Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

Morning all! Just did a day 10 weigh in and I've lost 7lb altogether! I can't believe it!!!!

I inject on a Thursday and lose my appetite until the Monday, can generally only get about 600 calories in on Friday Saturday and Sunday, then seems my appetite gradually comes back until it's normal on the Thursday and I inject again. Is this normal?

TimeIretired · 12/05/2024 13:04

@GreatGateauxsby I took my 9th dose yesterday and have lost 16lb so far so mine is slow too. That said the 9 weeks include 2 weeks holiday.

thebigmove21 · 12/05/2024 13:54

Thank you for the message regarding me stupidly breaking the needle. I think it did go in as I am feeling utterly exhausted and poorly today, have had a cold for a week and although I am less snotty and gross now. The feelings of exhaustion are lingering. I am in the 4th dose of 5mg. What are others experiences of moving up to 7.5mg? Am feeling a bit nervous of doing so after this week.

Yes this seems to happen to me although before this drug I ate so much I forgot what hunger was.
I am glad I choose a day to jab that takes me over the weekend when
I am home more.

I hope you don't mind a newbie joining your thread. I specifically joined mumsnet today (my youngest child is 10 haha!) because I found this thread when googling and I thought yes, this is my tribe!

I can relate to everything everyone is saying. I too am morbidly obese and I just can't relate to people who say they're fat when they're a size 12 or whatever. I'm massive, struggling with injuries to my feet and legs which whilst maybe not directly caused by my weight are not healing well and I'm sure my weight is not helping.

I've got to the point where I just want to hide away. I don't want to go anywhere and see people. I just want to stay at home where I'm safe and no one can give me funny looks for being so big. I broke down and cried and cried on Friday night. I'm just existing, not living. I've been vaguely aware of the new weight loss medications as I've had some emails about them, but I read and read about them this weekend and I've gone ahead and ordered Mounjaro from MedExpress. Getting a full length photo was tricky and I actually don't look that enormous front facing, I look massive side facing, stomach sticks out miles further than my boobs and I have the saggy post c section pouch hanging at the bottom, ugh, awful, so why they don't ask for front and side photos I don't know. They rejected my first photo and so I had to get a friend to take another (husband has taken the kids to see family - I just couldn't face going as I was so despondent and upset). They seem to have accepted it as the status of my order is now awaiting dispatch so fingers crossed it arrives on Tuesday.

I'm female, mid 40s, 2 kids, starting weight of 125kg and BMI of 44. Please let this journey be one of finding myself and losing the food noise and the mindless eating, eating is my hobby, but it's killing me so things must change.

WoolyMammoth55 · 12/05/2024 15:29

Hi @SelectStar welcome! You and me are super similar - I'm turning 44 in a couple of weeks, with a 7 and 3.5 year old and SW of 130kg, BMI 46...

This medicine has been MAGIC for me (I'm only on day 10!) - I feel so different IN MY BODY about food now, it's wild...

I'm expecting a 12-18 month treatment period, I have an underactive thyroid and lose slooooow... But unlike 'willpower' diets I KNOW I can sustain this for long-term - I can't wait to see how my life will be transformed a year from now...

Wish you all the best, right here with you for the long haul 😄

KeepingUndercover · 12/05/2024 15:35

@SelectStar welcome. I started in a similar place to you, 120kg and BMI of 43/44. I'm now down to 109kg. It's been tough at times, I've had a lot of nausea on the 5mg dose but that seems to have levelled off now. I feel so much better in myself already. Hopefully you'll find that even a small amount of weight loss starts improving how you feel.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 12/05/2024 16:06

Welcome @SelectStar and good luck! Many of us are finding this medication life-changing and I hope you will too.

If you think you have part of a needle inside you and you feel unwell you need to see your GP who will likely order an xray.

Thank you @WoolyMammoth55 Yes we sound very similar, I'm 44 and I thought I'd had my kids quite late but seems you held out for even longer than I did - you're brave! Mine are 10 and 12 so relatively independent compared to small ones! I commit to keeping up with this thread and sticking it out for the long haul and we can support each other. Can't wait for the medicine to arrive now, I'm so impatient.

Thank for the welcome and kind words @KeepingUndercover and @VelociraptorsVelociRapping I'm glad to be here.

RMNofTikTok · 12/05/2024 16:17

Thanks @Sunshineandrainbow that's rather reassuring. My mouth also tastes like sulphur the whole time 🤪

Crouton19 · 12/05/2024 17:35

Wow I've had no appetite today, had to force a yogurt to make sure I didn't unexpectedly keel over and just had a bowl of cereal. But I have been so productive! Had a massive spring clean. DH kept offering me a slice of his fresh bread, posh crisps and a choc ice from the freezer and every time I just wasn't interested. I've done diets before where I have lost appetite but usually after days and days of not eating carbs to get into a state of ketosis. It is a game-changer not having to go through that stage.

