/05/2024 17:52

i have just done my weekly injection and somehow when I took the pen out of my thigh the needle broke. I didn’t feel anything but heard it snap and the injection site bleed for a bit. I pressed it with a cotton wool bud and didn’t rub but now I am worrying that something had gone wrong as I have never had any trouble before. Has anyone had a needle break before?

No I haven't but the needles is very fine so I can see how it can happen. Message your supplier it may be a faulty batch.

Hi, it is possible to break insulin needles. The best way to check is to measure the needle you took out, should be 8mm long.
