Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

Hi, please can I join? I need to lose at least 4 stone. I am waiting for a knee replacement and I know my extra weight is adding to the pain.
ive received my first order of Mounjaro and I’m going to do my first injection tomorrow. I’m not telling my DP I’m starting and I do feel a bit like I’m cheating! Does the pen always need to be kept in the fridge?

Tesco, Waitrose, I think most supermarkets do them now. They were on offer at Tesco last time I looked, the Goodrays ones with 30mg CBD 4 for £6.

I ordered a case of Trip ones from their website with a good first order discount, though they don't have as much CBD. Their 'calm down' one has 25mg CBD though it does have apple cider vinegar in so doesn't taste quite as nice as the other flavours. I think they do a mixed case you can try them all.

CBD drinks are great! I love the peach and ginger Trip one - lovely mild mellow.

Not always, I kept my first one in my bedroom drawer as I was going to use it within the 30 days it can be stored at room temperature once opened.

Mine arrives tomorrow and I haven’t told dh yet either. Not quite sure why, he won’t be bothered about the money, but will probably joke about it a bit. That is probably why, I don’t tell him because I am a bit nervous about it and don’t want to admit that.

I’ve ordered two pens so one will need to go in the fridge! Will maybe hide it in something he won’t touch, just need to work out what!

KeepingUndercover · 17/06/2024 20:23

If you're hiding in the fridge just don't stick it right at the back in case it freezes.

I'm starting on Wednesday. Need to find out if best morning or night, and which part of the body!

If mine arrives tomorrow I am thinking I’ll start Thursday, I WFH on a Friday, so if I have any side effects now or as the dose increases they should settle down by Monday I hope. I’m going for my stomach as I been prodding it and my thighs with my fingernail and think it will be the least sore! I don’t like the idea of arms.

Good luck tomorrow and let me know if you have any tips after doing it!

ClonedSquare · 18/06/2024 09:49

I took my third 5mg dose on Sunday night and ordered my next pen at the same time. I decided to stick with 5mg for another month, and did waver over whether it was the right choice.

Then the drug kicked in yesterday and I definitely did make the right choice. I'm still not getting any bad side effects but the appetite suppression/length of time I feel full on 5mg is insane in the first few days. I had two chicken thighs, some grapes and a bottle of water for lunch yesterday, and was still too full to eat more than a few chips at dinner time six hours later.

Which is obviously going to cause weight loss, but it's messing with my head a bit. I've never needed to actively plan my meals to ensure I'm eating enough good stuff before! Usually I have room for all the good stuff and a ton of junk on top.

oreo2024 · 18/06/2024 10:25

@ClonedSquare I do wonder how it feels, eat little and not feel hungry for hours.
But why didn't you want to order 7.5 and split into smaller doses so it lasts longer?
Mid-week weigh-in here - the scale has finally moved. I am now at 102.5kg and and 5.8kg down since I started MJ 4.5 weeks ago. The non-linear loss and the permanent hunger is annoying, but I will take it as it is the best results I have had in years. That double digit milestone is just around the corner, and I have not been under 100kg since 2020.

ClonedSquare · 18/06/2024 11:28

@oreo2024 I just don't believe in messing around with medication, so I'm taking it as directed. Other people are willing to do differently and that's fine for them, but not for me.

MrsClownland · 18/06/2024 13:38

I haven't even started yet, but when I will be due my second pen will be straight after I return from 10 days holiday. Do you think they will let me order another pen early so I have it ready for coming back? Otherwise I'd have to delay my start and order for it to arrive as soon as I get home

QueenOfHiraeth · 18/06/2024 13:46

I agree with this. When a medication is licensed it is approved for use as tested and directed so safest not to vary it unless really needed. I'm also debating whether to go up to 7.5 or remain on 5mg.