SakuraTrees · 12/05/2024 17:43

Does anyone else have odd tasting taste buds? I've just had one of my favorite dishes. Pasta bake with ham, cheese and jalapeños which I haven't had since starting and it tasted awful. I gave it to the kids as they wanted extra.

I'm at the end of week 13 and 3 months in. During that time I've lost 3.5 stone but I had a lot to lose. I've got 5.5 left to get to goal and take me to a BMI of 24.

Sorry I was typing quickly, I meant I think the dose went in (not the needle!) hence feeling tired!

GreenGooner · 13/05/2024 10:55

Morning all. I've been reading with interest so hoping to join if that's ok?

I've just done my 1st .25 jab. It was much easier than I'd built it up in my head Grin

I also have a lot to lose. Weighed in this morning at a whopping 17st 4.3lb Blush the heaviest I've ever been. Considering I'm only 5ft1 it does not sit well on me, so looking to lose about 6 stone.

Will see how I get on.

No side effects yet but it's only been about 15 minutes so time will tell.

Welcome to the large club, I'm 5ft 2 and currently 18st 11, you certainly are not alone! Let's make this year the year we both shrink 😁

Fat clinic update (ps if that term offends others I will stop using it!

Had my phone call with dietician this morning. Clinic will have nhs wegovy in the next 8 weeks, they will take over my prescribing.

Dietician has offered me some 1:1 sessions with her to rehash my diet because I have particular needs,

They don't see a need for me to attend mood and food groups but I can if I wish.

I have an appointment with the endocrinologist and psychologist this afternoon at 13:00.

To find your local fat clinic Google "(city name) tier 3 weight management services CCG policy" as if you are very large like me you may be eligible for nhs care (but I've waited 3 years for an appointment!)

KeepingUndercover · 13/05/2024 11:07

That's fantastic you're going to get Wegovy on the NHS @RMNofTikTok. Such a long wait to be seen though!

Weigh day for me today and I am 1.5kg down. I was a bit worried my dip under a BMI of 40 wouldn't hold, but it has. And I'm now in the next stone bracket too.

Been for a swim this morning and I am about to do my next injection. New pen but sticking to 5mg for now.

RMNofTikTok · 13/05/2024 11:09

@KeepingUndercover it was a very long wait! But worth it if they will give me proper support! I've also asked about supported/supervised exercise as I have POTS and I use a wheelchair.

GreenGooner · 13/05/2024 12:04

@RMNofTikTok yes let's! I'm feeling positive. Let's see how long it lasts.

KeepingUndercover · 13/05/2024 12:08

Hope they can deliver on the exercise too @RMNofTikTok

Swannage · 13/05/2024 12:17

Hope its ok if I join too? I'm 152kg and 8 weeks in. Im only 1kg down though which is very disheartening. I have noticed a very slight change in my shape but not so as others would notice. Im going to try my first pen of 1.0 and see if I lose anything with that, if not I think I'll have to save my money and try something else.

KeepingUndercover · 13/05/2024 12:23

Are you on Wegovy @Swannage. I think that works the same as Mounjaro (which I take) in that the initial doses are lower to get your body used to it and while some people will lose on that, not everybody does. So you have to be a bit patient and wait for the higher, therapeutic doses.

I hope you see more happening soon and welcome to the thread.

WoolyMammoth55 · 13/05/2024 13:22

@VanellopeVonSchweetz99 you mentioned about being a super-responder and sticking at a lowish dose through your whole weight-loss journey.

It's still really early days for me but I'm aware that I've had a strong response to the initial 2.5 dose of Mounjaro and am considering staying here for a while - Voy will send me a 5mg pen next but I can easily take half doses...

Just wonder given @Swannage's post if you have any wisdom to share about being a super-responder vs what's a 'normal', slower but equally valid response to the medicine?

Just because I've definitely seen on other threads people beating themselves up for slow and steady losses but I do think that's more what the medication is designed to do? Whereas I'm on the non-therapeutic lowest dose and feeling it really strongly! We are all different and it's going to affect us all differently...

Menora · 13/05/2024 13:35

I was a super responder I lost lots on .025 and 0.5mg but with that came relentless nausea. I don’t think anyone should be envious of not being a super responder as it came with a LOT of side effects. If you are able to live a pretty functional life and losing weight slowly you need to put it into perspective. Feeling constantly dreadful but losing weight isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