@oreo2024 The drawback of buying a stronger pen and using smaller doses is that the pen should be discarded 30 days after the first use so stability cannot be guaranteed after that point. Also splitting doses means puncturing the seal more frequently which carries a greater risk of compromising the sterility and chance of infection.
It always remains the individual's choice but, as someone who worked with medication for many years, I think sticking as close to "as recommended" as possible is the best way

mjnewbie · 18/06/2024 17:10

Hi all, just tagging in - I have just had my first injection, I started at 110.2 kg, and over the last month have reduced my calories and upped my exercise slightly and dropped to 106.1.

Hoping these will give me the boost I need to keep going long term, having dieted in the past and lost lots of weight only to balloon back up to my starting weight. I don’t know if I’ll continue with them long term yet, but I’m willing to give it a go and see if it helps. I know I can do it the traditional way but I’ve always found it very difficult to keep going past the month mark of a calorie deficit. I don’t have a goal but as for now would love to see under 100kgs on the scales over the next 2 months!

Following all of your journeys with hope for us all!

oreo2024 · 18/06/2024 18:11

@mjnewbie welcome!

@QueenOfHiraeth they said somewhere on another thread that American version of MJ is valid for 6 weeks rather than 30 days ... I am going by that for financial reasons.

These threads are so inspiring and supportive, especially after that horrible and ignorant thread claiming we are stealing insulin from diabetics Hmm

It is dose 4 for me tomorrow so I have just ordered my next pen in case I can't get the bonus dose out, so have a 15% Zava code if anyone wants it:

Who did you order from? I know with medExpress they allow you to order after around 2 weeks so if your prescriber is the same you should be fine to get it before you go on hols.

I just ordered my next pen today. Complained to MedEx about the lack of discount codes and they gave me £5 account credit. Better than nothing so I stuck with them and will probably investigate switching to someone else for my next pen. Also stuck with 5mg because I’ve still not been able to get above 3 without being utterly ill. So I’ll keep trying to titrate up slowly

MrsClownland · 18/06/2024 19:30

Thank you, @Ghilliedu I used Chemists4u. I assume it would be fine to leave the pen in the fridge for the time I'm on holiday?
Going to take my first dose soon I've been putting it off as I've already got a dodgy tummy today!

@mjnewbie welcome!

Just check if the pen is the same in the US. I think I read somewhere that the reason it is more expensive there is that a 4 dose pack is 4 single use pens rather than a 4-dose unit. They will have a longer date as there is no risk of contamination.
There is also another system in the US called "compounding" where manufacturing pharmacies make your meds to order which is cheaper. They produce multi-use vials for use with syringes which may have a longer date.
Obviously you can make your own decision on this but social media posts may or may not be the full picture

QueenOfHiraeth · 18/06/2024 20:13

@MrsClownland I had that same problem. The provider I use does a monthly subscription thing which would have happened while I was away so I just contacted them and they moved the date forward by 10 days so my next supply arrived before and was safely tucked away in my salad crisper drawer for when I came back.

Today's NSV: I need to take a link out of my watch! I didn't think my wrists were especially fat...

I followed a low carb diet 10 odd years ago (two journalists), and it always stuck with me that they said - yes you can have fat feet, and their shoe sizes dropped.

in addition to body size creeping up, I went up a shoe size. Fat feet or excess weight giving me flatter feet same difference. Will be interesting to see if I drop a shoe size when (if, not jinxing myself ) I get to target weight.

Was it India Knight and Neris Thomas? I had that book (and was briefly on the charmingly named 'pig to twig' support forum!).

Yes, my shoes have been feeling a bit looser. I went up a half size with each of my pregnancies, I thought permanently, but perhaps not!

Can I join this? Ordered my first pen and I'm waiting for it to be delivered today.

I'm 45 currently 16st (100kg) and would like to lose about 4 stone, my BMI is 45.

I never share my weight but feel like writing it in here is going to give me the kick I need.

Very worried about side effects as I have anxiety as well but mostly I just really want it to work because I don't know where I'll go from here if it doesn't.

How's it going @frecklejuice ? I am same age and weight as you, and about to move over to Wegovy from Saxenda... slightly nervous!

justweg · 18/06/2024 23:31

Hello all, am about to start Wegovy. What is this extra dose that I am reading about?

Shall pick up prescription tomorrow... am nervous!
